see, the reason i don't stress about whether baby boy sees screens or not is because we have yet to introduce any kids' programming to him
the most we've catered to him is getting some nature documentaries to watch with him on occasion. and we also have a hard rule of no giving him the phone or a tablet
and as long as he doesn't get upset when the tv goes off, then i'm just going to continue to not worry about it
and when he's older, i am going to have strict rules about what kids' shows he can watch because I don't want him to be overstimulated
#life post#i've only used a video on my phone with him once#when he was screaming in the car#and even then#i didn't expand the screen to fullscreen#and held it as far away from his face as possible#and it was a video of kittens#not some kids video with fast cuts and intense graphics

This has been a topic in one of my discord groups today and I’m so curious what everyone’s approach is as a writer.
Writing linearly means starting at the beginning of the story and writing each scene in chronological order from beginning to end.
Writing non-linearly means you might start midway through the story and write the beginning later, or you might write scenes at random and join them up later, or you add in placeholders as you write to go back to later (like “add action scene here”).
Outlining means coming up with a sequence of plot points to guide the story - i.e. planning/mapping out what the main story beats will be throughout it.
Personally I’m a linear writer, and I don’t outline. I have a loose idea of where the story is going to go, but that’s it. And I can’t skip scenes or use placeholder text — my brain starts shrieking at me lmao.
#it's according#but i think i tend towards non-linear writing and an outline#i do like to write the opening scene first if possible#but after that#if inspiration comes#i'll jump to a different scene

booktok YA n smut is one of those things where it’s rly hard to criticize it publicly for serious things like misogyny or racism or homophobia n how it enforces capitalism bc 99.9% of the backlash is ppl proclaiming the death of literature is coming bc women like to read porn. like I hate this as well but I hate it for a better reason that these ppl do.
#yes exactly#(and honestly women deserve better written porn#some of those books are literally painful to read)#i also hate booktok smut because of the rise of romantasy#and the fact it is now taking up too much real estate#in the fantasy / sci-fi genre#both in terms of attention and books in the store

the stove saga continues
we can't get an electric stove to fit the cutout in the benchtop
we can't get the cutout widened because it is illegal to cut the benchtop on-site because it's engineered stone (and we could try and find someone to do it illegally but the reason it's illegal is because of the silica dust getting everywhere and we have a baby to think about so that's a no-go)
so we are now going to see if it will be cheaper to replace all the cabinets to get the height clearance for the gas stove that will fit the cutout
or we will look into replacing the benchtop completely
or we could just renovate the whole kitchen because why not just throw as much money at it as we can
we would consider just selling without fixing the stove but I think we would end up losing more money on the selling price than we'd gain by avoiding fixing it because anyone else trying to fix it would have this whole mess on their hands and why do that to yourself when you can just buy a different place
#life post#anyway i now have mandatory questions for any place we look at#how old is the stove#what are the dimensions#is that benchtop made of engineered stone#this is just an absolute fucking nightmare

baby boy has figured out he can interact with the cats when they're nearby so we're working on teaching him how to pet them
it'll go well for a minute and then he tries to grab their ears or tails so still a work in progress
meanwhile, the cats are uncertain about him petting them but they tolerate it

so i decided to watch the Terrifier movies since they're free online through the library and it's fine, not really my thing but I do find what the actor is doing with Art the Clown's physicality to be really interesting
but i'm really distracted during the murders because it feels like all of them should be dead way before they actually die. is it canon that his weird evil powers are keeping them alive to prolong their torture or something?
(also, it does feel like his murders of the women in these movies are sexually violent compared to how he murders men. i hope it's at least a purposeful choice but it is certainly A Lot and i don't care for it)

it's not practical, but at this point, i just want to gut the entire kitchen and re-do it, including pulling up the carpet in the kitchen area because whoever designed this place is a fucking idiot
and we have sink problems as well because someone did a DIY on the plumbing and now no plumber will touch it without ripping it out
turns out that the guy we thought would cut our counter for a new stove no longer does that
so now we are back to square one because gas is the fucking worst and the biggest fucking scam sold to homeowners
anyway, we're looking at either getting all of our cabinets renovated now or converting to electric so we can install an induction stove that does not have stupid height requirements to accommodate a fucking open flame in our kitchen
#life post#i cannot wait to get out of this place#and have a whole list of things to be on the lookout for when we're looking for a new home

the fact that people are still arguing over if gale killed prim...when the entire point is that it did not matter if gale killed prim because he openly advocated for the deaths of hundreds of little girls just like prim on the 'other side' and katniss could no longer see those prims as separate from her prim...and the bombs from 13 stole prim from katniss as brutally and absolutely as the sadism of the capitol would have because they were founded in the same desires for revenge and propangada
#the hunger games#exactly#i understand so much better why gale was like that#what happened in district 12 was horrific#of course he would want revenge#experiencing or even witnessing something like that#kind of breaks your brain#but also gale was 18 or 19?#and he was absolutely used by coin and district 13#in an attempt to manipulate katniss#like there was no reason for him to be included in war meetings#except for his katniss connection#and tbf to gale#he was thinking in terms of adult soldiers and medics#not the situation that actually happened#(do i think he might have agreed anyway#if he believed it would save more rebel lives than continuing to fight would cost?#i think so even though he would regret it after it happened#there's just a difference between theory#and actual actions)

#yes i got a really bad cut/gouge in my leg that needed stitches#however i did not get them because my parents didn't want to pay for an emergency room visit#to just get a band-aid#anyway it got infected and it sucked but antibiotics cleared it up#and after that my dad immediately took us to the emergency room#if we even remotely might need stitches#or had an injury that might get infected#(meanwhile they considered suing the school system for the injury i had#because i was the fourth or fifth kid to get hurt on this wooden box#doing a ton of box jumps#and we had been left unsupervised so the basketball girls#were the ones who helped me to the bathroom to get paper towels#and sent someone to find a coach to help#ended up not suing since my mom worked for the school system and my brother still had several years to go#small town so we would have probably become pariahs)

the more mother-in-law tries to insert herself into our future plans to buy a house, the more stressed I get about the whole idea of even buying anything
I still hate that she was involved without my knowledge at the time in purchasing our apartment
and the more she pushes to take care of baby boy when we're both at work, the more I want to tell her she just can't see him at all
just, god, let us be fucking adults

love when the plumbing & air-con company we call about the bad work they did on our tap tells us that they didn't actually do that work
like, either one of their employees is doing shitty work on the side and pretending like he's representing the company or their record-keeping is terrible
anyway, after they fix the mess they made, we are never using them again because what the actual fuck
#life post#i mean i am not happy with the guy who has picked up the last few calls from us#was absolutely useless when we asked him to come out and look at our stove#completely neglected to check the cut out in the counter or the height to the fume hood#was seriously going to show up with a stove top that would not fit in the cut out#if we hadn't decided to try a second opinion

Here’s something I’m curious about.
Picture this. You’re reading a book, a standard book divided into chapters. Let’s say it’s fiction (don’t know if nonfiction would get different results). You’ve been reading for a while and you want to stop for now. Assume you are not literally falling asleep, you’re still awake and lucid.
You are in the middle of a paragraph, in the middle of a page, somewhere in the middle of a chapter in the middle of the book.
“Power through and finish the book” is not an option, but if you really do that you have my sympathies.
#it depends on how many pages there are to the end of the chapter#10 or less I'll push through and finish the chapter#more than that and I'll probably read to the end of the scene

trying to figure out how to resolve the desire I have to be in school without, you know, going back to school
I'm sure feeling this way more strongly has to do with me not working at the moment, but the desire still comes up when I do work so it's not just that
#life post#anyway the way I've been feeling#I've been contemplating picking up a math textbook#and refreshing my algebra skills#(before doing the same for algebra 2 and trig and calculus)#like that's where I am at the moment and idk how to deal with it

Clean = not dirty or dusty
Tidy = uncluttered, things in their proper places
We ask your questions anonymously so you don’t have to! Submissions are open on the 1st and 15th of the month.
#it's not as clean or as tidy as I would like it to be#but we are addressing it as we can#the key is decluttering before organizing#like I deep-cleaned my kitchen and got us started on a new cleaning routine in it#and the difference is amazing#and we are expending maybe 10 minutes of extra effort each night during clean-up?#which is way easier than the hours I spent scrubbing it down
