my lil guys & the way i'm choosing to interpret them

antlers would not be conducive to a subterranean lifestyle, so i'm interpreting them as branched antennae/sensory organs. dusthides with the antlers gene are often nestkeepers- the thicker fur helps to keep eggs and young hatchlings warm in the cool underground, while the 'antlers' allow them to detect small changes indicating dangers or distressed hatchlings.

their bodies are closer to armor-plated badgers or weasels (depending on the individual) than armadillos, but armadillo-like ears help them detect the slightest sound or vibration from the surface above. some individuals have larger or smaller dewclaws, some even appearing to have only the large digging claws. they use these claws for breaking into termite mounds and anthills.

their wings are strong, but too small and their bodies too dense to fly- their wings are more often used to scrape dirt from the sides of tunnels. their tails are flat and somewhat curved, used to scoop out piles or dirt or pack it tightly to strengthen walls or smooth out floors.

ok so this started because, the thing about dusthides is that they have a very cool thing going on with their wing, where the secondary is only visible on the underside of the wing and not the top. unfortunately, only one pose (F) shows this off at all, so I wondered if the M pose could be altered to show the back wing to emphasize that trait. and also i thought it would be cool if the secondary was also on the underside of the plating, which i then had to add more of, and then also i had to draw the F pose to see if i could reposition the tail to show off THAT attribute. and then since i was drawing them ANYWAY i just redesigned some other things. for fun. i dont think i did it super great but it was a fun exercise!!

I can’t explain the love I have for the Dusthide ancients.

I know they aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I absolutely adore them. Not only are they nice and simple, they have some of the most beautiful tertiary genes I’ve ever seen. Veil? Superb. Spores? Excellent. Pachy? My favorite dinosaur. Their simple cute faces just draw me in and make me want to cuddle them…But also bounce them like a basketball.

I literally just transferred to Earth a few days before their release and I will gladly give all the Dusthides that my fellow Earthies are disappointed in a home.

Also they roll up into their ball form when they faint in the Coli? HOW FREAKING CUTE.

I love the little dirt devils.

sandsurges are such a neat shape, look at all those fins. Do you think they kick up a storm any time they wiggle like happy puppies? Do they bury their tails in the sand when relaxing as minor stim? Who knows. I love them though. Still not sure how fishbone gene works logically but mmmmmmmmm porcupine.

Another com from my pop-up, playing around with this specific loose style to mmmmaybe start offering stable coms for this style? we'll see though! I find it fun to play around with shapes a bit more.

⚠️ ICYMI: Scheduled Maintenance ⚠️

There's a scheduled maintenance starting at 09:00 server time today, Wednesday April 17.

This is an open-ended, curtains-down maintenance as we prepare the site for the release of our next Ancient Breed dragon!

I think they stated quite a long time ago that we’ll be getting an ancient for every element before we get neutrals, but very much hoping when that day finally comes it’s swiftwings!

HEY. What if the new ancient IS neutral

and it's an updated swiftwing

and they were born of the early wars between the deities, leading to their natural duty as messengers as they were the only true neutrals.

And they just.... don't wear apparel because back then dragons didn't, so why break that tradition
