What hurt me most about the episode was how Dedra accepted the violence against her without a problem. How she doesn't even say anything to Syril when he grabs her or puts his hands on her neck. She can only say that he's hurting her once before removing the situation and speaking to Syril again with the same affection as always.

holy shit when Denise implied Dedra’s inability to love or be loved or be vulnerable would lead to her downfall, she wasn’t fucking around.

S2E8 answers a major question (SPOILERS)
Why send Syril to Ghorman? I'd been trying to figure it out - I mean, sure, his profile/history with the ISB would look attractive to the fledgling Ghorman resistance, but if Luthen and the rebels can manufacture a persona, how difficult would it be for the ISB to do the same? After all, Syril is nowhere near qualified for an undercover op, the ISB has to have at least thousands of agents better suited for it. And how does his involvement benefit Dedra, exactly? Not professionally, for the aforementioned reasons, and if their relationship is genuine (as we see now that it was), how does sending him there make sense?
It doesn't. Because it was never her idea. It was Partagaz's. And it has less to do with the op - more with Dedra's motivation. Dedra wasn't into the whole Ghorman Project thing, remember? Forcing her into it still wouldn't have guaranteed that she'd go above and beyond... And the Empire needed her at 200%. So Partagaz made it personal for her. He chose Syril specifically to keep her motivated at all times, eager to carry out the mission to perfection and knowing that the ISB could easily blow Syril's cover with the resistance at any time if he (Partagaz) feels that she's underperforming.
Syril was a hostage for almost 2 years and he never knew it. Dedra must have known, on some level, but couldn't and wouldn't go against her superior(s)... Just kept convincing herself it was all for the greater good.

something I think Dedra forgot (and which tbf I forgot right up until his hands were around her neck) is that Syril, for all that he's generally a quiet, milquetoast submissive person who carries out orders well and generally believes those orders to be well-founded, was a cop, and never really stopped being one
this is the man who stalked her to her place of employment on multiple occasions, don't forget.
He was instructed, molded, expected, and taught how to use a very close-up violence in pursuit of his goals. His entire last three-four years of life have been dedicated to finding Andor, in one way or another. He was taught that the only way to respond to something that was not 'right' to his worldview was violence. And as soon as something didn't go his way to his satisfaction, as soon as he learned he'd been lied to, he returned to violence.
To his eyes, it was probably the same thing that happened to him with the corpo security gig. He was doing what he was told to do, by a person/institution he trusted, and then found out that no, the one he trusted doesn't actually give a damn, or at least enough of one, to tell him the truth, and he's punished for trying to find out the truth.
And then the second he finds Andor he goes right back to being a cop. Shoot first, ask questions later.
You can take the pig out of the sty...
And also: he didn't straight up choke Dedra into unconsciousness or straight to death. he was still in compos mentis when he was doing that, he had enough control to be able to keep her alive so she could be useful.
I have to wonder how much of his anger was actually there? And how much, if any, was performative to get Dedra to talk? just thinking about that post about abusive partner rage where it's never their stuff that gets broken, never anything of value to them that gets damaged, only their partner and their partner's things.
I do think he was angry but I also think he's a man who's had his entire raison d'etre for the last couple years shattered by a woman he thought loved him (and I don't doubt that she did), and lacking any other means of obtaining the information he wanted, decided to take it out on her.

CRYING. FIC IS SO GOOD.
A Very Narrow Path
Chapters: 1/1 Word Count: 5,645 Rating: M (18+, MDNI) Relationships: Syril Karn/Dedra Meero Characters: Syril Karn, Dedra Meero, Eedy Karn Additional Tags: Character Death, Grief/Mourning, Hurt No Comfort, Canon Compliant, Missing Scene, dedra meero has no experience with love or grief, and she certainly has no experience grieving someone she loves
There’s nothing in her stomach to come up when she retches. Her body heaves for the sake of heaving. It all seems wrong. If she opens the door, she should see him standing proudly in his coat and his beret, with a scarf wrapped around his neck. She should be able to look into his eyes, smile, and tell him they’ve won. That they’re the Imperial heroes they’ve always dreamt of being, and now, having claimed their victory, they can go home and be together for the rest of their lives. They can put this Ghorman mess — and all the smaller messes it encompassed — behind them.
I didn’t want this.

Syril dies. Dedra mourns.

"I thought I had ruined my life. I thought I was done. After meeting you, and discovering you understood how dangerous Cassian Andor was. Just being in your presence, I... I've realised that life is worth living. I realised that if nothing else, there was justice and beauty in the galaxy and if I just kept going...Perhaps my deranged belief that there was something better fated for me in the future was a dream worth clinging to."

Dedra realizing she is not exempt from hands-on male rage and violence, including intimate partner violence (even from someone like Syril who we know to be quite passive with her), just because she vastly outranks him socially and politically and usually wears the pants in the relationship???? her face when he put his hands around her throat and yells at her?? even with all that education and climbing the ranks and scheming and military rank, it still doesn't fucking matter in that moment, not in the slightest. she is completely at his mercy and you can see it in her eyes when she realizes her miscalculation and oversight in this situation. incredible.
