the girl next to me saw me taking this photo and asked if i’d never been to the house of blues before, and i had to be like no i’ve been here, it’s just that eight years ago i saw this weird band here and the frontman started the show in that balcony in a bathrobe

positives:
last week i met maggie rogers twice (2nd time was just in passing) and she signed my record
got to see her at an intimate show at the house of blues
got to be a part of a special moment during don’t forget me where we all held up “we won’t forget you” signs which made her tear up
negatives:
had to spend five hours sitting on a bridge in the cold at 5:20am in order to get tickets
the concert was cut short bc like five people in a row passed out
i caught covid

South Liverpool Homes: It’s 12 years since Arctic Monkeys released their Favourite Worst Nightmare album. Did you know that the photo on the album cover was taken at what is now Saunby Close in Garston, and that the house was owned by SLH?
Here’s some original shots of the band and our team getting the house ready back in 2006. The final photo shows what stands on the site now as part of our Churchfields development.

See, it seems Arctic Monkeys have realised they’ll make a film of their lives one day and with the mature, rounded and relentlessly thrilling Favourite Worst Nightmare have opted to beat the producers to the soundtrack. Except they’ve got the plot all wrong. They’ve envisioned here a Pulp Fiction hotch-potch of dark, acerbic and instantly memorable set-pieces, but the true Arctic Monkeys story is a real coming-of-age heart-warmer. It’s band meets success, band fools around with rules of success, band almost loses success by agreeing to record with a pissed-up Girls Aloud, but in the end band and success are made for each other. And Favourite Worst Nightmare even subverts Hollywood’s biggest truism: the sequel’s better. An unforecasted hurricane.

Happy birthday to Favourite Worst Nightmare, which was released on 23rd April, 2007.
“Favourite Worst Nightmare has zero time for messing about - every song immediately makes its presence felt and ends just as abruptly before hurling the listener full throttle into the next. It’s a 38-minute ride allowing a mere five-minute breather (the wistful ‘Only Ones Who Know’ and the first half of ‘Do Me a Favour’) before carousing its way to perennial set-closer ‘505’. If their debut defined a generation, this record shaped the band’s future in a manner more mature, sexy and - just like the party depicted in the rowdy track ‘This House Is a Circus’ - berserk as fuck.”

the age of the understatement - the last shadow puppets (2008)
“It all began with a polo neck. Al gave me a polo neck for Christmas. Even when we joked about doing an album together, we said that’d be the cover. Alex would be at a grand piano, there’d be a bit of music manuscript, a cigarette burning in an ash tray, and I’d be wearing a cream polo neck.”

Happy birthday to The Age of the Understatement, which was released on April 15, 2008.
“Doing the Shadow Puppets album was when I started to think of what I did as songwriting. Songwriters always reminded me of that kid at school who would go around with his guitar, like, ‘Yeah, songwritin’ man,’ looking wistful. That wasn’t me—those kinds of people put me off. In the early days, I’d write a bunch of lyrics and almost look at them as a sort of joke, to make the rest of the boys laugh. And then we’d jigsaw all these parts together to make the tunes. With the Last Shadow Puppets album, Miles and I took a much more traditional approach, thinking about melodies and chords, melodies and lyrics. That opened the door to more of a purist approach. Every time you write a song, you’re looking for some sort of perfection, and you never quite reach it. You’re always looking for that extra missing piece.”
