When I was in high school, our uni entered a movie making project and I was the scriptwriter of our team. Our English teacher had connections with Miss Vanessa Valdez, the most famous romance screenwriter in the Philippines (sample works: the mistress, one more chance, and I love you so, i love you goodbye ...etc), and invited her to teach my team screenplay writing. Granted, her time was short and I forgot her pointers, but I will never forget that she made examples out of her 2012 movie, Suddenly It's Magic starring Erich Gonzales and Mario Maurer.

She explained that the storyline was severely altered while the movie was on production because Mario Maurer's team keep saying he's got tight schedule. All the symbolisms she planted had to be replaced, thus, losing the magic of the movie (like the ending raining scene with red umbrella, which was supposed to be a ballon, a symbol she planted about magic.) That was all she said. She never showed she was bitter about it, but of course, we chismised after she left.

The original storyline was indeed very good. We grew up in Filipino movies and I personally know the flavor of Vanessa Valdez' scriptwriting. She puts a lot of symbolisms in her movies, and in addition, I cried in all her movies. Sabi ni ate, the 2012 movie came out... Bland. Like it wasn't Vanessa's. I think she didn't like the alters herself, and with that, we concluded one thing, "If it wasn't Mario Maurer, the movie would have been better."

Those times kase, Mario Maurer was dubbed as the "Southeast Asia's best actor" mga ganun, like John Lloyd Cruz never existed. So he became very popular but I don't really know about his acting style to judge. Alam mo naman 'tong Pilipinas, gustong makiuso, they tried to hire Mario out of his busy schedule. I'm not holding this against the man himself, but I think his team didn't think the Philippines was worthy of his full attention. They kept saying his time was short, and Vanessa had to compromise her artistry for a guy who could have been someone local and very much free.

Vanessa Valdez only came for teaching us writing, but she unknowingly taught us 'casting'. Cast someone who is willing. Someone who will respect your art. Someone who will take the project seriously.

We hired the people who were enthusiastic and nice. We also listened to their expertise (cuz like, we hired a pro actor haha). The movies turned out well. The other team won best movie (with my story concept) and best cinematography, and my team won best-selling movie.
