If The Lord Don’t Forgive Me

Summary: A handsome stranger comes into the small town of Golden Chapel and is immediately taken with the preacher’s daughter. 

Dorothea hums a soft tune and props the laundry basket against her hip. She pulls two clothes pins out of her pocket and begins hanging clothes on the line in front of her. Her long tan skirt sways around her legs as a breeze blows through. Dorothea brushes a stray curl behind her ear. The sun is hanging high in the clear sky, it’s heat unrelenting as Dorothea continued to hang wet clothes out on the line. Just as she’s hung up the last shirt someone clears their throat. 

“Excuse me ma’am? I’m looking for Pastor Bell, I heard he’d be looking for help this time of year.” 

Dorothea turns to face the man and her breath catches in her throat when she sees him. Dorothea had never seen someone so handsome before. He wasn't much taller than Dorothea herself, but it was enough that she had to look up to meet his eyes. He smiled politely at her which revealed the deep dimples adorning his cheeks. “That’d be my father you’re lookin’ for,” Dorothea says, praying it isn’t obvious how taken she is with this stranger’s looks, “He should be back from town soon, if you’d like to come inside and wait for him.” 

“Are you sure? I wouldn’t want to be too much trouble.” 

Dorothea smiles and readjusts the basket on her hip. “It’s no trouble sir, honest.” 

“Well, if you’re sure, I’d appreciate the opportunity to get out of this heat.” He offers his hand to her, “James Ransone, most people call me PJ though, pleasure to meet you Miss Bell.” 

Dorothea takes his hand, her cheeks heating up when he gently presses his lips to the back of her hand. “You can just call me Dorothea.” 

PJ’s smile grows, he lets go of her hand and follows her into the house. The house is quite lavish compared to everything else in Golden Chapel. The walls are all a soft yellow, detailed white molding decorates the walls, the furniture is all carved out of dark stained wood with red and white floral cushions. “Is it just you here?”

“I’m ‘fraid so,” Dorothea said and set the basket down, “My Mama passed when I was thirteen, so most days it’s only me here.” 

“I’m very sorry to hear that about your mother. I am a bit surprised though, a pretty thing like you sitting up here alone all day, I’d have expected your father to have you married by now.”

Dorothea’s face heats up, and she ducks her head, brushing her soft curls behind her ear. “W-well...Papa says that the boys ‘round here don’t know God well enough for him to let them take my hand.” 

A smirk plays at the edges of PJ’s lips. He starts to say something, but is cut off by the front door opening. 

“Dorothea? Are you in here darlin’?” Pastor Bell called from the door. 

There’s a brief jolt of fear in Dorothea’s chest, like she’s done something she wasn’t supposed to. But she hadn’t. Nothing had happened. “Yes Papa, I’m in here. And there’s a young man here who’s lookin’ for work.”

Pastor Bell enters and kisses Dorothea’s cheek. He looks PJ up and down critically. “What kind of work are you looking for boy?”

“Anything you have Pastor, a few people in town said you’d be looking for help this time of year.” 

“I am, the pay is fair; three dollars a week. And you can stay in the loft over the barn.” Pastor Bell puts his arm around Dorothea and pulls her closer. “The only rule, you stay away from my daughter; you hear me?” 

PJ locks eyes with Dorothea for a moment, “Of course sir, you won’t have to worry, I’m only passing through town.” 

It seems to satisfy her father, but Dorothea can tell he has no intention of keeping his word to her father. And a part of her didn’t want him to keep his word. She wanted to see more of PJ, and she wanted whatever seeing more of him meant.

As it turned out Dorothea saw quite a bit of PJ. Her father tasked him with fixing up the church, which meant that he was there while Dorothea taught the children hymns and during Sunday school. He never actually came to church service, but sometimes he would stand in the doorway and listen to Dorothea sing. 

“So the young man your father hired seems quite taken with you.” Emily teases as her and Dorothea walk to the general store together one afternoon. 

“Oh hush, he is not Emily.” 

“Sure, and I suppose I imagined him listening in on you singing yesterday.”

“He’s working on the building, it’s not like he’s seekin’ me out or anything.” Dorothea blushes as she attempts to defend herself. 

They walk into the store and are immediately greeted by the owner, Mr. Harper. “Dorothea, Emily, wonderful to see you girls! What can I get for you today?”

“Afternoon, Mr. Harper, I was supposed to get a bolt of fabric delivered from Edgewater.” Dorothea said with a smile.

“Oh of course! It just came in.” Mr. Harper steps into the storage room behind the counter before coming out with a bolt of yellow fabric that was covered in small red flowers. 

“Dorothea that’s so pretty! What are you going to make out of it?” Emily asks excitedly. 

“I got it to make a new dress, I can make you one too if you want.” Dorothea says as she takes the fabric. 

“That’ll be two dollars my dear.” Mr. Harper tells her. 

Dorothea hands over the two dollars her father had given her to pay for the fabric. She hears the shop door open and turns to see who came in. Dorothea immediately turns back around when she sees that it’s PJ. She can feel Emily’s eyes on her as he walks up to the counter. “Thank you, Mr. Harper, I’ll see you in church tomorrow morning!” Dorothea says as she picks up her fabric and begins to walk out the door. 

Emily follows her outside and looks at her in disbelief. “What are you doing? Why didn’t you say something to him!?” 

“Because, Papa has made a point of sayin’ we aren’t supposed to get close. I don’t wanna make a habit of disobeying my father’s wishes.” 

Emily glances back at the general store and shakes her head with a smile. “Alright, I’m going to stop by the post office to speak with my father, I’ll see you at church tomorrow.”

Dorothea smiles and waves as Emily walks away from her. She’s only gotten a few steps before there’s the sound of footsteps running to catch up with her. 

“Dorothea, need some company on the way home?” PJ asks with a small smile. 

Dorothea shakes her head and laughs softly. “You know my father won’t be pleased if he thinks you’re trying to court me.” 

PJ’s smile grows more playful as he continues to walk beside her. “Who said anything about courting? I’m simply having a conversation on the walk home. Besides, your father doesn’t worry me much, but if you were to say the word I would leave you be in a heartbeat.”

That makes Dorothea pause, she looks up at PJ, and he’s already looking at her so earnestly. She knows in that moment, PJ may not intend to keep his word to her father, but he would keep it to her. If she turned him away now he would let her go on as if they had never met. But despite her words to Emily, she wanted PJ to continue inserting himself into her life. “Well perhaps he should worry you, he may be a man of God, but he’s been known to have a temper.” 

“I can handle your father, I won’t be in town long anyways.” PJ shrugs.

It feels like being dunked in ice water suddenly. That’s right, PJ is only passing through town. “Where will you be headed next?” Dorothea says around the lump growing in her throat.

“Don’t know, I go wherever the road takes me.”

“That sounds lonely, don’t you ever want to settle down?” 

“Not really. I enjoy having the freedom to come and go as I please.” He glances down at Dorothea again. “What about you, do you ever think about leaving Golden Chapel?” 

Dorothea is silent for a moment, looking up at her house looming before them. “Truthfully? Yes. I love everyone in Golden Chapel, but it feels unbelievably small most days.” 

“There’s a big world out there, I hope you get to see it some day.” 

Dorothea looks down to try and hide her smile. “Thank you, I’ll see you this evening for supper?”

PJ smiles and starts towards the barn, “I wouldn’t dream of missing it.”
