When the goofy comic-relief characters from your fave series are actually secretly hurting on the inside and they finally break down later on.

the dynamic between two people who love a third person so much and come to understand each other because of that is so important to me. you would put them first, and so would i. you understand why we have to save them from themself. i trust you with their life, and so, that means more than if i trusted you with mine. the love doesn't have to be the same, but it's powerful enough that you understand why you're not the only satellite drawn into their orbit.

He would sacrifice his everything for you. He'd protect you from the line of fire and lay down his life for you- even if you don't want him to.

"You can't leave me behind, we're supposed to go through this world together, through hell and back." He looks back at you, his shield sparking bright against the darkness and he smiles brokenly, tears streaming down his cheeks.

"That's what we promised, didn't we- my love?" and his shield shatters, the shield that was the hope of his citizens, and originally his own- because what use was it when he had found something other than money to love?

"Cale!" your pained scream at watching him fall to his knees, the prideful, strong, ever beautiful man you loved coughing up blood as his broken arms shake at his side.

Cale's light breaths waver as you rush to his side and his eyes are quickly losing their mischievous twinkle. You cradle him in your lap, blood soaking through your clothes as you cry, trying to use your healing magic on him but he shakes his head weakly.

You don't stop trying, pale green enrobing him as he looks up at you with one thought on his mind. What look you would have when he eventually returned from the dead.

Of course he had a backup plan, how could he throw away his life when his love was still alive and well? All according to plan, he was dying in front of you and breaking your heart as he did.

Well, don't they say a broken heart lasts longer than a simple farewell?

Cale chuckles in his mind as his eyes closed and the last of your wails of his name echo in the darkness.

people who write their fics directly onto archive of our own site do not fear death by the way

in all seriousness, please always keep backups of your works, write them somewhere else (google doc is a good choice) then copy and paste onto ao3 when you're done, because ao3 itself does not automatically save your works for you, meaning you can lose all of your progress
