Old Sultan’s Second 🐈
Old Sultan is now one of my favourite Grimm’s Fairy Tales because it just makes no sense. An old sheep dog named Old Sultan is so old he’s lost all his teeth (does that happen to dogs when they get old?), rendering him useless to the shepherd. In order to prevent the shepherd from shooting him, Old Sultan and his wolf friend stage an attack on his child. Old Sultan swoops in and saves the day, and the shepherd decides to keep him. However, the wolf believes he is now owed compensation, and asks Old Sultan to let him eat one of the sheep (why he can’t just take the sheep himself since Old Sultan can no longer stop him, I do not know). Old Sultan refuses, and the wolf declares a duel between them (average wolf response, I suppose?). The wolf chooses a hog as his second, and with no other option, Old sultan chooses the farm cat. The cat is crippled and its tail is paralyzed, standing straight up. As Old Sultan and his second approach the duel site, the hog spots the cat’s tail and panics, as he thought it was a sword (How? They do not look even remotely similar?). The wolf and hog run away in fear, hiding way up in the trees. Old Sultan is able to explain the situation, and they make up (a Grimm’s tale with no horrific ending???).
Bizarre, to say the least. Thus one of my favourites.

Artwork inspired by Little Red Riding Cap (or hood) <3 🍄
I’m in the process of placing an order to get this artwork and a few others printed onto beautiful paper, and I am very excited! Perhaps I was a bit ambitious to start posting work before my website was fully complete, but I just can’t wait. This is my favourite in a collection of Grimm’s Fairy Tale inspired pieces I’ve created, and I hope you find them all as delightfully strange and wonderful as I do.
I wanted to play with line to create the impression of flowing fur, which I think I was pretty successful at. I’ve also realized how fun taxidermy style poses are, and I love how eerie it ends up looking. Though the exposed bone may have more to do with it than the pose. This piece took about nine hours, which is pretty long for me!
I’m not too familiar with Tumblr yet, so I apologize for the somewhat rough state of m blog, but hopefully it comes together soon!
