Hello! I just read your entire Alex and Lin universe. And then I read it again. And then a third time. It’s probably when of the best fics I’ve ever read. It’s been a crazy month! Would you believe I only just started teaching last week? School got delayed since almost everyone in my school district had to evacuate due to wildfires the day school was supposed to start. Everything's okay now, but 2020 is insane!

Do you have any hamilton fic recs? 😄

Anything by as_with_a_sunbeam is amazing. They are so well historically researched and they write the best sickfics which I’m a sucker for. 

I have a special soft spot for Nap Time by musicofthenight. It’s a Hamilton/Washington slash fic that’s so fluffy and always leaves me warm inside. I always find myself going back to it for a reread. 

Surprise Yourself is a great Alex in foster care fic. It has a twist of Alex having a serious heart condition, which makes things interesting and not formulaic. This one is also very well researched on the medical side.

Yooo you being back and writing this again is so strange for me because i can remember going through your tumblr and enjoying your teaching updates while i was in college and now i’m a whole teacher myself. Crazy how time passes. Also glad you’re writing in this verse again!!

Congrats on becoming a teacher! Are you also in the deep end of this distance learning madness? My district shut us down from using any video conferencing with students two weeks in, so now I’m deep into the strange world of teaching via youtube. That last sentence is not something ever would have believed a few months ago. My team and I were just saying that come June we’re going to have to put together a blooper reel of all of our many outtakes. Most of mine involve me getting frustrated by mistakes/interuptions in an upbeat kindergarten teacher voice.

I feel like Alex would hate audiobooks because he’s stuck reading at the pace of the reader but he secretly (not so secretly) falls asleep listening to Lin’s recording of Aristotle and Dante most nights.

How do you think Alex, Lin, and Vanessa would react to Covid-19 / a Covid-19 like event?

In my head-cannon for the series (is that a thing for your writing?) they are going through it. At this point in the timeline Alex is 19 and going to Columbia, but still living with Lin and Vanessa since he’s not quite ready to be in a dorm, especially with the nightmares. I think Alex would have quite a few rage moments about having to do online school, but would also be doing well mental health wise when his environment is so controlled. I’ve mentioned before that I somewhat base my portrayal of Alex on my little sister who is now 18 and is on the autism spectrum. My family all thought such a drastic change would be hard on her, but from her perspective being required to stay home all day and do high school online is the best thing that’s ever happened to her. 

I think Lin would be very worried about Alex getting it, since his immune system is not great.

I was so, so excited to see another chapter of Flashes today! I thought it was fantastic—John and Alex being awkwardly in love with each other? 😭❤️❤️ So pure! Do you take prompts/ideas for the series? If not go ahead and ignore this, but I’d love to see more of the cast of Hamilton interacting with Alex if you’d like! If not thats totally cool! Thank you do much for all the awesome words you give us, and I hope you have a nice day! 😁

I have taken prompts a few times. For example, the Alex in the bath idea came from a tumblr ask. I’m not great at forcing myself to write things, so it really depends on what inspires a story for me. Alex interacting with the cast has been my most requested by far. I just haven’t had much luck with it, since the more real people you add it, the greater the challenge. There was a little scene with Daveed in the unfinished medical procedures story I posted on tumblr.

Here it is again:

“Hey Daveed, there’s someone I’d like you to meet. This is my…this is Alex.”

A man with one of the largest afro’s Alex has ever seen pops his head out. He looks familiar though.

“Alex. Good to finally meet you officially.”

“Hi.” Alex resists the urge to hide behind Lin. Not cool Alex. Not cool at all! You’re fifteen, not five.

“I’m glad to see you looking better. You really worried me a couple weeks ago.”

That’s it. He recognizes the voice now. This was the guy who called him “baby Lin” and had so frantically called Lin claiming he needed an ambulance. Alex could just about melt into the floorboards in embarrassment. What the heck is he supposed to say after meeting someone like that?

“Wait until you hear Daveed rap tonight Alex. The man’s a beast!” Lin gushes, completely oblivious to Alex’s humiliation. Or is it because of?

“Are you seeing the show tonight?”

Alex nods. Why is talking so hard?

“You’re in for a real treat! You’ve got a certified genius for a foster dad. Seriously, if anyone else had pitched this idea to me, I would have laughed at them, but because it’s Lin... Okay, I still laughed at him. Listen, I want to apologize for our last encounter Alex. We’ve been hearing Lin talk about you for so long, we were a little too eager, but shouldn’t have burst in like that. I’m sorry for the additional pain we caused you.”

Alex gapes at him. Nope—no idea how to respond to that either. He must look like such an idiot.

“Are you kidding?” cuts in Lin. “Daveed, you get that if you, Oak and Ramos hadn’t disregarded my orders to leave my kid alone, it probably would have been another hour before I checked on him? I don’t even want to think about what state he might have been in then. I am so incredibly grateful for your interference.”

Did Lin just call him his kid? What the hell is he supposed to think of that? This is his tweets referring to him as his ‘son’ all over again. Everyone had assumed he had meant Sebastian with that one, but sheesh

Hi! Just wanted to say that your Alex & Lin series was amazing when I read it 1 1/2 years ago, & still ABSOLUTELY gave me feels (reading it thru now for, like, the 5th time). I know you mentioned whooping cough - I hope you're completely well! Also hope you haven't abandoned the series: still LOTS of potential left, imo. (If you have, this is def not pressure, no question. If you're still good to write, tho, this is encouragement, w/e your timeline! :D) You write so well! Thank you for sharing!

Oh hi! First off, I am still alive. Last year I went back to school full time to get an additional teaching endorsement while also teaching full time. Don’t recommend that, but I did finish the program and that teaching year with my sanity mostly intact. 

Thank you so much for this message and all the others I’ve gotten- they really do brighten my day.

As it happens, it turns out the one thing that is better for my writing then snow days is pandemics. Who would have guessed?! Being out of work for the next six weeks a new chapter of Flashes from the Storm (two year late) will likely be out by the end of the month.
