Perfect grammar, capitalization, and punctuation

Like absolutely flawless English teacher-style writing with only a single exclamation mark, ever

No mentions whatsoever of character names, settings, situations, or anything that could be tied to the story

The usernames may be identical to people who exist on ao3, but the name is not clickable, and no profile is associated with it EXCEPT when you directly search for that name. What this means: the comments come from an unregistered (not logged in) reader, bots scrape the site for real usernames, attach that to the comment, and post

There has been some speculation about why this is happening at all, and the best guess is that this is a feature that AI-training story-scraping tools are implementing to try and make their browsing traffic look legitimate

I adore the trope of the emotionally constipated over-competent character, the one who malfunctions as soon as they start having feelings and/or receiving affection, but you know what we need more of? characters who are exactly the same but with a sunshine disposition, always smiling, ready to help, cracking jokes. no frowns, only puzzled polite stares when someone notices them. they panic, yes, but only through a smile frozen on their face the moment they realise they caught feelings. someone extremely competent and hard working that is underestimated because they act like the comedic sidekick, finally cracking as soon as they realise they can because someone will catch them. pulitzer worthy

Forget About Everything & Run Away

It was the middle of the night when Sylvain was shocked awake by a voice that sounded exactly like his own. He had been drifting in and out of sleep the whole time, never truly losing consciousness. It was in this half-dreaming state of incoherence that he heard his own voice break through the haziness with utmost clarity.

I could just leave and never come back, it said, sending a cold chill throughout his entire body, killing any feeling of sleepiness as it went. His eyes shot open in what felt like a panic as he tried to shake the suggestion away. Entertaining such thoughts was, well, unthinkable. There were too many things for him to consider. To leave would be to abandon his friends and, though he knew he mostly caused trouble for them, Sylvain liked to think they wouldn't be too happy with him just disappearing from their lives.

There was also his crest to consider. Wholly damned the thing may be, having only caused him grief his entire life, its worth to their territory was nothing he was unaware of. It almost felt like a joke.

But are the Crest of Gautier and the Lance of Ruin really necessary in preventing the Sreng from encroaching toward the Kingdom?

Suddenly his bed was too uncomfortable to stay in, the weight of his sheets feeling more like the pressure of his thoughts. Logically, the voice in his head was right. He could easily have the Lance of Ruin sent back, if that was what his old man was worried about. Failing that, Sylvain was certain his father was more than capable to repel the invasion attempts without it. And, by the Eternal Flames, he himself could easily make a show of stepping out of the monastery grounds just to cozy it up with some woman in town and then just... not return ever.

He replayed his denial over and over in his mind, eventually even speaking the words to himself out loud. It was a pathetic attempt to banish the course of action that his own voice was trying to influence him toward.

Of course, it didn't work. The thought of just running away would not leave his mind.

Fully conscious and dreading being alone with his thoughts should he close his eyes, Sylvain dressed himself. He left his room, taking care to move quietly through the halls of the dormitory.

He headed to the training hall. If his thoughts were not going to let him rest, then he may as well do something worthwhile with his time.
