But after watching Sua die, he wanted to play hero and try to save Mizi, Ivan and Till, not really caring so much for Luka, knowing he was the fan favorite.

Suffice to say, his plan isn't going as well as he hoped it would

Tsumiki [or just Tsu in this AU] [she/her]

Tsu was an odd one from the start. No one expected her to pass. And she herself didn't care if she did or not.

She freaked everyone in their district out, mostly because of her weird obsession with bugs, dissection and monster anatomy. The monster caretakers themselves would go out of their way to avoid her. There were even rumors going around that she had attacked some of them.

What's worse, Tsu's music was uncomfortable to listen to. Not that it was bad, her singing talent was wonderful but the songs themselves were grimey and disgusting. And the monsters hated it but they couldn't vote her out. They say it's like somehow her singing compelled them to keep her in the game. Or rather, maybe it forced them.

A boisterous and boastful young woman. Her voice was incredible and the monsters went mad over it, she was even rivalling the popularity of Luka.

Freedom Robotics Launches With $6.6M In Seed Funding To Build The ‘AWS Equivalent For Robotics’

Jibo, a social robot meant to compete with Amazon’s Alexa, was vocal amid its shut down. It told owners, “maybe someday when robots are way more advanced than today, and everyone has them in their homes, you can tell yours that I said hello.”

Before shutting down its robots, the Boston company raised around $72.7 million in funding, according to Crunchbase. Burning cash isn’t singular to this robot, however. Robotics startup Anki, which raised $200 million in funding over time, shut down in April. And as for Alexa competitor Aido, you probably haven’t heard of it, and that’s probably because it was kicked off Indiegogo and StartupEngine.

So it is clear that it is hard to be a robotics startup. And one was started to make it easier. Freedom Robotics launched out of stealth yesterday with $6.6 million in funding to help build the “AWS equivalent for robotics.” The San Francisco company offers a suite of tools and services so robotics companies can go to the market faster, as well as smarter.

The round was led by Initialized Capital. Other investors include Toyota AI Ventures, Liquid 2 Ventures, and Green Cow Venture Capital. Also, a slew of individuals participated in the round, including Andrew Miklas, Justin Kan, and Arianna Simpson.

According to CEO and co-founder Joshua Wilson, Freedom Robotics will help other startups succeed.

“This is like trying to create a new software startup and writing your own database from scratch as the first step, or starting an e-commerce brand and having to build your own shopping cart instead of using Shopify,” said Wilson. “We saw this countless times in other markets and companies taking this strategy this got burnt out just trying to get into the market. Then quickly were outpaced by competition. Then they ran out of money. It’s absolutely crazy.”

Him and his co-founders saw a status quo in robotics: “It takes months and sometimes years of work before a prototype can be in a customers hands.” Plus, he added, speed and execution seem to be the “determining factor for most companies that win.”

After interviewing over 50 robotics developers and founders, they decided to create infrastructure and tooling pieces to help other robotics companies succeed.

For example, if something goes wrong, non-technical team members can use Freedom Robotics code to get alerts about an issue. Similar to a black box on an airplane, the team can see a replay of what went wrong and then collaborate between operators, developers, and managers to get things fixed quickly.

From the technical side, Williams says operators can control a robot from afar. For example making a delivery robot get to safety. You can also use Freedom Robotics to see the health status of a fleet of thousands of robots, to help inform decisions around maintenance and service.

The company did declined to disclose information around customers, however it claims it is being used by robots across various industries including agriculture, restaurants, warehouse factories, and last mile delivery networks.

The thought is, Wilson tells me, that by lowering the barrier to entry there is “a more diverse pool of companies bringing robotics into the mainstream.” He would know how important that is. Before launching Freedom Robotics, he started a company that was meant to build robots. And even got “several term sheet offers.” Despite good traction, Wilson thought the fundamentals in robot creation might be the more pressing market.

So while Freedom Robotics might be a company too late to save Jibo, Anki, and Aido and the rest of the deceased, the thought here is that it could help future companies have an easier time not just kickstarting, but also staying alive.

Humanoid robots: Are they soon coming to your home?

Readers and experts weigh in on when we can expect to see humanoid robots in every home. Predictions range from 12 years to never, but all are agreed that we can expect robots to make life easier — at least for those who can afford them.

Dreaming of droids

Humans have long been fascinated with the idea of robots made in our own image. Isaac Asimov imagined a futuristic world in which humanoid robots were commonplace and, famously, programmed with the Three Laws of Robotics to help — and not harm — their human counterparts. The Jetsons had Rosie. The Skywalkers had C-3PO.

But, when will we be able to have an android assistant in our own homes? We asked our readers to make their own predictions on this matter and got some varied responses.

Half of responders predicted that there will be a humanoid robot in every home, citing several different arguments. Solmaz Sadeghi said, in the Futurism survey, that another 15 to 20 years will likely be necessary to develop the technology and make it affordable. A reader who went by “Oblin” wrote that we already have the technology to make smart houses, so humanoid robotic butlers may be an antiquated idea. In any case, Oblin believed robots of some form would be the norm for wealthy households before 2040.

Some readers were less optimistic about the timeline of this technology. Zack Allen said much more time would need to be invested in the technology to make sure it was safe, and even then, there would likely be push-back against it. He wrote in the survey, “So let’s say we perfect the technology where we know they won’t blow up in our face or malfunction and choke us in our sleep, we have an entire generation that has grown up watching movies like iRobot and the Terminator where these machines rise up and kill the humans.”

Allen also expressed concerns that such robots could become self-aware, in which case we would need to consider whether they deserved the same rights as humans. He predicted that household androids would not be the norm until the 2050s. Peter Macchiarulo, wrote that we will never see a humanoid robot in every home, not only because he believes the human body is “incredulously inefficient,” but also because of economic realities.

Robotic reality

A number of experts see robotic assistants in our future, including Rob Coneybeer, co-founder of the venture capital firm Shasta Ventures. He believes that this kind of technology will likely be developed to make our lives easier.

“Eventually, you are going to see the humanoid-type of robot, like in Isaac Asimov’s book, I, Robot. That’s definitely going to happen,”Coneybeer said in an interview with Fortune. “It’s still 20 or 25 years out, but I think that type of robot will fit into the framework of what we think of as our traditional living environments.”

Coneybeer envisioned such a robot functioning with the Internet of Things we see in development today, and, in fact, such robots are already being made. For example, Kuri is designed to integrate seamlessly with smart houses and is just one of several domestic robots hitting the market. Another anthropomorphized — but not yet humanoid — robot is Aido, which is designed to assist and protect.

Although these examples have a long way to go before they have Rosie’s capabilities, society may be more ready for this kind of technology than many would assume. In fact, in 2015, Juniper Research projected that by 2020, the number of American households with robots would increase from one in 25 to one in 10. And, while it is impossible to be sure what the future of domestic robots will be, many signs suggest that you may have one working in your kitchen sometime in the next few decades — if one is not already making you tea right now.

Consumer Tech Accountants Need in 2018 and Beyond

Remember The Jetsons maid Rosie? I recall thinking, “Wow, wouldn’t it be awesome to have a robotic personal assistant to keep me from looking as disheveled as I feel!” never imagining a day when that might exist. I mean, many of us were mesmerized by something as simple as a Giga pet. This is all on my mind because the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018 wrapped up Las Vegas a little over a week ago. Well, ladies and gentleman, the future is now. Robots galore! Bigger screens and thinner laptops. It’s all very exciting.

So what technological advancements might go on an accountant’s wish list? Here’s mine:

1. Who has time to plug in during busy season?

Accountants — auditors in particular — are a nomadic bunch. And, since we dart from one client to another, we’re left juggling many mobile devices. We are tethered to our work and an outlet (at least when the batteries die).

Device charging is on the hot seat for innovation, and a dead battery is not going to be an excuse much longer.

In the short term, all accountants should invest in a power cell, external-battery pack. It’s like having your own backup generator. Very handy. One Wall Street Journal reporter who went to the show recommended this nifty laptop case:

Yes, one of the most exciting things I saw at CES was a protective laptop sleeve with a built-in battery. The $200 Incase Connected Power Sleeve can fully recharge a MacBook Pro with its big 14,000-mAH battery. It has a USB-C port and cord and a regular USB port so you can charge laptop and phone at the same time.

It will be available in the third quarter of 2018 according to the Incase press release.

Although it’s a couple years from being mainstream, inventors are working on making charging your phone and laptop completely wireless. The first demos were unveiled at the show. Again, the same reporter wrote about her first-hand account:

I got a look at Ossia Inc.’s Cota wireless power technology in Las Vegas last week. In one demo, a giant transmitter installed in a wall lighted up a lightbulb about 6 feet away. That same transmitter also powered special AA batteries, which powered a little LED light. Ossia says its technology can reach up to 30 feet right now, depending on transmitter size and the environment.

One of their competitors, Powercast, is also working on similar tech called the Power Spot. The press release said:

Creating a coverage area like Wi-Fi, a Powercast transmitter automatically charges enabled devices when within range. The transmitter uses the 915-MHz ISM band to send RF energy to a tiny Powercast receiver chip embedded in a device, which converts it to direct current (DC) to directly power or recharge that device’s batteries.

Inventors in this arena (Ossia, Energous, and Powercase) all insist their technology is safe. But, I’m worried we all might start glowing if we supercharge our air too much.

2. If you work too much for a real puppy, why not a digital one?

Owning a dog might be too much of a commitment if you are planning to work in public accounting. Rather than neglect the real thing while you’re busy cross-footing into the wee hours, why not get the next best thing? Sony’s Aibo robot dog is more lifelike than ever. Plus, the price is down below $2,000. The last version of the pup was discontinued in 2006 when the price point deterred people and interest faded. The price hasn’t dropped a ton, but the features are more advanced (e.g., Aido can now find a bone, even if fetch is still a little tough) and it’s AI-enabled so it can recognize people in your family. All the fun of a real dog (sort of), and no danger that your Roomba vacuum will have a run in with dog poop.

3. Is client travel a pain in your neck? Lighten the load with a suitcase that follows you around the airport, hands-free!

Instead of an actual puppy robot, how about a suitcase that follows you around like one? Several robot suitcases debuted at CES 2018, and they’re ready to tail you around the airport like a little shadow. Travelmate launched a crowdfunding campaign to get rolling on the project about a year ago (pun very much intended). But there are still some glitches that need to be worked out according to this demo, such as top speed limitations if you need to dash from one gate to another and situations when the bag loses you and starts wandering around like a lost child. But, I’m sure they’re working on it.

Would you give it a double take the first time you see one in the airport? It does look very odd. I still stare dumbfounded when I see someone cruising around on a Segway. I feel like this is in the same category.
