Today I encountered an especially pathetic Italian greyhound. His owner told me that a gust of wind once blew him into a lake.

hi! i love your writing omg. do you have any poetry or novel recommendations?
hiiii so i hung onto this question for a bit because i wanted to really curate the list but i started majorly overthinking it so instead i'm going to go with my first thought, which is usually my best thought. i'll skip the usual suspects unless i think the recommendation bears reiterating. only three books have ever really made me cry, and they're all on this list. this is not an in depth assortment, more like a primer of sorts. a big START HERE ->
POETRY: dream work — mary oliver war of the foxes — richard siken grapefruit — yoko ono faithful and virtuous night — louise gluck bright dead things — ada limon
FICTION: lie with me — philippe besson giovanni's room — james baldwin til we have faces — cs lewis open, heaven — sean hewitt
PLAYS: angels in america — tony kushner cat on a hot tin roof — tennessee williams death of a salesman — arthur miller
OTHER THINGS I THINK EVERYONE SHOULD READ IF THEY WANT TO: walk two moons — sharon creech ("childrens" lit, but nevertheless a book that left a lasting impression on me, i still think about it often) the anne of green gables series (the first four/five books are like... perfect fiction) the epic of gilgamesh (pick any translation that's accessible to you, it does not matter, i have read stephen mitchell's and andrew george's) aesop's fables (& i am so serious about this) psalms (yeah like from the bible)
