The Northman is not a Viking-themed riff or a spin or adaptation of those things on Hamlet, it is an adaptation of the original medieval Scandinavian legend upon which Shakespeare loosely based the play.

That said, The Northman does include some of the common tropes I most dislike in productions of Hamlet:

Leading man is cast twenty years older than his love interest and nine years younger than his mother.

Oedipal shit involving said mother kissing him on the mouth.

Also he's butch and impressive and fights good. (In the context of The Northman that's legit, but I don't like it in Hamlet.)

My production design class this semester required us to take a piece of literary media and reimagine it over the course of the entire class, so I decided to take Hamlet and put it in space! I had a lot of fun, especially with the character and environment designs. We needed to come up with three distinct art styles and choose one to stick with the whole semester, and I was very inspired by David Roberts's illustrations for the "Tales of Terror" trilogy, which you could definitely see more of in the development and concept art for this project, before the art style took on a bit more influence from my own style. I'm really proud of everything I did here! Not everything I did for the class is in here but this is the stuff I was most happy with :) I'd love to get some thoughts and feedback!
