► ¦ rudolf !
rudolf noticed both her poor pronunciation and the distinctly american accent, nodding once as he tucked the journal into the inside pocket of his jacket. she was a tourist, perhaps, but, really, it was hard to tell. there seemed to be more and more foreigners moving to amsterdam as of late, making it their home instead of passing through for a handful of days. either way, whether she lived there or not, she was relatively new to the city… of course, not that it really mattered. he just had a habit of studying people. “you’re right, i wouldn’t,” he cleared his throat, his own accent coloring his words, “i do appreciate it, miss… and the discretion, as well.”
❛ aleida, ❜ she corrected him, still smiling through her amusement at the formality. ❛ you can just call me aleida. leida or didi work too, but i have a feeling we’re not on that LEVEL yet, ❜ her fingers pointed between the two bodies at her own teasing remark. she laughed a bit before shrugging. ❛ it’s really no problem. i wouldn’t want strangers to just ignore my stuff if i lost it. ❜ the blonde let her arms fall to her sides then, twisting around to look at the small gatherings of people STIPPLING around the place, all living their own lives. ❛ this place is beautiful, ❜ she motioned to the greenery surrounding them. ❛ do you come here often ? ❜

► ¦ jansen !
❝Better things like what on a weekday?❞ He half retorted to her modest insistence and the answers to his rhetorical question were n u m e r o u s in actuality but the male really wanted to see Alieda in particular. Get to know her some, flirt a bit, possibly earn some friendship. Her positive aura paired with abundant femininity served as a much needed escape from the continuous air of wild routine, and Jansen honestly couldn’t wait to hop up and go play with the blonde, especially knowing that there were two of them. ❝I’ll bring some dutch favorites! Bite sized.❞ – A quick stop to the store on the way to Aleida’s place deemed Jansen friendly and ready to save the day (he hoped) with his snacks and company. Clad in casual clothing in shorter lengths to match the warming weather, the male gave a few knocks to the woman’s door, a bit eager during his short wait.
unsure of how else to respond to the boy’s question, aleida shook her head — evidently, to the eyes of no one but HERSELF — and gave him a small chuckle. ❛ touché, jansen, ❜ she admitted. though she very much needed the break, and a bit of human interaction before she went absolutely stir-crazy ( can one get stir crazy if they occasionally leave for work ? aleida would argue so ). ❛ and i will trust your judgement, ❜ she finished off before giving her address, and, ever-paranoid, dropping a text to her grandmother about having a friend over and possibly going MIA for the next few hours, though she shouldn’t expect much LONGER than that.
. . .
aleida heard the knock just as she finished re-tying her hair, which had disheveled throughout the day, and immediately skipped for the front door. ❛ welkom, ❜ the blonde put on her best grin and matching head bob as she opened the door, motioning inside her home. FUNNILY enough, she did manage to keep it ikea-level clean, save for whatever recent toys sara had lying around. ❛ i can grab THOSE for you. make yourself at home — baby’s over there in the living room. ❜

► ¦ haven !
Her arms stretched out a moment too late, and her face grew hot. She almost missed her cue to speak. There wasn’t enough t i m e for her to come up with some kind of persona, and quite frankly she regretted taking three trains from London to Amsterdam, leaving her rather disorientated. She was about to apologize, again. Then she was sidetracked by the attention to the duffel bag which held just enough clothing, snacks, a bag filled with hair ties and combs and other odd objects she had packed on the way or picked up when coming back.
“I’m sorry, again ! Oh, this? I have loads of these, It’s well, u i n t e r e s t i n g. Whenever I’m part of a production I always get everyone to sign my bag on the last night, it’s tradition.” she was fond of the thought and then, her head turned and looked at the blond. “I suppose it’s my version of the summer camp tees, it holds memories in it.”
The range of emotions on the blondes face was interesting, Havens head tipped to the side ever so slightly, and she smiled.
sparks of interest ignited within the blonde at EVERY ONE of the stranger’s words. unsure of where to even start, she let a hand trace the markings of the bag and nodded along to her voice. EVEN seeing as aleida’s original guess was invalid, the actual given answer had been better in terms of practical charm. while summer camps could speak of ILL memories or of TYPICAL childhood events, productions spoke of work, interests and hobbies. a much better conversation starter, as far as s h e was concerned.
❛ production ? ❜ she looked up to meet the brunette’s gaze, a brow lifted in curiosity. ❛ do you act ? ❜ she went on, taking the initiative in assuming the girl meant THEATRE productions, even though aleida knew next to nothing about theatre herself, save for the typical knowledge of movie-musicals. even then, she knew enough to realize that meant next to nothing, so maybe her guess in terms of VOCABULARY would be a tad off.

► ¦ anastasia !
to be frank, anastasia didn’t understand why people were so JUDGMENTAL. fair enough, it was a part of everyday society, but sometimes it just drove her up a wall. ‘ there’s nothing you can do other than prove those ASSHOLES wrong. if i had a dollar for the amount of times over the years that i was told i wouldn’t get a job because i wasn’t a stem major then i’d be one rich girl right about now. ’ anastasia looked up at the people who were passing by the bench, letting out a quiet breath through her nose. ‘ yeah, maybe that’s where it came from. ’ she pulled her camera out of her bag, figuring that the passing people would be good for a transitional frame in her video. ‘ when i started my school search, i told my dads that it was always a struggle to pick a major. on one hand, i love film and television, but on the other, i knew that management was a bit more practical. so, i buckled down and did both – i was able to graduate in four years. it was a lot of late nights and early mornings, but it was worth it in the end. ’
aleida practically snorted at the brunette’s statement, falling into a f i t of giggles before explaining herself with a point of her finger. ❛ i’m a stem major, ❜ her brows contorted in utter HUMILIATION through her otherwise amused grin. ❛ well, sort of. i’m an accountant; wanted to go into english until i gave myself that solid ‘be real’ talk. pathetic, i know. ❜ her shoulders lifted to emphasize the swift shake of her head before drawing her attention back to her tea. ❛ i never really did get that mindset though. STEM work is more secure, sure, but you’re confined, you know ? you’re in this box of this is exactly what you’re going to be doing. no more, no less. why would anyone PUSH that ? i would rather tell people to go for their dreams and be truly successful at what they love doing. assuming they have out-of-the-box dreams, of course. the former would be perfectly fine as well. ❜ she shrugged again, hoping the stranger didn’t mind her blabbering too much. aleida’s eyes followed the girl’s equipment, intrigued to see it up close. ❛ oh, that’s great. you can now LITERALLY spit in the face of people clawing at you about your work by stating you effectively have your plan b.’

‘ people are just so RIDICULOUS these days. ’ anastasia exhaled sharply as she shook her head. leave it to her to spark up a conversation with a complete stranger, someone who was probably just taking a break on this bench the same way that she had. she was only sitting here to take a BREATHER from filming, wanting to make a video of her favorite places in amsterdam. ‘ of course not, but some people think that if you’re a woman and you say that you like makeup and fashion that you can’t have a brain too. ’ she took a moment to look down at the camera in her hands, switching it off and shoving it into her bag. ‘ no, i’ve ALREADY graduated. nice remark, though. sounds like something my non-existent two year old sister might say. ’
aleida only nodded in agreement, sympathizing with what the girl was going through. while, evidently, aleida had always been judged for much different things, she was no stranger to the odious thoughts of strangers. ❛ that’s true. but really, what is there to do ? it’s a toxic mindset we can only hope eventually WEEDS itself out of society. ❜ she shrugged, attention drawing back to her drink to take another sip. aleida laughed at the brunette’s reply. ❛ i have a two year old. that’s probably where i get it from. ❜ she smirked, brows raising playfully. ❛ congrats on accomplishing that though, seriously. i thought about double majoring, but i’m the TYPE of gal to push things away once they start sounding too difficult. ❜

She wasn’t even paying attention to her bag.
Once white, covered in signatures from everyone on the team she had been on. She herself sat in one of the m a n y comfortable mismatched armchairs which only seemed to swallow her short frame up. Her hands moved, stirring the coffee by the straw. Her foot swung back and forth, one crossed over the other, and with each back swing she nudged the bag back ever so slightly. She was back. It was nice to be in these same familiar surroundings. Thick smoke clung to the air of the artisan coffee shop, which sat at the end of a rather nondescript road, and seemed relatively normal. From the outside. Inside the tortured souls of everything from philosophers and writers, to dark swan like dancers, and m a c b r e actors sat around. She herself belonged to the latter, she had a frown settled on her face. As she sat there, she wondered why she had not gone straight to her apartment, but had instead installed herself here.
“Oh shit. I’m so sorry I didn’t even noti- ah gosh !”
you could say aleida had TENDENCY not to watch where she was going. in fact, many did say exactly that. the little blonde would likely argue that her thoughts were simply elsewhere. after all —— she was a self-proclaimed v e r y busy woman. then again, even the busiest of the busy ELITE likely didn’t trip over people and things this often.
tripping over the elaborate bag was no surprise, but it was an inconvenience.
now she had to smile and apologize and make her typical EFFORTS of camaraderie. in an effort to look much more graceful than she was, aleida rose her hand, huffing slightly through her smile. ❛ GOODNESS, no, that was my bad ! here, let me. ❜ she said, reaching for the accessory. ❛ i was up in the clouds there for a second. i should really —— HEY ! ❜ she proclaimed, eyeing the bag, now in her hands, with an amused furrow of her brows. ❛ this is neat ! did you get your friends to fill it up with signatures ? it looks like those summer camp tees i keep finding in old drawers. ❜

“don’t you just love when someone completely underestimates you?” anastasia is speaking to no one in particular, quit literally just airing her frustrations as she sits on a bench. “it’s like, you say that you’re blogger and people instantly think that you don’t do anything or your job’s not important – ‘oh, that’s just all makeup and stuff, no one truly does that for a job’ or ‘you must not have a formal education because of yada yada’.” anastasia’s face scrunched as she sipped her iced coffee, shaking her head. “you should have seen the look on their face when i told them i was a double major – suddenly the girl who does makeup and fashion for a living isn’t following what everyone does like a mindless sheep. what a jackass, can you believe that?”
❛ i do love it, actually, ❜ aleida turned to the source of the VOICE, tone as causal as it would be speaking with an old friend. she had little qualms for fueling chatter, even among strangers. she swirled the straw in her own drink —— unsweetened tea, of course —— before continuing, a glimmer of MISCHIEF in her eyes. ❛ that expression ? priceless. you couldn’t get such sweet justice if they believed in you from the start, right ? ❜ she reached to sip on the beverage, looking up in intrigue. ❛ so you’re simultaneously holding a full-time job and double majoring ? do you ride a fantastic, magenta unicorn to class everyday, too ? ❜ she asked, grinning CHEEKILY.

► ¦ rudolf !
there were few places that rudolf liked as much as the museum, and vondelpark happened to be one of them. of course, it was probably the most popular in town, especially for the tourists, but that didn’t detract from the beauty, and plus, there were a few secluded spots he could fall back on. he was headed to one at the moment, enjoying the sun on his face and the light breeze through his short hair, when a voice caught his attention from behind. he glanced back over his shoulder–(please, don’t be talking to me)–and stopped short when it became obvious that yes, indeed, they were talking to him, not only that, but they were holding out his journal, leather and worn and dogeared. “schijt, uh–” he cleared his throat, rubbing at the back of his neck, “thank you. must’ve dropped it.”
it was her lunch break. at least, what was MEANT to be her lunch break. aleida ate little and quickly, often cutting up meals into various snacks. she had learned to end as many prolonged distractions as she could. now that everyone was out of office, she decided she could use the full, one-hour break. she decided to look around for the ODD attraction. she hadn’t exactly completed her TOURIST bucket list of amsterdam yet. her first stop was evident: a museum. she adored museums. though not much of a history buff, she loved the bits and pieces of the past they offered no less. as she sauntered through exhibits, she noticed TATTERED pages escaping the hold of someone before her. ❛ graag gedaan, ❜ she replied, laughing at her own attempt to pronounce the dutch G. ❛ this looks important. didn’t think you’d wanna lose it. ❜

► ¦ ezekiel !
| — SINCE moving to amsterdam, zeke had done little outside of work. he hadn’t quite inhabited the city to make friends, though he’d acquired a few people that would serve their purpose for the time, and that lack of effort extended fully to his neighbours. which was why it was a shock to the male when there was a knock at his door. he’d always been respectful without loud parties, without inviting over so many people that it crowded the street with parked cars, without causing any disturbances at all; so why a knock? when he opened his front door, head tilting extremely down to see the small blonde that had disrupted his day, all zeke could manage in his abhorred shock was ‘ what the actual fuck? ’
a shot of adrenaline rushed through aleida’s veins at the shape forming in the doorway. why did this feel so f a m i l i a r ? her eyes slowly inched up, almost afraid. then her heart stopped. it must have, because suddenly, everything became static. the smile stuck over her lips flinched, DROPPING into an easy scowl. ❛ zz- ezekiel ? ❜ jesus christ, was she a squirrel ? the name escaped her like a c r y . a plea to be anywhere but here —— clearly hallucinating. ❛ you... ❜ why was it so hard to form COHESION ? fingers wrapped firmly over her plate, looking for steadiness wherever they could find it. ❛ is his your house ? ❜

► ¦ jansen !
Shrill cries rang in the background of the receiver and Jay immediately regretted choosing to call, especially with the well pronounced greeting the girl gave in response. It was his own selfishness at the lack of experience in texting in her primary choice of language that lead to this route and he mentally smacked himself for it once hearing the concern in her voice.
❝ ɴᴇᴇ, ᴇʜᴍ, is this a bad time? I wanted to hang out, see your pretty face again– ❞ The attempt at flattering really showed how a l o o f the guy was about when to do and say certain things, and now was not the time with a distressed baby probably in the woman’s arm. He mentally smacked himself again.
❝I can help with your kid? I’m great with kids you know.❞ He offered, finally managing to say something acceptable in the current predicament. ❝I’ll bring snacks and drinks! Kid friendly stuff. Yes?❞
hesitation hit her harder than rocks. in all honesty, aleida would typically give nothing more than a dismissing laugh at the request, especially with the use of ‘PRETTY’ thrown in there. typically, that would ring the sound of sirens loud enough to lose focus on all other thoughts but a simple ‘no’. still, there was something sickeningly humane in the boy’s tone. almost childlike.
was she NAIVE for trusting jansen ? probably. it might be nothing more than a symptom of seeing a seemingly friendly face among strangers, or a silken voice among sorrowed screams. but she could use the COMPANY. she really could.
❛ mm, i guess that might not be too bad. ❜ she replied after a long pause, voice a little higher than she intended it to be. aleida knew she was trying TOO hard not to sound overly tired. ❛ you know she’s two, right ? keep it bite-sized, easy to chew and —— i’m rambling. you can certainly come if you WANT. but don’t feel forced, okay ? i totally understand. i’m sure you have better things to spend your afternoon doing. ❜

one more to go. aleida expected to live in amsterdam AT LEAST until her child reached elementary, and in her world, that meant making peace with her neighbors. she needed friends. having some NEARBY would only be beneficial. and so, she stood at the last house surrounding hers — tray of assorted treats in hand — and knocked. she took one quick glance at sara, occupied with a friend in the front yard, before diverting her attention back to the door, a practiced speech of saccharine sweetness ready to slip off her tongue with ease.

her gaze is invariably pulled to the blonde’s lips every time she pouts, and this time is no exception. jude half-wonders if aleida is aware of the effect she has on her, and the conclusion is always a resounding YES. ❝ i’m going to get lectured for having a perfectly healthy salad? ❞ she tilted the bowl towards the other girl, proof that she was indeed eating what she said she was. ❝ or should i be eating something else? ❞ the double entendre was not intentional, and jude only realised the implications of her question after the words leave her lips. heat rose to her cheeks, but she felt her lips pull into a smirk anyway.
a practically feverish grin stretched the apples of her cheeks. she nodded, nudging an elbow towards the brunette. aleida was just about ready to compliment jude’s tastes before her FINAL comment got through to her, stopping the girl DEAD in her tracks. frozen momentarily, the same bits of her cheeks now furiously pink, her mouth closed into a smirk, ❛ the salad is fine —— if we’re talking PURELY nutrition. i could always think up a few better options, of course. ❜ she winked, crossing her arms. aleida took a moment to glance around, turning back to jude inquisitively, ❛ are you eating here ALONE ? ❜
