Redial: Alley

The screeching of tires, followed by a piercing car horn shattered the constant drone of traffic and mumbling crowds. Everyone close enough to hear it halted in their tracks to observe the spectacle unfolding in the middle of the heavily trafficked downtown street. He jumped backwards out of the way, but had no time to stop and pay the shocked driver any respect. Clutching a black case close to his chest, he leapt onto the brimming sidewalk, forcing himself past the gathering audience.

Dozens eyed him with a mix of curiosity and suspicion as he desperately crawled his way through. They didn’t appear to be in any rush to let him pass, but he didn’t have the patience to ask politely. Twisting and shoving both his own and others’ bodies aside, he eventually broke free on the other side and kept going down a steam-filled alleyway. He could hear the teenager he had pushed to the ground shouting after him. The voice echoed through the alley after him, as if it was trying to weigh down his guilt-ridden conscience even further. It was heavy enough to begin with.

Anomalous Matter

Pepil stood and watched the patterns swirl within the stasis field. He was immensely proud, though equally cautious, of what he and his partner had manifested. Within the extremely dense mass was something that had never existed before in their universe up until that point. Something that was entirely of their own creation. They had elected to name it ‘matter’.

With their current understanding of quantum mechanics, this matter should by all accounts be incompatible with their universe. These particles existed entirely outside the physics of their world, and yet, Pepil and his compatriot Thesper had somehow managed to stabilize them within their reality. Of course, releasing them from their stasis bubble could potentially have some harmful side effects, so it was best to keep them contained for now until they understood their nature better.

Hedon, their lab’s chief anomaly specialist, had a plan to do just that. It was with another type of curiosity similar to this matter which had also been created by their branch. Hedon was in charge of that project, and the results from their team’s experiments were staggering. This energy, which Hedon’s partner had named 'gravity’, had the peculiar property of being able to attract mass together. The conclusion to their experiment was the partial obliteration of their lab as the nuclei of their equipment was fused together, but it was nonetheless promising considering the energy that was released.

The Shrouded Vessel

“I’m tellin’ ya!”

Once, this tavern might have been considered peaceful. At least, for as long as the quaint little village had struggled to keep up with the rest of the world. Most members of the Coalition had no more need for Leviathan Tears, and with it being the only export Gaelston had to offer, its inhabitants were left to themselves, and for everyone else to forget about its existence.

However, two individuals were convinced the town kept some sort of secret. After spending most of their days on a borrowed stormfish trawler searching for old myths and legends, they frequented the local tavern after dark and discussed their findings loudly. Where most treasure hunters would know discretion, these two certainly didn’t know when to keep their mouths closed.
