Final Video

I can see how much the colour effects the video, making it looks more professional. I could say that I am happy with this final version of my video, although I do think that I could have explored more and show more of my potential if more time is given to us for this project.

Colour Palettes

I have decided to use colours for my sound sync since it would be more interesting than black and white. To find the right colours without making it clashing with each other, I have researched for colour palettes on the official Adobe page as well as on Google Image.

Here are some really interesting palettes that I think suit my sound sync.

The reason why I chose pastel colours instead of other colours are because I think the softness of the tone in pastel colours could make the video to have a clean look. Whilst I don’t mind using dark colours, I think bright colours could give a glaring look to the piece. A good example for my thoughts on this are the Google Material Designs which Geraint showed to us.

As you can see, most of the colours that Google Design used are soft colours, which gave them the ‘clean’ look to the designs.

I have chosen this song as my favourite out of all of the ones that I have listened to. This would be the song to use as my final sound sync video.

My Development

The Result

The beat is quite ‘airy’ and calm, which is the opposite of what I was expecting to end up with at the beginning of this project.

This sound is quite quick-paced, however I think it would be interesting to see how the animation would turn out with this audio.

I love this soundtrack because the instruments being used could be heard separately which would make it easier to animate. I could already imagine the playful vibe that goes with this soundtrack

I think this animation is much better than the others since I made a good use of the speed graph editor. However, I have asked Omm on what she thinks about this animation and she advised me not to keep the circles on 0:07 since it messes with her eyes. I would keep this in mind and try to do better.

The beat of this audio is simple with consistency of the same instruments playing. Although this would be an easier approach to animate, I think there wouldn’t be much animation going on in the actual piece.

My Test Video

There are a lot of repeating sounds in the audio that I wasn’t sure if I should use different shapes or keep it the same. The animation is still slow but I have learnt new techniques after this test video.

This is one of the audio that I would prefer to be in my sound sync. I am aiming for a simple upbeat song since it would be smoother to go with the animation.

The reason why I consider this is because there are some sounds in the audio which stands out that would make the animation to have a playful theme with the sound of what I think is the bubbles popping.

My First Test Videos

I have cut the audio to two parts since I noticed that both of them have different tones.

This is the first attempt on sound sync, and I must admit that I dislike it. I think it is too simple and this piece is more experimental which gives off the ameteur look to it.

How I created it

Rather than screenshots, I think it would be better if I record my screen since it shows what I have played with and what I ended up using.

My Second Test Video

This one is much more successful than the first one. I took inspiration from “Anaconda” however, I didn’t notice how odd the rectangles look like until I asked for other’s opinion.

Now I know why Paul always gets high marks on all of his projects.

Despite that, I have also recorded my screen for the second test video, showing developments of my progress.

Research from YouTube

I began my research on YouTube and have undeniably found a lot of the past students’ work from this project. Even though I am really impressed with how they ended up with this project, the main focus for this research is to see how motion designers in the industry produced their piece.

Other than the past students’ work that I found, most of the results which show when I searched for “motion graphics” are designers who used this technique to introduce themselves and what they can do with their skills. This is one of my favourite because the soundtrack fits with the animation nicely. Even though it is not 100% syncing to the beat like how we are supposed to do on this project, the smoothness of the animation is the one that caught my attention the most, which have given me more inspiration.

I believe that this is a popular motion design piece - since it was produced by Apple. Simplicity has always been their main key to deliver message to their customers, and I look up to that. It shows that the best design doesn’t have to be complex. With this as one of my inspiration, I am planning to experiment with simple lines as an early development of my piece.

The strongest part of this work is the message that it carries. This has really hit me harder than I expected since it reminds me of the first time when I had an interest in being an artist; knowing really well of the pros and cons of the path that I’ve chosen. I think this video is successful in delivering and leaving the audience into a deep thought about the message. On the other hand, the typography designs were impressive with beautiful animation which fits with the theme of the video.

I love this piece because it is simple and synced well to the music. I could tell which effects that the artist used due to the recent lessons that we had; which is always a good thing because it means that I could create something like this.

A sound sync music video is one of my favourite thing to watch since it all seems to have its characters and traits with the theme of the music. This piece is one of the best one that I’ve seen of a music video remake because of the images being animated match with the lyrics.

Audio Research

There are a couple of channels and artists which create instrumentals, one of them is called “Worldwide Beats” which I have found on YouTube.

Most of their musics are upbeat, which I think would be great for this project. The interesting part about this is how they have also animated their logo to the beat of the music, which I think synced really well.

Other than that is a channel which sells soft instrumental music on YouTube; they are called “AudioTrend | Background music for videos”

They have also animated shapes to their videos. Since this channel hasn’t really produced a lot of music, I already have a favourite on which sound is good for my project.

There is also a channel where they created a range of music from cinematics to instrumentals. It is called “ e-soundtrax | Background music for videos ”

Another channel that I have long subscribed to is a channel called “ Sound Explorer ” where they mix music from different artists. Their work is so professional and the sync to the beat of the music are simple but effective.

The only disadvantage of this for the purpose of my project is the length of each videos, which mostly goes up to 1 hour. Here is one of their videos.

Lastly, a good friend of mine has shared this channel which he found on SoundCloud. Other than the simple beat, I am glad that the length is just under a minute since it won’t have awkward cuts if I ended up using any of the song from one of the channels above.

Sound Sync in Lyric Videos

These are the latest lyric videos that I found interesting which relate to this project. I think the way the animation works with the song is really simple and creative; with Castle On The Hill mainly using the paint dragging technique and animate it to sync to the sound.

Live Action Research

Although I have pretty much set my mind on the motion graphics approach for this project, I am still interested on seeing how live action fits with sound sync.

Even though this is not exactly “sound being added later in post-production,” it is such a simple idea in sound syncing. Even though this adds to my idea on the live-action path for this project, I still think that motion graphics would be much better approach for me.

Experimentation from Lectures

Here are my first approach in sound sync based on the lectures that I have attended.

I think the live action is quite cool to sync with since you can play with the mood of the scene based on the music and the sound effects that you used.

I personally think that animating letters are harder than animating shapes, since there are certain limits on which effects work and which doesn't. 

This animation is not the best that I could come up with since this was done quickly. Even so, I could recap effects like the ‘repeater’ and the ‘trim path’ since the last time I used it was for my title sequence project.

Examples from The Blackboard

I have watched the examples from the blackboard and really love their work. Below are my favourites from the link provided and why I chose it out of all of the others.

I believe this came from the past student from my course. Other than his smart way of portraying the lyrics, the animation is really smooth as well.

The reason why I like this piece is because of how every shapes represent a sound. It plays nicely with the animation and make people recognise the beat and the instrument it was being represented to.

This has been my favourite ever since the first time I saw it. This is because the pace of the song is quick paced and the animation is very smooth. The expressions on the animation also help to make this piece looks quirky.

This piece seems more complicated than the others above. However, there are some elements that inspire me.
