Women being sexualized when having a big chest
Recently, I came across a TikTok of a female getting a lot of hate for wearing an outfit to the Kentucky Derby. Her dress was a low-cut dress, and she has a big chest, so individuals are giving her a lot of hate and sexualizing her. Individuals in the comments are saying, 'she's an attention seeker' and sl*t shaming her.
This correlates to this class because the comments are sexualizing her, which reinforces the idea that a woman's primary value is her appearance, treating her like an object rather than a human. I added this because it happens a lot with females, especially when you have a bigger chest and try to wear shirts or outfits that are trending.

Pinkalicious
This is a children's book that I grew up with, but I recently read it to my PreK class. When reading it, it made me realize that kids could start interpreting color with gender because of this book. This book follows a young girl who loves pink, glitter, and princesses. After reading this book, children will associate those items with gender.

Helping Hands
I am a lead pre-K teacher at a daycare where we do calendar every day during the calendar we do classroom jobs in which a child gets the opportunity to choose a job. There is cleanup, crew supply, helper, teachers, helper, calendar, helper, and a light helper.
This is relevant to this course because I am challenging the traditional gender roles by teaching kids that anyone can be any job helper. Typically you would have girls be the clean up crew and have the boys be a supply helper because of strength.
Another way I challenge the gender roles is when we have a sam’s pick up order, every child helps bring in the groceries and supplies, versus only picking the strong children.

Kamala Or Trump 2024 Election
During the election, I saw numerous TikTok videos talking about Kamala not being fit as president in case we go to war. Individuals were worried that we would be more targeted because Kamala is a girl and doesn't have powerful leadership skills. Individuals thought Trump would be more fit as president because he's a man, and other countries wouldn't declare war as easily.
This relates to this class because of many things, one being power dynamics. Individuals are saying Trump is more fit for president because he is a male, where as Kamala is a female and would get taken advantage of. They want a strong leader over a weak leader and are tying that to gender.

Adolescene
This TV show is about a young boy facing a murder charge for a young girl. At one point during the show, Adam (the young boy facing the charge) believes he deserves credit because he did not take advantage of the girl, and any other guy would have taken advantage of her.
This relates to this course because it shows how toxic masculinity encourages young men to have power over women. In the show, Adam kept saying " I could have, but didn't," which shows Adam thinks he has power and control over the young girl.

"The Life List"
This is a movie that I recently watched on Netflix, and something that the male and female actors said caught my attention. Alex and Brad are the main characters in this film. They were attending a fancy event, and Brad looked at Alex and said, "Shouldn't you be wearing a dress".
This correlates to this class because wearing a dress is what's expected from females, especially at fancy events. The gender norm is for males to wear a tux or suit and tie, while females wear dresses and high heels.

Female Pregnancy & Promotion
In a show called 'The Rookie', one of the female characters, Angela Lopez, was scared to tell her boss she was pregnant because of her recent promotion to detective. She was worried she would seem unfit or it would negatively affect her career.
This correlates to this class because of gender biases. Women are seen as less than when pregnant, especially in a male-dominated field like law enforcement.

Power Dynamics
A few weeks ago, some friends and I went out for a girls' night. This night abruptly came to an end because a man thought he was entitled to touch one of my friends.
This correlates to this class because of power dynamics. The man thought he was entitled to touch her because he's a man and she's a female, which goes with the traditional gender roles. Men are dominant and pursue what they want, whereas women are supposed to stay quiet about the situation and allow the behavior.

"You're Smart For A Girl"
Recently, I was at a family event, and my parents were talking to a family friend about my scholarship and talking about my grades. I had a hard time in high school, and hated school, but ever since coming to UNO, I love it, and my grades have shown that, so my parents were saying how proud they are of me and how far I have come since high school. The individual proceeded to say, "Wow! You're smart for a girl".
This correlates to this class because it reinforces the stereotype by implying girls are not smart or intelligent, and it's unexpected for a girl to be a straight A student.

AI & Gender
During this semester, one of my professors would use ChatGPT to write role plays. I just started to learn about AI told me all the things it could do, which is how this conversation got started. She expressed that she quit using AI for role plays because of the gender bias. Chat GPT would give traditional feminine roles to the female character and traditional masculine roles to the male.

'They Call Us Monsters' Documentary
This film shows the stories of three juveniles facing life in prison. Throughout the film, there were numerous scenes of the kids showing traits of toxic masculinity. One example from the film is Arad not expressing his feelings. He refuses to be vulnerable and open up, which is a sign of toxic masculinity, suppressing his emotions.

A Female with a Disability
Recently, I went to a gala and got all dressed up, but because of my disability, I could not wear heels. This is frustrating, as wearing high heels is associated with the traditional feminine roles. This goes along with dress codes in clubs and bars. There are some clubs in Las Vegas or Miami, where in order for a girl to be allowed in the bar/club, they must be wearing heels.

"Trump signs a bill officially banning men from participating in women's sports"
In a previous post, I mentioned I have come across many TikTok's of Trump since being in office. Many of these TikTok's have been about trans people, but specifically trans women. In this particular TikTok, he banned men from playing in women's sports, targeting trans women. In the video, several girls are cheering Trump on while he signs the bill. I noticed a few of the girls appear to be super young and it makes me think their parents have taught them or influenced them to believe in the traditional binaries, which goes back to the psychological theories of gender.

"Pink Pony Club"
This is a song by Chappell Roan, which is about the LGBTQ+ community and a safe place for people to be authentic and finding yourself. Chappell Roan sings
"And I heard that there's a special place
Where boys and girls can all be queens every single day"
This song relates to this course because it challenges gender normativity. This song represents a safe place and a place of acceptance for the LGBTQ+ community. The "club" means a place where gender is not limited to males or females, and individuals can identify freely with no judgment.

Personal Story at my work
I work at a daycare as a a lead PreK teacher. One morning a group of children were playing dress up and a child came up to me and said "boys aren't supposed to wear dresses". I proceeded to ask the child why and he responded with "well my mom told me that".
This story is related to this class because it falls under the psychological theories of gender. Psychological theories of gender is that gender is formed by parents and is learned through social relations. This story fits into the psychological theories of gender because the child has been taught by his mom, that dresses are for girls and not boys.

All Gender Bathroom
I was at QLI, a rehabilitation center in Omaha, Nebraska and noticed their bathrooms did not state woman or male, and did not have a person symbolizing a gender. The symbol was a toilet and it said "All Gender".
This correlates to this class because it challenges the traditional binaries about women's and men's bathrooms. Having an all-gender bathroom, allows anyone no matter their gender identity to use the bathroom and have a private space.

TikTok Gas Tank
I came across a video on TikTok stating that getting gas is a boy's job because the gas pumps are blue and not pink. This relates to this class because these colors represent a traditional binary that pink is associated with females, and blue is associated with males. This video also goes along with the traditional male and female roles in a relationship because it's saying men are supposed to fill the gas tank and not women.
