you ever think about how “mountain dew” is a really poetic name and how, if someone didn’t know what it was, they’d probably guess “some herbal tea made from the finest leaves of the Alps”. but instead, it’s just, radioactive gamer soda

How to identify stolen gifs
I've been seeing what look to be stolen gifs (stolen meaning copied and pasted either from another creator's gifset or from Google images, without giving any credit to the original creator) in the Narnia tags and wanted to address how to identify stolen gifs because this isn't the first time I've seen stolen gifs in the fandom tags.
Previously when gifs like these have been posted, they've gained a lot of notes, so I wanted to post a quick guide this time on how to identify stolen gifs so that stolen gifsets don't gain as much traction in this fandom. Creators put a lot of time into their creations, and they deserve credit for their work.
Here are some of the key clues that gifs have likely been stolen:
1. COLORING
Creators spend a lot of time making sure that coloring is consistent across a gifset, so one of the easiest ways to tell if gifs are stolen is if they look very inconsistently colored and edited. This could look like a mixture of warm-toned and cool-toned gifs, or very bright gifs mixed with duller or paler gifs. Generally, if the gifs look visually inconsistent and off, they could be stolen gifs.
2. SIZING
This is another dead giveaway. When creators make gifsets, they size the gifs so that they fit within Tumblr's dashboard requirements. Gifs must be evenly and uniformly sized so that they display correctly on the dash. For a two-column gifset, for example, gifs that are displayed next to each other will be the same height and width, or else they will display at incorrect sizes and ruin the layout and appearance of the gifset. Stolen gifs are always different sizes from each other because they have been stolen from many different posts whose original creators sized their gifs differently to fit the layout they wanted (e.g., a two-column layout of eight small gifs vs. a single-column layout of six narrow gifs).
I know that enlarging images has changed recently on mobile and become more difficult, but on desktop, it's still very easy to click on gifs and view them enlarged next to each other. If one gif is much taller or larger than the other, yet they have been posted directly next to each other in the gifset, those gifs are most likely stolen.
3. RESOLUTION/SHARPNESS
As with sizing, stolen gifs pulled from various gifsets and posted together in a new post often vary widely in their resolutions (sharpness). This is because 1.) the gifs were originally created at different resolutions and sizes to fit the layout the creator wanted, and 2.) because the gifs are not uniformly sized in the new post, they are all displaying at sizes they weren't meant to originally, which distorts their resolution. If you see a gifset with some gifs that look very sharp and others that look very blurred or distorted, it's probably made of stolen gifs.
4. TAGS
Most creators use edit tags to help their creations get more visibility (in this fandom, #narniaedit or #tconedit). They also usually use the tracked tags of other content creators (like #user[insert name], #[insert name], or #blogurl) so that those creators will reblog their gifsets and give them increased visibility.
Stolen gifsets, however, typically don't use those tags. Instead, they often use a long string of popular tags within the fandom—different variations of the fandom's name, a slew of different characters in the fandom (even if those characters don't appear in the gifset), etc. Tag spam, basically. If you see a gifset that fits the above criteria and has some wonky tags, it's most likely made of stolen gifs.
BOTTOM LINE: If you want to post gifs on your blog, reblog them from their original creators. If you want to include gifs in your own original posts but aren't able to make gifs, use Tumblr's gif search function, which gives credit to the creator of the gif. It's right in the text post editor (screenshotted below), so there's no reason to not use it.

If any gifmakers want to add on to this, please do!
