Brotherhood

"Bro." Anthony said as his voice cracked. Standing in the doorway to enter his brothers room Anthony stood there, terrified. "Can we talk?" He asked as he made his way into his brother's room. "Dude, what's going on? You look like you're about to pass out." JD said jokingly as he nudged his brother on the shoulder. Anthony just stood there, then taking a seat on JD 's bed. Sitting there Anthony's leg began to shake tapping his left foot on the floor. Clasping his hands together Anthony looked down on the floor then looking out the window, then looking out the doorway to leave his brother's room. Anthony was looking anywhere but at his brother as Anthony didn't know where to start or if he wanted to continue the conversation. "Dude, you're scaring me, what's up Anthony?" JD asked as Anthony finally looked at his brother, looking him straight in the eyes. "JD." Anthony said with his voice cracking again. "Tony, what's going on? You know you can tell me anything. Right?" With his fingers still clasped together Anthony began to fiddle his fingers looking down at the floor. "Whatever you have to tell me can't be that bad. Can it? It's not like you got arrested or anything is it?"

Anthony knew at a very young age that he was into the same sex as he remembers being attracted to men at the age of five. Thinking it was normal Anthony remembers as if it was yesterday asking his mother if it was normal. "Mamma." "Yes, sweetheart." "There's this boy I like at school, his name is Sam, he has these gorgeous blue eyes, very attractive." Anthony said with a huge smile his eyes widening. "Oh, you mean a girl? I bet she does have very beautiful blue eyes. What's her last name? Samantha what?" "No! Momma! Sam is a boy, silly." Anthony continued still with a smile on his face. His mother placed him in the shopping cart, both making their way into Target. "Quit talking like that, Anthony. I think you are confused. You're not into the same sex, you are just confused and there is probably a girl named Sam that you like. I can't wait to meet her. Shall we invite her for a playdate?" Elizabeth said as Anthony nodded and left the conversation at that. Anthony sat in the cart looking around, staring his mother in her eyes, the smile on his face disappearing.

Anthony wasn't confused as he knew who he liked and what sex he liked. It appeared his mother didn't want to hear what Anthony had to say as he never brought up liking the same sex again not knowing how his siblings would handle the truth. His own mother didn't want to hear the truth as she just played it off and ignored the situation. His own mother who was supposed to protect him, to be there for him, she wasn't. Elizabeth didn't want to hear what Anthony had said, denying the person he was, telling him he was wrong for feeling the way he was making him seem like he was confused and didn't know what he was talking about. Anthony knew exactly who he was and if he had to hide who he was from his family, then so be it.

The conversation Anthony was about to have with his brother was the first conversation he'd had about his sexual orientation since he was five with his mother. "No. No, nothing like that, I've never been arrested a day in my life." Anthony said jokingly as he soon became completely quiet. "Anthony, what the hell is going on with you? You've never acted like this before." JD said pausing, taking a seat next to Anthony, placing an arm around him. "I thought we could tell each other everything. What's going on little brother?" Anthony took a deep breath in, letting it out through his mouth leaning his head on JD 's shoulder.

It was quiet between the two for a moment. Anthony took another deep breath in, then sighing. "I'M GAY." Anthony blurted out as JD didn't say anything for a moment, as it felt like a lifetime to Anthony. "That's it?" JD replied as Anthony was surprised by his reaction a bit confused with Anthony thinking it was going to be worse. "Dude, you're still MY brother and I'm going to love you no matter what. Our relationship isn't going to change just because you're gay. I'm always going to be here for you Anthony, remember that." JD said hugging Anthony tighter as the two sat there for a few minutes.

That day Anthony realized he could always count on his brother and their bond would only get stronger no matter how many miles apart they were. Anthony realized their brotherhood was something he would never take for granted and knew he was glad he had JD for a brother with their relationship only getting better.

It's Now or Never

The sound of Anthony’s heart made him even more nervous. He held his cell in his hand, but couldn't find himself to dial his brother’s number. He felt like he could tell him anything, but this news was something big, and it was something his brother would have been the first to know. But Anthony didn’t tell anyone in his family he was getting married. He would have told JD with how close they were but for someone he kept his mouth shut. It felt like it was something just for Anthony and by telling JD he was going to feel judged and he might talk Anthony out of getting married, but Anthony knew this is what he wanted to do.

With his thumb on the green button Anthony held it over the button as he couldn't seem to press it. This was the first time Anthony felt nervous about telling JD something since he came out to his brother. All he could hear was the sound of his heartbeat as it was getting louder and everything else in the room had become silent. Come on Anthony! Anthony thought to himself. It was only his brother, and he would understand. Wouldn't he? Anthony was totally second guessing himself and he hated himself for it.

If JD took the news well, then hopefully his other siblings would take the news well, as well. Getting married was a big deal to Anthony and all the thoughts and conversations he had with JD when he was younger came flooding back. After losing Logan, Anthony didn’t think he would ever be getting married again, but he was in love and knew Atticus was the man he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. It had been fifteen plus years since he felt this way and the I only man he truly felt this way with was his late husband Logan. He was the man he thought he’d spend the rest of his life with and start a family with, grow old together, but I guess it wasn’t in their future, in his future. When Anthony lost Logan he was devastated and the one person he leaned on was his brother JD. It was because of that is why Anthony didn’t think JD would understand.

It's now or never. Anthony thought to himself as he finally hit the green button on his cell phone. Each ring Anthony’s heartbeat became louder. On one hand Anthony hoped JD didn’t answer, but on the other hand he just wanted to tell him and get it over with. JD was still getting to know Atticus as they had only met a few times and Anthony really didn’t know how JD liked or even thought of his husband. Hearing the voicemail Anthony couldn’t help but smirk. “Really? What? Did you start screening my calls?” Anthony asked as he hoped his brother couldn’t tell Anthony had a shaky voice. “Well, call me back. It's your favorite brother.” Anthony couldn’t help but say with a laugh as he hung the phone up and took a deep sigh of relief.

Let's Go Home.

“Ant!”

Oh lord. Anthony thought to himself as his brother walked in.

The way JD said his nickname Anthony knew something was up. By the tone of his voice it sounded like JD had another idea, or at least another plan. They had barely been in LA a few weeks and Anthony knew JD already wanted to change something major with their tavern.

“What is it?” Anthony asked hesitantly as JD made his way to the kitchen table. He took a seat beside Anthony as all Anthony could see was the excitement on his brother’s face. He was looking forward to hearing the news his brother had, but at the same time worried about what was going to come out of his mouth.

“Well? Are you going to tell me? Or are you just going to sit there with that stupid smile on your face?”

Anthony couldn't help but roll his eyes as at this point Anthony just wanted JD to spit out whatever he came in to tell Anthony about.

“Do you remember that building I wanted to buy for the tavern that wasn't available in Charlotte?”

“Yeah.” Anthony answered hesitantly as he guessed where this was going.

JD was about to speak but Anthony cut him off. “Let me guess, the building recently became available, and you want to buy it.”

“Yeah.” JD said surprisingly, as he was shocked Anthony put it together. “How did,” JD started. “Dude!” Anthony said as he just rolled his eyes.

Since they were young it seemed like they were finishing each other’s sentences or knew what the other one was thinking. Which shouldn’t had been a surprise to anyone that knew the two.

“I know we just moved to LA but what do you think about moving back home? Finally open the flagship tavern in our hometown?”

Digesting what JD had just suggested, Anthony was a bit taken back. They hadn’t been in LA for a month yet and JD was already wanting to leave. Hearing what his brother was saying, Anthony was feeling a bit homesick, and being around his sister and other older brother would be nice as he didn’t spend nearly as much time with Travis and Kass as much as he did with JD.

“I take it you really want to go home. Or else you wouldn’t have brought this up?”

JD nodded, as it seemed like Anthony wasn’t the only one feeling homesick.

“Fine. Let's go home.” Anthony said as the two sat there for a few minutes in silent taking it all in. “Don’t tell me you already put a down payment on the building.” JD couldn't help but roll his eyes. “You know me to well.” “Ugh!” Anthony exclaimed, getting up from the kitchen table. “You’re lucky you’re my brother.” “Oh, you love me!” Anthony couldn’t help but grunt as he gave his brother a look that told him he'd pound him if he didn't shut up. “Come on! Help me start packing.” JD asked as the two made their way upstairs as Anthony couldn’t have been more excited to be heading home, but didn’t want to give his brother the satisfaction of letting him know.

Safe Space

Since his late twenties Anthony has gotten serious about his fitness and has started focusing more on his nutrition. Working out has always come easy for him, it has been the nutrition that has always given him trouble. He loves to eat and could eat anything in sight if given the chance. Finding different activities when it comes to fitness Anthony would always get bored easily or has been hard to even try. One form of exercise that had always given Anthony trouble was yoga. No matter how much he tried he was always too uncoordinated. 

Finding fitness activities he enjoyed was the fun of it. He got to find out who he was as a person and what really interested him. One form of exercise Anthony always enjoyed has been running. Putting on a pair of running shoes and sunglasses made him feel the most comfortable. It's where he felt at home and made him feel safe. The first thing he did when moving to a new town was scope out the running trails and see how hard they were, and which trails he could take Charlie on. Running became his time to think and reflect on the life he was living and where he wanted his life to go. It's when he would ponder all his major life choices. If it wasn't for running, he might now be in LA right now, let alone alive.

Why don't you just marry it?

Anthony hated running growing up. Every time he would have to run the timed mile in school, he would always try to get out of it. He was one of the last ones to finish. He would be embarrassed and not want to go to school the next day.

It wasn't until high school, and he joined the track team as well as the cross-country team and found a love for running. Running after school and completing his homework he would go out for a run and found it was a way for him to clear his mind and not feel so stressed. 

“If you love running so much, why don’t you just marry it.” 

It's something his friends would always tell him because the older Anthony got, the more he would run. The more he would participate in local runs. Every time he was invited out, he would always say he was going for a run, and joining a local run club Anthony found a real passion for running and found it therapeutic.

His friends couldn’t understand why Anthony loved working out and running, but Anthony couldn't explain what running did for him, how it helped him mentally. In a way it kept him mentally fit and stable as it is something he still enjoys doing today and will run with anyone who will join him as there's something about running that helps with the soul.

His family made sure he was going to be okay and ensured he could always lean on them and come to them with what he was feeling. Happy Birthday, BROTHER!

“Hello!” Travis answered the phone, seeing it was his brother.

“Hey bro! how’s it going? I know it’s been a while since I’ve had a chance to call.” JD exclaimed, missing his brother the moment he heard his voice.

“I know you and Anthony have been busy getting the tavern up and running, and you know me and Kass will make our way out soon!” JD couldn’t help but smile hearing him, and their sis would make it out soon. “Well, it might be sooner than you think!” “Oh yeah?” Travis asked, hearing the excitement in JD’s voice. “You know Anthony’s big three OH is coming up and his buddy Nate reached out. He had an idea of heading out to Vegas.”

“I’m down! And I’m sure Kass is down as well.” Travis exclaimed, not letting JD finish his train of thought. “Nate wants it to be a surprise which I don’t know how we’re going to do that, but we’ll figure it out. I’ll let Nate know we’re all down to go, and with his birthday falling on a Saturday I think it’ll be the perfect weekend.” Travis agreed and the two sat there in silence for a moment. “I can’t believe our baby brother is going to be thirty already.” Travis was in awe at the man Anthony was becoming as JD agreed with his older brother with the two of them feeling old. “I’ll go ahead and plan it with Nate, and we can let it be a surprise that you and Kass are coming. I’ll go ahead and keep you up to date!”

“Thanks bro, and this is going to be fun!” the two talked a bit more, catching up as JD told Travis everything him and Anthony had been up to as it sounded like the two were having a great time out in New Orleans. Agreeing him and Kass needed to make their way out to Nola. After catching up the two said their goodbye’s as they were both excited to celebrate their brother’s thirtieth as JD immediately called Nate after hanging up with his brother and the two started planning. 

Waking up in Vegas Anthony couldn’t believe JD and Nate pulled off surprising him with a trip to Vegas. Las Vegas had been one place Anthony had always wanted to go and with the plans falling apart for his twenty-first birthday this was the next best thing. Opening the curtains Anthony couldn’t help but take in the view. The Las Vegas Strip was incredible and looked even better during the day as it did at night. He had always wanted to stay at the Luxor and couldn’t believe his brother had made it possible. 

“This is going to be the best birthday I’ve had so far.” Anthony said under his breath as he couldn’t help but smile. Hearing a knock at his door JD walked in, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY BROTHER!”.  Anthony couldn’t help but hug his brother, thankful for what he had done for him. “Is Nate still in his room?” JD asked as Anthony looked at his phone, seeing if he had a text or missed call from Nate. Nothing yet which didn’t surprise him as he knew how much Nate enjoyed sleeping. 

Hearing another knock, Anthony made his way to the front door, figuring it was Nate. Anthony couldn’t help but be surprised. “Happy Birthday brother!” Travis and Kassandra said together as the two walked in, giving Anthony a hug and then making their way to JD. Anthony couldn’t help but give JD a look as the expression said thank you. “I’m so glad you two were able to make it out! This is going to be the best birthday by far.” Anthony looked at his siblings and couldn’t help but feel thankful and glad to see each one of them on his special day. “Thank you, guys, for everything you’ve done for me these past years.” They all stood there for a moment taking it all in as Anthony’s phone received a text message which broke up the silence.

On my way, I should be there in about ten minutes. Anthony read the text message from Nate, informing his siblings. “Well then! Let’s get this party started!” JD exclaimed as they made their way to the lobby to meet Nate and let the festivities begin.

PHYSICAL APPEARANCE: Aaron was built the six of a football player growing up playing football as well as baseball in high school. Standing at 6'2 he was one of the best football players in high school and in college. When his children were young there were a few times when he played sports with them as he spent the days active and in shape. He spent six days a week in the gym and ate healthy as he has never been the type to be an inactive male.

TRAITS: Aaron has always had anger and hatred in his heart as he has done well in his life to hide it. He is very good at deceiving people and putting on this happy face to get what he wants. He ordered his children to do what he wanted with them not even being aware of what he was doing.

FAMILY: Other than his parents Samuel and Linda, Aaron has two younger brothers, Zachary and Andrew Saperstein who took on the father roles of his niece and nephews once his brother was imprisoned.

SECRET: There has been many things Aaron hasn't done that people are aware of, but one thing he has done that no one knows about is he had been an assassin, killing over three hundred individuals without blinking or feeling sorry for the families.

PHYSICAL APPEARANCE: Elizabeth was slim and lean as she tried to eat healthy and instill the same mindset in her family as she tried to keep her children active. She believed in exercising at least three times a day and wanted to keep her children outside active at least an hour a day as she joined in on the fun. Seeing her children smiling and having fun brought a smile to face and brought the joy out in her. 

TRAITS: Elizabeth had nothing but love and happiness to share as she put others before herself. She lent her help to the community and others who needed it as she gave her time to local shelters and volunteered as much as she could. She was mistreated by her husband as she only wanted to see the good in him. 

FAMILY: Elizabeth is survived by her four children as well as her father Anthony. Her older sister Maggie passed away at the age of five from leukemia as the family was devastated and created a nonprofit foundation in her name.   

SECRET: Elizabeth always had a good girl attitude but there had been a time in her life when she was a stripper and earning extra cash for her family. During play dates and before school functions she would do what she could whether it was at a bar or on a corner as friends and family didn't suspect a thing.

PHYSICAL APPEARANCE: Growing up Zach was always the overweight kid, the heavyset kid in his class. He always got made fun of because of his weight and during summers his parents would send him to fat camp. It was the one place he felt comfortable because he wasn't the only heavyset kid and he wasn't getting made fun of. In his late twenties Zach finally started thinning out as he focused on nutrition as he wasn't a big fan of working out.

TRAITS: Zach has been the most dependable person in the family. When someone needed something they would always call Zach knowing he would come through. When it was time to step up, he looked after his nephews and niece, knowing they needed an adult figure. He was the most reliable one between him and his brother.

FAMILY: Zach is the youngest of two, having an older brother. They are more than ten years apart and weren't close growing up. His older brother would always pick on him and give him a hard time just for the fun of it. It wasn't until his brother ended up behind bars as he got close with his nephews and niece as he was always there if they needed anything and they knew they could always count on him. SECRET: Finding out his brother was into illegal activity and the danger he was putting his wife and kids in, Zach started working law enforcement to take him down. It wasn't until he was locked up for the murder of his wife is when Zach stepped up for his nephews and niece as he didn't have kids of his own. To this day his brother has no idea of what Zach was up to and it's a secret he plans on taking to the grave.

PHYSICAL APPEARANCE: Kass has had a petite figure since she was small. She could eat anything and not gain weight. Her friends and brothers were always jealous of her because they had the opposite effect. Now that she's an adult she wishes she still could eat anything and not gain weight. In a way she's jealous of her younger self.

TRAITS: Growing up Kass was always blunt, and told it like it was. She wasn't the type to sugarcoat anything. She would always get into fights with her brothers because of that and because she was daddy's little girl she would get away with a lot of things her brothers got in trouble for.

FAMILY: Kass is the second oldest of four children. She is the closest with her older brother, Travis. He was the one she would always clown around with. There were times growing up where Kass wanted a sister but being in fights with her friends always reminded her why she was so thankful for having brothers. SECRET: At the age of sixteen Kass got pregnant and not knowing what to do she immediately went to go see if she could get an abortion. Telling her she needed to wait a few weeks, in those weeks of waiting she ended up having a miscarriage. At the time she was thankful because then she wouldn't have to tell anyone, even the father. Not telling anyone is a decision she regrets to this day, especially not telling her mother.

PHYSICAL APPEARANCE: Travis has always wanted to be muscular, with his muscles popping and showing off. Ever since he could remember he was always in the gym and ate healthy and nutritious foods. He has always included JD and Anthony when it comes to working out and has always enjoyed their bonding during that time.

TRAITS: Travis has always been a caring a loyal person, always putting others before him. It's not until he feels betrayed or hurt and cuts the people out of his lives. He tries to give others the benefit of the doubt but feeling betrayed is too much and that's when Travis realizes it's time to move on and cut the toxin from his life.

FAMILY: Travis is the oldest of four children. He has always been the type to protect his younger sister with being the only sister in the family. He hangs out with his brothers as much as he can but with his own life it's not as much as he'd like. SECRET: When Travis was seventeen he got into a car accident and almost killing the driver. The young woman was in a coma for three weeks before waking up. Travis got three months in prison and to make amends Travis has been sending the woman money each month to try and forgive himself.
