I wish I could be like one of those Tumblr people who make well-written and informed analyses on their interests and hyperfixations but no I got stuck with the GGAGRRHHD AARRAARFGHFGG. HHGGGGRGGGGRGRRRGGHH MMBBRBBRBJGJGJ KKAAAAAAAAAAA HHHHH AAA !!?,,!??,!
Remark to the one-dimensional ‘sexy Tongan guy’ media reports:
Reducing this inspiring athlete to a sex symbol is disrespectful, ignorant and pejorative. Pita is representing Tongan tradition, wearing the tupenu and coconut oil.
Have a look at Pita’s Instagram where we can learn a lot about Tongan culture and the good causes Pita is supporting and pushing forward.
Olympic rings were made from trees grown from seeds brought by international athletes for the 1964 Tokyo Games.
Olympic torches were made with recycled aluminium used in temporary housing unit built after the Great East Japan Earthquake. The theme and motif reflect people's yearning for recovery.
Olympic medals were made with metal from recycled electronics that were proactively donated by country's citizens over two years.
Neither backed down, you see. One did not stop provoking, the other did not stop tightening that grip. It may have felt thrilling for one of them, or well… for both.
I would like to change my thoughts about this hug. (previous thoughts here) I’ve been listening to a livestream about WOH concert from an expert from the field of entertainment, endorsements and psychology as well as dealing with censorship. I very much trust her judgement about this, and I found her argument very persuasive and logical. I think sometimes when I read a lot of social media it’s very easy to believe in what the majority of people are saying, and thereby ignore the obvious or what is real. (I think at some point I will have to spend time and sit down and take notes from her hours and hours of livestream, so that I can help share the answer to “How did this pass censorship??”) (I also think most people talking about censorship in China don’t know how it actually works, including me, so I’m learning as I go)
Please stick with me through this long post, so that I can explain to you why I now feel this hug is at its essence this
y'all know that feeling when you get a new special interest, and you are trying to do some things that you need to do (like study, do homework, whatever) and you literally can not concentrate for the life of you and can feel yourself almost physically buzzing with the desire to just get to that special interest, all responsibilities and necessities be damned?
Translation: (clip explaining how the “Is it beautiful?” and “It’s perfect.” was born from an adlib)
Zhang Zhehan: For example, that scene with the old fisherman. They kept saying that I was a "beauty beauty beauty", eventually I couldn't hold it in anymore so I turned my head around and asked him, "Is it beautiful?"
I just thought, you see me looking like this, how can you keep saying that I look beautiful? In reality, I was asking it in a very sarcastic way, purposefully trying to probe [him out with] "Am I beautiful?"
Unexpectedly, very quickly, Gong Jun was able to answer, he said "Perfect."
Oftentimes, it's these small details that pushes a role towards a certain direction, towards a certain character development. I feel like this is, when everybody sees it, they will find out—
Gong Jun: It's interesting.
Zhang Zhehan: —Yes, there are many interesting parts.
//end
So the producer specifically asked for actors for the leads (as opposed to idols) and you can really see how that decision paid off with these two.
I’m honestly amazed by Zhang Zhehan and Gong Jun. If you didn’t know, they actually filmed the scenes mostly chronologically (all the beggar scenes filmed first). It worked very well in their case because they weren’t quite familiar with each other back then just yet, so any heavily emotional scenes wouldn’t have had as much of an impact given the underlying awkwardness.
That being said, despite their unfamiliarity, they already had enough chemistry between them to come up with legendary adlibs like “Is it beautiful?” “It’s perfect.”
Honestly, I haven’t been this affected by a pair of actors as I have been by these two.
