It is with a heavy heart that I must bare the news of my son, Colonel John Lauren’s’ passing on the twenty seventh of August. This letter may not be handed to you in time for his funeral, but his grave with remain here in South Carolina at our family’s estate.

He died a hero. He died with your name on his lips. I had heard him say not to tell you, he wanted you to remain unaware of his death, but I could not find it within myself to allow you to remain unknowing of the matter. You were his best friend from what I’ve been told.
