Robots were first introduced to humans in the 1800s. This was during the Industrial Revolution. The earliest versions of robots were bulky. The early robots can only do one or two tasks. From then on, the rise of this technology advancement has come far. We cannot deny that our future will include working with this technology.

Industrial machines during the 1800s were early types of robots. These robots helped in making labor work easier. While social robots are designed to be much engaging and interactive. Industrial robots like the Unimate of 1954 did one task over and over. The Unimate was used in the car industry to assemble the products.

Social robots are now used to perform a wide range of tasks in a given time. This may include but not limited to utility, entertainment, and social and emotional functions. What Is Transactional AI?

Freedom Robotics Launches With $6.6M In Seed Funding To Build The ‘AWS Equivalent For Robotics’

Jibo, a social robot meant to compete with Amazon’s Alexa, was vocal amid its shut down. It told owners, “maybe someday when robots are way more advanced than today, and everyone has them in their homes, you can tell yours that I said hello.”

Before shutting down its robots, the Boston company raised around $72.7 million in funding, according to Crunchbase. Burning cash isn’t singular to this robot, however. Robotics startup Anki, which raised $200 million in funding over time, shut down in April. And as for Alexa competitor Aido, you probably haven’t heard of it, and that’s probably because it was kicked off Indiegogo and StartupEngine.

So it is clear that it is hard to be a robotics startup. And one was started to make it easier. Freedom Robotics launched out of stealth yesterday with $6.6 million in funding to help build the “AWS equivalent for robotics.” The San Francisco company offers a suite of tools and services so robotics companies can go to the market faster, as well as smarter.

The round was led by Initialized Capital. Other investors include Toyota AI Ventures, Liquid 2 Ventures, and Green Cow Venture Capital. Also, a slew of individuals participated in the round, including Andrew Miklas, Justin Kan, and Arianna Simpson.

According to CEO and co-founder Joshua Wilson, Freedom Robotics will help other startups succeed.

“This is like trying to create a new software startup and writing your own database from scratch as the first step, or starting an e-commerce brand and having to build your own shopping cart instead of using Shopify,” said Wilson. “We saw this countless times in other markets and companies taking this strategy this got burnt out just trying to get into the market. Then quickly were outpaced by competition. Then they ran out of money. It’s absolutely crazy.”

Him and his co-founders saw a status quo in robotics: “It takes months and sometimes years of work before a prototype can be in a customers hands.” Plus, he added, speed and execution seem to be the “determining factor for most companies that win.”

After interviewing over 50 robotics developers and founders, they decided to create infrastructure and tooling pieces to help other robotics companies succeed.

For example, if something goes wrong, non-technical team members can use Freedom Robotics code to get alerts about an issue. Similar to a black box on an airplane, the team can see a replay of what went wrong and then collaborate between operators, developers, and managers to get things fixed quickly.

From the technical side, Williams says operators can control a robot from afar. For example making a delivery robot get to safety. You can also use Freedom Robotics to see the health status of a fleet of thousands of robots, to help inform decisions around maintenance and service.

The company did declined to disclose information around customers, however it claims it is being used by robots across various industries including agriculture, restaurants, warehouse factories, and last mile delivery networks.

The thought is, Wilson tells me, that by lowering the barrier to entry there is “a more diverse pool of companies bringing robotics into the mainstream.” He would know how important that is. Before launching Freedom Robotics, he started a company that was meant to build robots. And even got “several term sheet offers.” Despite good traction, Wilson thought the fundamentals in robot creation might be the more pressing market.

So while Freedom Robotics might be a company too late to save Jibo, Anki, and Aido and the rest of the deceased, the thought here is that it could help future companies have an easier time not just kickstarting, but also staying alive.

Social Robots: Are Robotic Pets Any Worse Than The Real Ones?

Social companion Aido Robot are getting increasingly popular, more widely used and accepted. This might have happened anyway, but the pandemic accelerated the pace of their “deployment”. Not so surprising, many social workers have experienced that COVID restrictions took a huge toll on elderly people living alone.

The loneliness of the ageing population is a known phenomenon. A vast amount of research has found that a significant percentage of people above 65 are living alone, and many of them feel lonely and isolated. Also well proven is the fact that loneliness alone is a health risk. Elevated cortisol levels, the physical symptoms caused by the mental strain resulting in more inflammatory diseases, declined immune functions, elevated cardiovascular risks increase mortality as much as would smoking, the lack of exercise or severe obesity, Ingen Dynamics.

How to tackle this problem when all social interactions were more or less banned, or at least advised against? Many of the social workers tried to find an answer to this dilemma. Some of them came up with the idea of distributing some kind of robotic companion among their patients. In fact, there were quite a number of initiatives along these lines around the world these past years.

We have seen the NY programs giving out Joy for all robot pets to people living alone, Canada experimenting with robot-comrades since the 2016 introduction of Ludwig, and some elderly care facilities in Ireland introducing Stevie to their residents. And we could go on and on with the examples of social robots involved in elderly care.

How good is it to have a social robot for your mental health?

The first thing that most likely comes into your mind is that humans need humans to connect with. Trying to substitute personal relationships with a mechanic creature with some form of artificial intelligence must be not right.

Surprisingly though, research after research finds the same thing: a vast number of lonely people with furry robotic pets, or smiling bulky robotic chat partners consistently report an improvement in their well-being. They understand that the companion is a robot, but find their presence relaxing.

This raises some interesting questions.

But hey, they are just fake!

Not surprisingly there are several distinctly different lines of thought about the topic of how to relate to social robots. It ranges from flat-out refusal to optimistic acceptance.

The negative attitude is easy to understand. This is just not real. Robotic pets are not real pets, robotic chat partners are not chat partners, robotic companions are fake. And everyone trying to ease the hardships of lonely ageing people with robots is just trying to get out of society’s responsibility of taking good care of the generation of our grandparents.

If we look at the topic from this angle – many argue – it is painfully obvious how developed (and ageing) societies fail to maintain the necessary interaction among the generations, and how they let down old people living alone.

Are robot companions so much different from pet companions?

But there is another way to look at this, and this is very inspiringly discussed in Kate Darling’s book, the New Breed. Among other topics, the book suggests we could examine our relationship with robots in the light of our relationship with pets.

The argument is clear, and for me, convincing. It says that when we look at elderly people having animal companions (real ones this time), it is obvious that they are not humans, and cannot provide the same kind of connectedness a human relationship does. Despite this, it is also clear that having a beloved pet does good for elderly people. It improves the quality of their lives, and no one ever would think about suggesting to take them away on the basis that they are not the real thing.

We are not worried about pets replacing future human relationships, we see them as supplemental. We might anthropomorphize our pets to some extent, and we may also do the same to our robot companions, but we will never mistake them for a real human.

You could of course argue that real pets are real, and robotic pets are not real. That is true. But for a large number of seniors, having a real pet is not an option. They might have limited mobility, not allowing them to take a dog outside multiple times a day, or clean the cat’s litter box. But they do enjoy the furry, realistic-looking creature being around, reacting to their daily routine and offering them interactions.

We can look at it as very sad. Or we can look at social robots as many robot pet owners do: with joy for making days less lonely, less depressing.

Robots can assist some children therapies better than pets or humans

Another great example the book cites is that of children involved in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) therapy. Many affected kids have serious difficulty in maintaining human interactions, a facet of the problem therapies aim to remedy. 

A lot of these ASD therapies are repetitive, and involve constantly telling the kids what they do wrong. Scarz lab came up with the idea of using Ellie, a robot head, repeatedly making social mistakes. Instead of an adult telling the kids what they do wrong, the kids are to teach Ellie what she should do, offering a different way to master the skills they need to practise.

Ellie will make a number of social mistakes, like avoiding eye contact, interrupting the one speaking and so on. The kids are to correct the way Ellie behaves.

This obviously could not be done with animal therapy: no animal would be able to model these social situations. And maybe not so surprisingly, it also cannot be done involving humans. The researchers tried to do that, they invited friendly actors to make mistakes, and asked the kids to help them. But the same children who were happy to interact with Ellie refused to interact with a nice lady. They saw through the situation and were too deterred to interact with a real person.

As adding animals to a number of therapies provided benefits human therapists could not achieve, the same seems to be true for adding robots to some therapies: they can provide assistance neither humans nor pets can offer.

As more people come to Linux, those of us who help the Windows refugees make the switch will need to be very patient with them. The more someone knows about Windows, the more likely it is that they will break Linux. Handing them a Linux laptop and saying, “Here ya go…” is not enough if they are going to succeed. You’re going to have to hold their hand for a while and telling them to “RTFM” will just drive them back to Windows. Understanding why they struggle as much as they do will help you to help them avoid some of the common pitfalls.

I specialize in helping people get started with Linux. I’ve helped hundreds of people over the last few years and I can pretty much spot the ones who are going to do well and those who are going to be frustrated. If a client approaches me and they start the conversation with “I’ve been using Windows for 20 years…” I know it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

The pattern is always the same: I walk them through an install and all is well for about two weeks and then I get a frustrated message from them about how Linux is stupid and doesn’t work. I know without asking that they’ve broken something major or borked up the whole system. I usually can fix the problem and make a good lesson out of it for them. I have gone so far as to walk them through a second installation from scratch. If the system is totally hosed, that’s the best way to go. Give them a clean slate to work with and hope they learned something.

On the other hand, if a client tells me that they know nothing about computers but they need one to get things done like writing documents, spreadsheets, web surfing and email then they usually have zero issues. I get them setup and I don’t hear from them again. I usually contact then after a month or two and they invariably tell me everything is working perfectly. I got a call from a gentleman I hadn’t heard from in a year and a half recently. He said everything was working nicely but he wanted some advice about upgrading his Linux Mint from 17.3 to 18.1 and could I help him get it right. No problem. Wonderful to hear that all is well!

I put my Mom on Linux a couple of years ago and she has had no major issues, as well. I go over there every so often and check on the state of the system and it’s chugging along just fine. I upgrade the kernel and that’s about it. She hasn’t even changed the wallpaper since I installed it. It’s not like she doesn’t use the computer; she’s on it every day. Since I switched her to Linux, she has embarked on a big research project that involves crunching a lot of information and scanning in mountains of documents and photos. So, what gives here? Sit a total newbie down in front of a Linux computer and they just start using it but hand Linux to a 20 plus year Windows power user and they trash it and get frustrated. Why is that?

I’m not a psychologist but I can hazard a guess or two on the subject. First off, nobody becomes an expert overnight. No, it takes years of practice. Lots of reading and experimenting and poking around have to take place before you can call yourself any kind of guru. A lot of it becomes muscle memory after a while. Before shutting down its robots, the Boston company raised around $72.7 million in funding, according to Crunchbase. Burning cash isn’t singular to this robot, however. Robotics startup Anki, which raised $200 million in funding over time, shut down in April. And as for Alexa competitor Aido, you probably haven’t heard of it, and that’s probably because it was kicked off Indiegogo and StartupEngine.

So it is clear that it is hard to be a robotics startup. And one was started to make it easier. Freedom Robotics launched out of stealth yesterday with $6.6 million in funding to help build the “AWS equivalent for robotics.” The San Francisco company offers a suite of tools and services so robotics companies can go to the market faster, as well as smarter.

The round was led by Initialized Capital. Other investors include Toyota AI Ventures, Liquid 2 Ventures, and Green Cow Venture Capital. Also, a slew of individuals participated in the round, including Andrew Miklas, Justin Kan, and Arianna Simpson.

According to CEO and co-founder Joshua Wilson, Freedom Robotics will help other startups succeed.

“This is like trying to create a new software startup and writing your own database from scratch as the first step, or starting an e-commerce brand and having to build your own shopping cart instead of using Shopify,” said Wilson. “We saw this countless times in other markets and companies taking this strategy this got burnt out just trying to get into the market. Then quickly were outpaced by competition. Then they ran out of money. It’s absolutely crazy.”

Him and his co-founders saw a status quo in robotics: “It takes months and sometimes years of work before a prototype can be in a customers hands.” Plus, he added, speed and execution seem to be the “determining factor for most companies that win.”

After interviewing over 50 robotics developers and founders, they decided to create infrastructure and tooling pieces to help other robotics companies succeed.

For example, if something goes wrong, non-technical team members can use Freedom Robotics code to get alerts about an issue. Similar to a black box on an airplane, the team can see a replay of what went wrong and then collaborate between operators, developers, and managers to get things fixed quickly.

From the technical side, Williams says operators can control a robot from afar. For example making a delivery robot get to safety. You can also use Freedom Robotics to see the health status of a fleet of thousands of robots, to help inform decisions around maintenance and service.

The company did declined to disclose information around customers, however it claims it is being used by robots across various industries including agriculture, restaurants, warehouse factories, and last mile delivery networks.

The thought is, Wilson tells me, that by lowering the barrier to entry there is “a more diverse pool of companies bringing robotics into the mainstream.” He would know how important that is. Before launching Freedom Robotics, he started a company that was meant to build robots. And even got “several term sheet offers.” Despite good traction, Wilson thought the fundamentals in robot creation might be the more pressing market.

So while Freedom Robotics might be a company too late to save Jibo, Anki, and Aido and the rest of the deceased, the thought here is that it could help future companies have an easier time not just kickstarting, but also staying alive.
