Decorating for the soul
January can be a depressing dreary time. Even though we’re still bursting with those 2018 goals and resolution plans; taking down the Christmas tree and going back to work or school is seriously crushing. So with that being said, what we can do to cheer ourselves up over the coming month.
Well, it’s a brand new year and that can only mean one thing, NEW HOME DECORATIONS!! My toes curl up with joy when I think about new candles and bedding and Pinterest DIYs. For most, I included, January is a time of budgeting after the December splurge, but that doesn’t mean you can’t decorate your home on a budget. So say farewell to the Christmas tree and say Hello to January decor schemes!
You can swap around your furniture, giving new life and uses to the rooms in your house. You could hunt for beautiful cheap objects in charity shops, IKEA hacks and Dollar / Pound store finds along with DIY crafts can all be employed to cheaply decorate your home.
Tumblr media
When I was putting away my living room and porch tree decorations, I decided to have a look to see if any of it could be salvaged to be utilized in the new January Scheme.
Tumblr media
I decided to use the pinecone and twine tree ornaments. I made them last year by gathering some pinecones and tying simple twine around the top. They are plain enough to suit the sparseness of the January landscape and as they are a woodland element, they look great in my woodland cottage any time of year. I kept out a pretty robin decoration as Britain is fortunate to see dozens of robins in the garden this time of year. I also kept back some strings of quartz chips I was using instead of tinsel on the tree. They look like icicles hanging in a winter forest. As January can be cold and icy at times, I think these will suit the scheme. Finally, I saved a Scandinavian Reindeer hanging ornament. When I think of January, I think of cozying up and sheltering from the bitter cold. The Danish have Hygee to do just that. Since Hygee is all about happiness and coziness, it makes sense to add Nordic inspirations to your home this January.

This is my January Porch Display.
I bought 1 item to add to this display and that was the grey beer crate. it was from the pound shop and obviously only cost 1 pound! Proof that you can totally transform your home with decor displays each month for hardly any money at all.
To the left of the windowsill, sits a simple plain wicker wreath. I added a few pinecones with a hot glue gun just to give it some interest. In front are 3 simple black metal votive holders with a pinecone cut out motif. They are an old purchase from Ikea that I picked up very cheaply. In the center of the sill is another piece of Christmas decor I saved for my scheme. It's a wooden winter village scene that lights up. I will keep this on display until February when the landscape brightens up a bit. To the right of the sill sits a decorative twig display. I will explain how you can make your own below.
On the table, to complement the twigs and wreath; sits a large wicker teacup planter which I have filled with some of the Christmas lights I have kept out from the festive period. In the center of the table is a chalkboard that I purchased for £1.20 from Amazon. I have written a message welcoming in January accompanied by a few cute snowdrops, the first flowers of the new year. To the right is a beer crate I picked up for 1 pound. I placed two glass jars of differing shapes inside. One is filled with lights and other contains seed packets. One jar is decorated with some lace and burlap ribbon glued around the outside. The other has a brown kraft tag tied around the outside with some twine. I printed the tag with a cute bird ink stamp and printed the initials of me and my husband on it. In front of the chalkboard is a small basket containing the quartz chip strings and a jar wrapped in twine.

TO MAKE YOUR OWN TWIG DECORATING TREE.
1. I collected some branches from a really interesting twisted and winding tree in my front garden.
2. I used a silver hurricane candle holder as a vase to hold my branches. I tied twine around the twigs to hold the sticks in place in the position that I liked.
3. I added my pinecone tree ornaments, some hanging heart decorations I had about the house and my robin that I kept from my Christmas tree. I added organic flourishes like tying twine to an owl feather and threading twine through a wooden slice button.
You can paint your twigs any color you like, but I'm keeping mine natural as the trees in January are brown and bare.
Tumblr media
I also went to work in the living room and tried to fill the space left by the removal of the Christmas tree. I usually put my tree on this old pine trunk. I decided to fill the space by adding my oversized log carrier. Filled with logs it looks so cozy and near the stove making it easy to put the wood on the fire. Next to this is a stack of books decorated with another set of jars, embellished with burlap ribbon and hand stamped craft labels. A faux topiary rabbit and a selection of antique butterfly specimens add a further natural touch to the display.
After doing all of this today I can say that I am very pleased with my changeup so far. Day 2 into my happiness quest and I'm feeling good. The challenge for tomorrow is that it is my first day back to work after the holidays. Stay tuned to see what strategies I employ to stay on top of my positivity tomorrow.
Happiness to all.

Practising Gratitude For a Blessed Life
What am I grateful for?
So today is new years day and this year I’m going to make a serious effort to regularly practice gratitude.
Here is my list.
1. My cat Brambles, also known formally as Bram Stoker. He is my little baby and I'm so grateful that he is my familiar.
Tumblr media
2. Biscuit. Biscuit is my sister’s cat and from the same litter as Brambles. We picked them out together 5 years ago when they were tiny cute kittens for sale in a house in Chester. My sister is living in a place that is not cat suitable right now, so biscuit has been lodging with us for the last 7 months. She is adorable and Bram loves having his sister around.
Tumblr media
Biscuit is on the chair, Bram is sitting on the floor.
3. My ducks Borris and Max. We rescued these two little chaps from a friend who could no longer keep them. I wasn't sure at first if I wanted to take on any more animals but I'm so glad we did. They are very entertaining and even help out in the garden by eating slugs and other pests that try to ruin my herb garden.
Tumblr media
Borris left Max right. Playing in the snow this December just passed.
4. My Fire Salamander Dante.
Dante is super cool and very docile. I'm lucky to have such a unique pet.
Tumblr media
5. My Husband.
My husband Lorin. There are not enough words to express how much I love my husband and how thankful I am for him.

6. My wood burning stove!
I grew up in the countryside as did my husband and both had real open fires in our homes. When we first moved in together we lived in the city as it was convenient and affordable. I longed for a real crackling fire to cuddle up in front of each night. I missed the scent of burning wood on a cold winters morning and used to dream of making those cute pinecone firelighters on Pinterest. There were no properties in the city with real fires, it was depressing. After 4 years in the city, our careers progressed and we were ready to leave the city. My husband found a beautiful cottage in the woods that came with a wood burning stove. I am sooo thankful for my stove this winter. My husband cut these cute heart shaped logs for me. Aren't they adorable?

7. My woodland.
If you had to pick one place in the world to live where would you choose? For me, I always adored the forests and woodlands of Brittain. I know I’m a Brit so that seems bias of me, but there is magick in the woods of Brittain, you can just feel it. The winding trees and bluebell covered grounds, a real-life fairytale exists in the woods of this ancient island. I live in a woodland that connects a country forest park and a mountain national park. Tourists from all over the world come to visit both country parks, but the woods that connects both of these remains forgotten. We get to have a private piece of that woodland. I never thought in my life I would actually get my own woods and I am truly thankful that I have this.

8. My Cottage.
I live in a country house, which I decorate according to the seasons. I prayed for this house and now I live here. I am so thankful.

 9. The views where I live
Spectacular and Pinterest worthy. I am thankful to live in real nature and tranquility.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
10. My car.
It might not be flashy, but it helps me get up the mountain without climbing Everest to get to work every day and for that, I am truly thankful.
Tumblr media
11. My Family.
All of them. I love them all and wouldn't be anyone without them.
Tumblr media
12. My garden.
I always wanted some land to grow flowers and herbs, but living in the city meant no garden. Now I have several big gardens and this is a sample of the harvest of my first year's flower planting. I used these in some mason jars at my wedding as extra decorations dotted around.

Happy 2018!!
Above is Biscuit the cat rolling around on my bed this morning. Its a new year and I’m determined to make this 2018 the best yet. I began my morning as I intended, with a positive mindset and cuddling one of my cats. I spent the afternoon eating Sunday lunch at my parents' house with my mum, dad, husband, nana and a family friend. Dinner was delicious and rounded off with several poinsettia cocktails!
All in all, the new year has started in a good way. Tomorrow, the Christmas decor is coming down and I will be changing around some decor and displays in my home. I’m letting in the new year by changing things around to encourage new and positive energies into our home for the year. I’m pursuing methods to find happiness and prosperity in my life, so I'm hoping that changing my home around and having a spring clean will purify my soul as much as my house.

Mindfulness Challenge -  CREATE A 2017 SOUNDTRACK OF YOUR LIFE
CREATE A 2017 SOUNDTRACK OF YOUR LIFE.
Post 10 songs that remind you of good times in the year gone by.
Choosing songs that remind you of the good times rather than the bad will help you reflect on the past year with positivity; rather than reliving the less than good times.
Whenever you’re thinking too much about the bad times, listen to your soundtrack and only think of the good memories.
