Punctuating Dialogue

➸ “This is a sentence.”

➸ “This is a sentence with a dialogue tag at the end,” she said.

➸ “This,” he said, “is a sentence split by a dialogue tag.”

➸ “This is a sentence,” she said. “This is a new sentence. New sentences are capitalized.”

➸ “This is a sentence followed by an action.” He stood. “They are separate sentences because he did not speak by standing.”

➸ She said, “Use a comma to introduce dialogue. The quote is capitalized when the dialogue tag is at the beginning.”

➸ “Use a comma when a dialogue tag follows a quote,” he said.

“Unless there is a question mark?” she asked.

“Or an exclamation point!” he answered. “The dialogue tag still remains uncapitalized because it’s not truly the end of the sentence.”

➸ “Periods and commas should be inside closing quotations.”

➸ “Hey!” she shouted, “Sometimes exclamation points are inside quotations.”

However, if it’s not dialogue exclamation points can also be “outside”!

➸ “Does this apply to question marks too?” he asked.

If it’s not dialogue, can question marks be “outside”? (Yes, they can.)

➸ “This applies to dashes too. Inside quotations dashes typically express—“

“Interruption” — but there are situations dashes may be outside.

➸ “You’ll notice that exclamation marks, question marks, and dashes do not have a comma after them. Ellipses don’t have a comma after them either…” she said.

➸ “My teacher said, ‘Use single quotation marks when quoting within dialogue.’”

➸ “Use paragraph breaks to indicate a new speaker,” he said.

“The readers will know it’s someone else speaking.”

➸ “If it’s the same speaker but different paragraph, keep the closing quotation off.

“This shows it’s the same character continuing to speak.”

Peeta Mellark is the type of person to follow a grieving girl to her broken home and plant a garden. But people forget Katniss is also the type to sing a lullaby to a dying girl and lay her in a bed of flowers. Despite being subjected to the cruellest games, they’re two kids who continue to be kind and choose love. Not everyone could find light and love atop a graveyard in a meadow, and that is why Katniss and Peeta have always deserved each other.

"defenestrate" is one of my favorite words in the english language because it's just so damn specific. like there's only one situation you'll ever be able to use it in but you might as well be prepared just in case.

first of all, their hands being entwined 🥹 and second: this relationship is anything but sappy and superficial; these two get into some of the most intense emotional and philosophical discussions of the whole series

I also love that though Katniss starts out trying to play the cameras she immediately fumbles it; no wonder she’s conflicted when he asks her what was real at the end of the book: she doesn’t know! because she does genuinely care for him!

also do we think Katniss’s wound started bleeding again because her pulse went up???

UGH. this. Katniss has been the provider and protector for so long, but now she finally gets to rest. she identifies him with both her mother and father: comforter and protector. Peeta is not her damsel in distress as the pop culture takes would have you think: he is her knight.
