not to cornplate or anything but the difference in camera angles here goes so crazy
the camera looking slightly up to abbot emphasizes the view, not the world below. when we meet him, he’s contemplating his own purpose and can’t remember why he’s doing this job, which would be alarming except for the camera is behind the fence with robby and the roof takes up half the lower frame. we the audience are on safe and solid ground, which assures us that he’s not necessarily looking to jump down. abbot’s not even looking down, he’s simply looking around.
robby on the other hand: it’s nighttime and he’s in complete emotional crisis, for context. we’re looking down at him from his side of the fence and the frame includes both his position and and what’s down below the ledge as if getting us to consider the jump with him. he’s looking down as if it’s a legitimate option, and we the audience are placed on that ledge with him in that precarious spot.
and this us also reflective of their characters because they’re both attendings and the difference between the night/day shift sets them up to be character foils and these parallels reflect that perfectly. jack was never going to do it that morning; he has a therapist, he’s managing better, he loves the job too much to ever leave it (he says it’s in his DNA). robby’s entire arc and point of criticism from others is that he’s not doing that work to take care of himself, he doesn’t practice what he preaches, and when his repressed emotions have finally boiled over and he’s blown his gasket, he genuinely considers ending it.
10/10 parallels shoutout to the cinematographers and cameramen on the pitt

Okay so as a PT looking back on Jack abbot’s gait on the Pitt. Shawn Hatosy did his WORK for this job. He’s got a weight shift more to his organic/actual leg when walking from the FIRST EPISODE. Even more of a limp/trendelenburg gait in the last episode when he’s leaving the last patients room due to standing and walking on the prosthetic for the whole shift. Big props to these actors/writers/everything for even putting in these little details even just with how he walks

Pope begging the people at DCFS not to let Lena be treated the way he was treated is breaking me. Big pretty eyes full of tears literally begging them to tell her that he loves her and wants her. Begging them to let him make sure that she isn’t scared or in danger. Andrew deserves the world, man.

thinking about how pope, on what he wanted to be the last day of his life, successfully carjacked eight vehicles, robbed SIX banks, blackmailed his own finance manager, and boosted his niece’s trust fund by almost a million dollars. and THEN he picked her up from school and THEN he laid his big ass down in the shower for like forty five minutes. my man was booked and busy and bitch i was gagged and gooped

I do think it's interesting that the assumption is that Jack lost his leg while deployed. Because yeah, he probably did, but also... imagine if he didn't? Imagine if that's how he and Robby met. In this essay I will...

I’m rewatching Animal Kingdom and I need to word vomit at someone.
SPOILERS
Underrated Pope moment: Andre, Lena, and the hurt bird. I mean from the moment they enter the house he’s just in such girl dad mode, especially the precious warm milk moment. The bottomless sadness and guilt when Lena asks about Cath. But when the bird hits the window his voice gets all small and he’s looking to her for what to do. Tells her she doesn’t have to watch but isn’t making her leave, letting her lead again. This is her environment, he’s just there to keep her safe. And then the way he steels himself to put it out of its misery and the shattered relief when it flies off. And his fucking SMILE when he laughs and looks back at Lena.
Im down so bad.
That scene I think is what made me really fall for Pope. You explained it all brilliantly. The way he treats Lena and is letting her take the lead. The warm milk scene is one of my favorites simply for the line about Smurf using the microwave and cheating. As well as him holding the pan. I have a lot of thoughts about that but I won't dive too deep into because it's a tough subject for a lot of people.
THAT SMILE??!!?! Ugh someone just smother me now (and by someone I mean Pope -who said that) and him organizing things and telling Lena it's important to have things in order. 😩

No cause every time I think about Pope Cody I get a little sad. Like here’s this guy who’s said to be the most dangerous out of his siblings and is seen as this monster who will just hurt people on a whim without thinking.
When in reality he’s not even like that or was meant to be like that, but because his own fucking mother groomed him (in more ways than one), into becoming her enforcer and mercenary of sorts, he was doomed from the start. Raised in a broken home, alienated, has a slew of mental health issues that were ignored and only exacerbated when he went to prison on a job gone wrong and his family just left him there and treated him like a hazard when he was released and came back to the only place he has some familiarity with.
Pope’s not this aggressive monster that’s inclined to violence, he’s misunderstood, he’s been used in more ways than he can count, he doesn’t know that he has the ability to be soft and caring when we’ve seen the way he treats his niece. All he wants is to be loved and valued outside of his capacity of hurting others. HES A TRAUMATIZED GUY THAT JUST WANTS A SAFE SPACE TO CALL HOME GODAMMIT! FUCK YOU SMURF! CUT THE CAMERAS!

It’s really something about Andrew Pope Cody and his inherent softness and care when it comes to his niece Lena that really strikes a chord with me. Like here is this man who’s said to be so violent and devoid of humanity, and he did multiple jobs to make a trust fund for his niece, put her into a better school cause she was getting bullied, parented her when her father was actively neglecting her, and is trying to talk to her the best way he knows how. That man really is the father that stepped up. I want to give him a baby so damn bad.
