Hellooooo! There’s this game called Firewatch, right? Well, I watched a play through of it a long time ago, and thought it was cool but wasn’t very interested in it. Recently, I rewatched it and IT. WAS. AMAZINGGGGGG. Not only was jus the game good (and beautiful), I think the idea of having a job like that is awesome. And so, I fell in love I with fire watching, and decided to write about it! I hope you enjoy my rambles:D

What is fire watching, you may ask? Well, a fire watcher -otherwise known as a fire lookout- is someone who volunteers or gets paid to stay at a fire tower all fire watch season, and you’re also able to spend the night at some even if you’re not a lookout. How long a fire watch season is depends on the weather of the area, and weather or not said area even does fire watching. In recent times, fire watching has been replaced by drones that do what people used to, yet still sometimes do.
An important part of fire watching is where you’re watching from. Some fire towers have little buildings at the bottom of the tower for the lookout to live, while others just have a living area in the tower itself. The stairs can be 60 to 90 feet in the air, but the actual buildings are rather small, having just enough space to house a bed, stove, table and chairs, and, of course, the Osborne Fire-Finder!
The Osborne Fire-Finder is a tool lookouts use to find the coordinates of any smoke they may see, and once they have said coordinates, they use their walkie-talkie to call the forest ranger and inform them of where the fire is. The lookouts don't actually do any fire fighting -hence the title ‘lookout’-, they just keep an eye out in case there are any around. Fire watching may sound boring, and it’s not for everyone, but you don’t just look for fires. In your spare time, you can go on hikes around the forest and mountains, or just sit on the balcony and drink coffee in front of a beautiful view.
In fact, many lookouts choose to spend their time writing. There are countless authors that have chosen to find their peace in writing 10,000 feet in the air, maybe even with a good dog by their side. Did I mention you can take dogs?
As portrayed by many different story works, being alone in the woods for months on end can drive some people a little crazy. Because of that, some areas have allowed their lookouts to take a dog with them. If I’m not mistaken, some places allow cats, too. Certain areas even allow you to adopt a dog specifically for fire season! If you decide to come back next season, you can choose to take that same puppo with you.
In my opinion, fire watching sounds amazing, but as I said, it’s not for everyone. Even so, maybe think about visiting a local or out of fire tower sometime, you may enjoy it! Also, don’t set fire to forests!

Hi!! As said in my username, my name is Alio! I like a LOT of different things, and LOVEEE to talk about them. Plus, it makes me really happy when people are interested in the same things, or when I get the chance to tell them about said things. And so, I have decided to make a blog where I rant about them!! In the future, I miiight have a thing where people can make requests about something they want me to talk about, kind of like a reviewer. Until then, though, I hope you enjoy my terrible teachings! <33
