Ikuhara and Miyazaki are two anime directors I love whose most famous works tend to involve strong feminist themes and amazing aesthetics, but I have a powerful gut feeling the two would never be able to collaborate on a project.
See Miyazaki can work with Takahata because they both have very similar philosophies and sensibilities, even if devotees of both can spot the differences. Miyazaki and Ikuhara have wildly opposing approaches with filmmaking in naturalism vs stylization, with Miyazaki being mostly pretty straight-laced while Ikuhara’s default mode is High Camp. And while Miyazaki’s works can be tough, Ikuhara’s at-times perverse satisfaction in fucking with his characters would probably offend Miyazaki on a basic level to the point where they’d probably wind up getting into a drunken fist fight like those two old men at the end of Up.
