Showing some love to the legendary milliner, Mae Reeves (1912-2016) today. Based in Philadelphia, entertainers, churchgoers, and socialites from all over the country got their hats from the late Reeves.
When she opened her shop (ca. 1940-42), she became one of the first Black women to own a business in Downtown Philadelphia. Her business was in operation until her retirement in 1997.
Ms. Reeves' and her children donated countless photos, hats, and other memorabilia to the Smithsonian in the latter years of her life. It is all part of an exhibit at the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
