Background: I had to go down a steep muddy hill and go in the river to get the shot of rio vista. It was a little scary but fun and thrilling at the same time.
Honorable Mentions
Background: I had used pictures with drumsticks to imitate the amount of lines I saw. I also had originally thought we needed to add a physical object. I still think the shots came out cool though!

Color Walk Essay
My walk begins as soon as I leave the front door of my apartment. The first color I notice is brown. Brown doors, trimming, rails, stairs, and signs. I notice the tan color of the hallways/building afterwards even though there is more of that color than there is brown. I gravitate towards the brown as it is bolder than the tan color. It almost feels as if the brown is strong and sturdy. I notice the tan color last since it is a very soft and a quiet color.
As I leave the complex, I feel lifted by the bright blue skies and puffy white clouds. My eyes then cling to the green leaves on the trees that float above me. I then cross the dark gray roads and bright yet light gray sidewalks towards my destination. The bright blue sky is carrying me through this entire journey. I cannot let go of the blue sky. The feeling of the heat also plays a role in this feeling. The feeling which is happiness, calmness, and peacefulness.
I pass by a couple of buildings through Texas State’s campus. I see the tan buildings with a slight yellow/brown tones, yet the maroon/red rigid roofs grasp my attention more. I then make my way by the JCK building. The green and brown/gray trees grow larger around me as they multiply through this part of campus. Although, it still feels quiet and calming almost like a hug or a pat on the back from nature.
Big bright white lines are screaming at me as I cross the street towards Sewell Park. The calm green shade of the trees are not holding onto me anymore. My surroundings are more open and the dark gray roads with multicolored cars passing by overwhelming. This feeling last for another 5 minutes until I reach the start of the trail to Rio Vista.
The trail to Rio Vista begins. The maroon bridge above me makes time feel slow. The dark blue box cars contrast nicely with the bright baby blue skies. It gives me an exciting and eager feeling. There is a green sign on a litter boat that is in the water that reads “place trash here, ponga basura aqui.” The use of English and Spanish reminds me of home. As I continue my walk down the light gray sidewalk, the color green surrounds me through the trees, plants, grass, and even small hints within the flow of the river. The calm peaceful feeling slowly returns to me. I make my way under a small bridge as the light brown shade of mud is guiding me towards Rio Vista.
I made it to Rio Vista. Shades of blue with subtle hints of green from the river are flowing through my veins and bringing a feeling of nostalgia and happiness to me. There are pops of white from the waterfalls that feel hopeful. Lime green, royal blue, and purple neon lights from a nearby restaurant twinkle in my eyes. These colors make me feel like I am dancing even though I am still.  Brown/gray/dark copper rocks are the last thing to catch my eye even though it is what’s keeping me above water. The green from the trees are farther away from me, but they still give me protection. The blue sky now has hints of pink and orange within it that gives a bittersweet feeling causing to make my heart heavy.

Research Essay
Helen Frankenthaler
Painter and printmaker Helen Frankenthaler is highly recognized as an American artist within the twentieth century. Frankenthaler was born and raised in Manhattan, New York. As a child, her family took many trips where Frankenthaler discovered her appreciation for landscapes, the sky, and the sea. At the age of fifteen, she studied under Rufino Tamayo, a Mexican painter, at the Dalton School in New York. Shen then studied under Paul Feely, an exhibition arranger, at Bennington College in Vermont and graduated in 1949. Upon graduating, she studied briefly with Hans Hoffman and moved back to New York. In that same year, 1950, she met Clement Greenberg and many other artists who had an interest in abstract expressionism.
Frankenthaler was concerned with the forms and energies laten in nature as she transitioned to color field study. Color field painting was the use of solid color that was stained/spread across a canvas thus creating a flat picture plane. Artists used this type of painting mainly for large fields. The following year, Greenberg invited Morris Louis and Kenneth Noland to Frankenthaler's studio to see her painting “Mountains and Sea.”  She was twenty-four years old at the time, yet her artwork had quite the impact. Their love for her work led to their experimentation with Frankenthaler's soak-stain technique along with color field painting.
Frankenthaler's character directed the movement of the pigment which she had controlled by using her hand. Frankenthaler used thinned down paint to create her abstractive paintings. Rather than using thick opaque oil paint, she would add paint thinner to acrylics until the paint was similar to the consistency of watercolor. She would apply this onto blank canvases. The acrylic paint gave her more flexibility as it allowed her control when she poured the paint thinner. Frankenthaler also used a cotton cloth when painting. The cotton cloths were softer and far more absorbent than primed canvas. This developed a surface which would allow her colors, even the boldest, to sink in very nicely.
Frankenthaler composed with color rather than with lines in her artwork. Her technique caused bright color stains despite her use of paint thinner. Frankenthaler described color as if it were a living organism. In an interview with an art historian, she stated “I mixed funny shades of colors and used them, but I used them because they made the drawing in my picture move.” In the same interview, she explained how she also liked to use vivid colors and also found the swampy browns and dusty grays to be beautiful as well.
