hi i have some thoughts on this so here's a little ramble

anon i really don't think you are harming anyone by keeping him on your f/o list. i don't know if fem presenting = fem aligned to you personally but even if it does, my point still stands. you probably aren't going out of your way to harass fans for discussing him as a gay man, and you aren't trying to completely erase his queer identity.

i think there's a lot of misconception in fandom culture about queer erasure. in my personal and unprofessional opinion the main issue is calling a queer character straight - calling a gay character bi/pan/aro/anything else is not the end of the world and you aren't actively harming queer people by having a headcanon, especially about your partner that you clearly care a lot about

i do understand the other side of it - that he has a canon queer label and a lot of people will want to hold on to that representation - but i think that's typically a good argument in general shipping culture (as in, someone headcanoning a gay man as bi to support their canon x canon het ship). selfshipping imo is a whole other category of fandom culture to canon shipping and holding selfships to the same standards and 'rules', i guess, as cxc ships won't really work because selfshipping is about your personal relationship w/ a character.

at most you might want to be careful about what you say and how you say it to avoid backlash but tbh...? the parts of the selfshipping community i've been in have been chill enough that i don't think anyone's really gonna come in your inbox yelling at you.

tl;dr do what you want forever. you love him, he loves you & the creators putting that label on him can't really prevent you from liking him

I don't really know how to feel right now, I've adored my f/o for over a year now and then the creators of his source said that he was gay recently. I'm nonbinary, so it kind of shouldn't matter but I'm extremely fem presenting. I've loved him dearly, and I don't know if I should stop out of respect or not

to the fellow chronically ill & physically disabled selfshippers: your f/o is always going to be there for you, through all the ups and downs of your health. they'll be by your side through all your flare ups, getting you whatever you need; painkillers, hot water bottles, ice packs, snacks, blankets, anything. they'll be there to be your advocate at your medical appointments when things just feel too much for you to handle, and they'll be by your side holding your hand the whole time. if you use any kind of mobility aid, imagine your f/o helping you decorate to make it feel more you! maybe you spraypaint your cane, add colourful spoke covers to your wheelchair, add stickers of your favourite things to your crutches, or maybe some fancy fake ivy to your rollator! if your f/o is also chronically ill and/or physically disabled, just imagine the solidarity of having a partner who understands your struggles on such a personal level. you're both there for each other during all your highs and lows, your flare ups, your medical appointments, absolutely anything. it feels good to return the favour when they're struggling when they've done so much for you.
