ok so. i've never played rain world & physically cannot (evil macbook powers) so i don't know anything about the lore except from fanart but my idea:

WFD was the overseer of an aquarium built by/for the ancients ...in the middle of the aquarium they had this like. massive pool type thing called the conservatory. a big artificial lake stocked with all kinds of rare colorful fish and turtles and massive sprawling underwater plants. and his can was stationed in the middle of it ... its job was to maintain the ecosystem & catalogue the different species for the aquarium-goers to look at

its can is partially submerged. not really sure how it would work but i think it could use its can interior as a quarantine/treatment tank area

after the ancients. left? ascended? (not really sure what happens) WFD continues to monitor the ecosystem - he does have a genuine interest in the wildlife. and there's really not much to do. most of the tropical species died off, lizards moved in, and it eventually saw everything stabilize ... it currently has a small group of slugcats

solving the great problem isn't a priority of theirs. (i do not know what the great problem is)

also fun fact it had to make its dress shorter because every time bro zipped around its dress would either get wet (annoying, possible contamination) or catch on its arm .... that is where the dress tear came from. its fond enough of its outfit that it never bothered to get a new one
