Outline two ways in which old people are represented in the media.
Paper: 1 Section: B Marks: 12/12
Key: Point Evidence Link
One way in which old people are represented in the media is as one-dimensional characters with little substance. This can be supported by Landis who found that representations of old people are heavily stereotyped. Examples of this would be the grumpy old man (e.g. Scrooge), the wise old man (e.g. Dumbledor) and the feisty old woman (e.g. Sylvia Noble). This therefore shows that the elderly are heavily stereotyped in the media and given very little positive, meaningful or accurate representations.
Another way in which old people are represented in the media is not in control of their own faculties. This can be supported by Carrigan and Szmigin who looked at how the elderly are represented in the media, especially in advertisements. They found that old people were often underrepresented, and that when they were represented, it was in a stereotyped way (such as 'smelly or incontinent'). This therefore shows that the elderly are poorly represented in the media in terms of both their numbers and abilities.

Master List + Blog Intro
Hi! I'm a Sixth Form student studying Music, Philosophy and Sociology. I wanted to make this blog to hopefully help other students revise whether those students are studying alongside me or take the subject years after I'm done. This will mainly be about OCR's sociology curriculum and exams but I'm open to asks and submissions about other exam boards.
I'm open to discussions as long as they remain civil and respectful and am more than willing to answer any questions if I'm able to.
Below is a bit of info about me as the blog runner:
Name: Cae Pronouns: They/Them Age: 17 Hobbies: Music (listening, composing and performing), reading, gaming. Favourite topic so far: Media representations of social groups
