I'm pretty stoked that Baldur's Gate 3 won as many awards as it did at the Golden Joystick Awards this year. Congrats on every single one, y'all earned it. Best Storytelling, Best Visual Design, Best Game Community, PC GOTY, Ultimate GOTY, Best Studio, AND Best Supporting Performer?! I'm actually starting to think they have at the Video Game Awards coming up as well.
I wasn't surprised when I heard that out of all the supporting performers Neal Newbon grabbed the Best Supporting Performer award. I won't lie, my initial reaction was "of fucking course he won" but my disdain for the character's fans and discourse aside, I feel it necessary in light of how hard I am on that character on this blog sometimes to say that he played the fuck out of Astarion and definitely deserved that award.

Codetober Day #31
31. What are you most proud of in the last month?
A few things honestly. I told myself I would try to get more comfortable in front of the camera and to that end I did Vlogtober on TikTok where I did a short vlog each day and just talked about myself and life (based on a prompt provided for the month). I didn't really think I would like content creation that much, and while I don't really see myself taking off or anything, it's still a fun hobby. I also completed a pretty large task at work rewriting an entire API, which is kinda big for me since I'm just over 1 year in at this position, so I'm hoping I'm leaving a good impression. I also rediscovered some form of love for Tumblr and a desire to reconnect to what made me wanna get into this career in the first place through this challenge, and for that I'm quite thankful.

When Palestinians in north Gaza heeded the warnings issued in the Israeli military’s phone calls, text messages, and fliers advising them to head south, they thought they were fleeing to potential safety. The Israeli Defense Forces issued the guidance Friday, telling all civilians in north Gaza to evacuate to areas south of Wadi Gaza “for your own safety and the safety of your families” as the IDF continues “to operate significantly in Gaza City and make extensive efforts to avoid harming civilians.” However, some Palestinians who followed the evacuation warnings and fled their homes in search of safety suffered the very fate they were running from: Israeli airstrikes killed them outside of the evacuation zone. The killings underscore the reality that evacuation zones and warning alerts from the Israeli military haven’t guaranteed safety for civilians in the densely populated Gaza Strip, where Palestinians have no safe place to escape Israeli bombs.

Boycott. Please remember to boycott. Focus on these three. You can make a difference.
Edit: See this link for more on what to boycott from BDS. And here as well.

Codetober Day #30
30. Do you feel you've improved over the last month?
A little bit? Weirdly enough I actually haven't been doing all that much coding outside of work, but because of all the coding I have to do at work, I've improved a bit in my understanding of C#. The main improvement I've seen in doing this is building up the drive to be consistent. Just like the 100 stream challenge for the year and the thirty day vlog challenge I did on TikTok (ninja_tank25 if you're interested), I've been putting myself in situations where I feel a need to complete a task daily. These add structure to my life and help me to get my scatterbrained-ness in check, so in that regard, I think I actually have improved quite a bit.

Codetober Day #29
29. Do you think programming is an art form?
It absolutely can be! I admit to a bit of bias but asking me that question is the same as asking me "are video games art" and my answer to that is "absolutely." The thing is, it looks like a bunch of lines of code on a screen to a lot of people, even people who write the stuff, but we're capable of doing amazing things with it. From mundane details to the wildest transitions you've seen on a web page, ALL of it requires programming to an extent, so I would say, with full confidence, that programming is an art form.

literally every single trait I've seen people call Wyll "boring" for having, are things that others companions have. Like, the favoritism is so transparent it's both pathetic and hilarious

I remember someone asking me on a previous post where I saw the hate for Wyll. Sometimes it isn't hate outright, but it's just different treatment, and it's noticeable here. Theo/Wyll get consistently disrespected and shafted by this community to the point where I almost don't even want to interact with the fandom anymore. You can only see this dude get replaced with non-origin characters in fanart, ignored, mischaracterized (seriously, iI've seen him called boring and even sanctimonious) before you just start hating the people that play this game, and I'm well past my limit. Double points for Astarion fans. I have nothing against the character itself, but his fans are by FAR the most annoying to deal with to me.
Tumblr media
Did y'all see this? 🙃 I highly recommend checking the comments on this tweet for more info, but to summarize the presenter decided to take fan questions instead of letting Theo tell his story about how he landed the role as Wyll. Because they were "short on time".
And like, you're gonna cut off one of the main speakers for some fan questions? If you're out of time then let him speak for the rest of that time, are you serious?? Intentionally targeted or not this feels rancid. The dismissal and exclusion of black characters and entertainers is an ongoing problem in general and is pretty damn rampant in this fandom as is. Awful :(

Codetober Day #28
28. What do you do to focus while programming?
MUSIC! Ever since high school, I've known that I focus way better when I can vibe out to some music while I work. Literally anything is better than working in silence. As for what music, it can change based on my mood really. Sometimes it's metal, sometimes it's rap/hip-hop, other times it's stuff like breakcore, synthwave, or vaporwave. It's all good when it can help you get into the zone.

Codetober Day #27
27.) Do you enjoy the coding community? If not, why?
I've run into some stuff that I'm not fond of. One of the main things I noticed was a fair bit of sexism. I know mentioning that tends to make people roll their eyes, but that's part of the damn problem. I won't go full soapbox here, but anyone that's been to a conference or taken a comp sci class knows how much of a boy's club it can be in the worst possible way. There's a bit of racism too, but as a black man, it seemed way worse to be a woman in STEM than a black man. There's some degree of gatekeeping I've noticed too when someone is involved in the community, but not a particular section or they don't know enough. Finally, we gotta start beating the "socially awkward" accusations. I'm not exactly a social butterfly myself but some of the conversations I've attempted to have, even at my big age of 30+, have been painful. Having all of this information at our disposal and in our heads means fuck all if we don't know how to convey it to others.

Codetober Day #26
26. What are your goals for programming in the next year?
As with every year, I wanna improve, simply to know more this time next year than I do now. As for WHAT I wanna learn, I'm in the air on that. I did say network security would be interesting...but I'd also love to hit that other bullet point on my wish list and participate in a game jam. I think, more than anything though, I'd like to finish something. I'm tired of unfinished projects. I wanna pick something and stick to it. I know I can because I actually did it this year. I challenged myself at the beginning of that year to stream 100 times over the course of the year, and I pulled it off. If I can just focus, I'm sure I can pull it off.

Codetober Day #25
25. Future projects you have planned?
I want to stop starting and not finishing stuff, so I have one that I started that I want to finish, and a moonshot.
1.) A Discord bot that serves as a companion for Pathfinder v2. I already had some functionality finished including a dice roller w/ modifier and allowed users to enter a command to view the basic data of each ancestry/race. Honestly, if I could figure out how to have users save their data some type of way, it'd be pretty neat.
2.) A rhythm based game. Could be short, could even be one song, but I want to finish something by the end of 2024 and it'd put a huge grin on my face to create something within my favorite genre of gaming.
