Books about colonialism now that The Queen is dead:
Colonialism is, unsurprisingly, A BIG FUCKING SUBJECT, and any reading list is going to fall short. (if you want to get versed in anti-colonial theory, here’s a really good beginners list). Because of all this, I’m staying focused on British imperialism, and specifically, events that happened within The Queen’s lifetime.
Legacy of Violence: A History of the British Empire by Caroline Elkins
Ghosts of the Empire: Britain’s Legacies in the Modern World by Kwasi Kwarteng
The Blood Never Dried: A People’s History of the British Empire by John Neswinger
Ornamentalism: How the British Saw Their Empire by David Cannadine
The Decline and Fall of the British Empire by Piers Brendan
Insurgent Empire: Anticolonial Resistance and British Dissent by Priyamvada Gopal
Empireland: How Imperialism has Shaped Modern Britain by Sathnam Sanghera.
The Brutish Museums: The Benin Bronzes, Colonial Violence, and Cultural Restitution by Dan Hicks
Rhodes Must Fall: The Struggle to Decolonize the Racist Heart of Empire by Brian Kwoba, Roseanne Chantiluke, and Anthinangamso Nkopo
Neo-Colonialism: The Last Stage of Imperialism by Kwame Nkrumah
Kohinoor: The Story of the World’s Most Infamous Diamond by William Dalrymple and Anita Anand
Mountbatten: Apprentice Warlord by Adrian Smith
The Great Partition: The Making of India and Pakistan by Yasmin Khan
Midnight’s Furies: The Deadly Legacy of India’s Partition by Nisid Hajari
Partition, podcast by Neha Aziz
Aboriginal Australians: A History Since 1788 by Richard Broome
Ka Whawhai Tonu Matou: Struggle Without End by by Ranginui Walker
The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine: A History of Settler Colonialism and Resistance by Rashid Khalidi

Can you even believe that we are nearing 11 months of active genocide and the only thing that’s changed is how much people care and are interested in being advocates for Gaza (I am watching you all lose interest in Palestine with my own eyes)

The Iranian Regime is going to execute rapper Toomaj Salehi for supporting protests of Jina Amini’s murder by the regime in his songs.
Iranian activist Elica Le Bon says, “Iranians in the diaspora picked up on the fact that the regime tends not to execute people who become known to the international community. We have seen many examples of prisoners that were either released on bail or had their sentences commuted through our “say their names to save their lives” campaign on social media, using hashtags to garner attention for their causes, and even before social media existed, through getting the stories of political prisoners to international media outlets. Once reported on, and once the eyes shift to the regime and the reality of its pending brutality, realizing that the action is not worth the repercussions, we have seen them back down and not execute. For that reason, this is part of an urgent campaign for readers to talk about Toomaj as much as you can, using the hashtag #FreeToomaj or #ToomajSalehi. Every comment makes a difference, and if we were wrong, what did we lose by trying?”

i feel like people are skimming over the uk riots in a way that makes me want to tear my hair out. muslims in the uk are in active danger. immigrants in the uk are in active danger. refugees in the uk are in active danger. people of colour in the uk are in active danger. asian communities in the uk are in active danger. black communities in the uk are in active danger.
there are massive far right riots throughout the country right now and people like fucking elon musk and nigel farage are inciting it and still have a platform to speak. people have used three young girls deaths, people's genuine grief in southport, to try and gain traction for their own racist bullshit and it's working.
a lot of refugee charities have been forced to close leaving many people without support, homes, funding, food, etc. if you aren't able to donate please consider sending a message via the conversation over borders campaign! it will send a hopeful, welcoming letter to a refugee in the uk. there is also a guide to staying safe here.
please do your own research and donate to refugee charities, anti-islamophobia charities, mosques who are trying to rebuild after being destroyed, counter protesters, here are some i've heard positive things about but the list is extensive; southport strong together (support for the southport victims and their families), emergency unity fund, southport mosque rebuilding, riot repair fund, middlesbrough vulnerable residents, nasir mosque rebuilding, hull help for refugees, bristol welcomes migrants,

Please please please, I’m begging people, start talking about indonesia occupied papua. Over the last 50 years Indonesia has killed over 500,000 native Papuans in their occupation of the west half of the island.
This is also a genocide that should be talked about. It needs to be addressed, but it’s ignored on the global stage.
Free Papua!

Btw, non UK users here, would be genuinely super helpful if you could boost posts relating to the far right violence happening and also counter protests. A lot of UK users don’t really follow each other, and also it just helps to increase the chance of people who could go to counter protests seeing posts about what’s happening when. I know posts about our politics; and non USAmerican politics really; don’t get a lot of traction on here, but like despite the UScentrism of the English speaking user base it’s really helpful and beneficial to share these things. The situation is likely downright horrifying to those being targeted right now and it really should be a priority for us to go out and counter this to the best of our abilities

In 1972, MP Bernadette Devlin had to go to parliament the day after the Bloody Sunday massacre that she had witnessed where British troops opened fire on Irish protesters. There, she was repeatedly refused the right to speak on the massacre despite being the only eye witness in parliament and had to hear her colleagues justify the massacre by lying that it was in self defense. She protested by slapping the home secretary, ending up with a six month suspension from parliament.
In 2024, Rashida Tlaib, the only Palestinian representative in the US, has to hear the current grand perpetrator of the Palestinian genocide give an address in congress as a honoured guest, unable to give such an address herself as the only person in congress who is personally affected by the genocide. She is protesting by wearing a keffiyeh and holding a sign that says "War criminal" and "Guilty of genocide" throughout the address.
I see Ireland in Palestine. It is the duty of all colonised and formerly colonised people to see their nation in Palestine and support it as they would their own.

Keep your eyes on Palestine. We know the illegal occupation launches attacks when Western media is distracted.

#and the battle of hogwarts was like weeks after the signing of the GFA
Forgive me for posting about this but some of the harry potter worldbuilding is soooo funny in hindsight. the political dimensions of every single wizard child in britain and ireland being expected to attend the same school in the mid 90s were not thought through in the slightest but what do you expect from an englishwoman I suppose

#american here #i'm about to follow in deirdre's footsteps out of embarrassment for those fellow americans #😭
Hello, american tumblr user. before you is a post about ireland which does not mention anything about irish mythology. if you can reblog the post without making a comment about fairies, magic, the celts, or any associated concepts, you may go. if you cannot, this shillelagh I have in my hand will promptly turn YOU into the next unfortunate victim of stereotypical irish culture. choose wisely, american tumblr user, you will not be afforded a second chance
