November Closing Post & Announcement

The "Mourning Loss, Honoring Life" challenge is now closed.

We would like to take this opportunity thank all of the talented artists and writers who have taken part in this challenge over the last several months. We appreciate each and every one of you, and your contributions. We love you, CK fam!

That being said, we regret to announce that there will be no challenge for the month of December. Due to low participation and a combination of other factors, the AVSC will be going on indefinite hiatus. If there is sufficient interest, we might consider retooling it and bringing it back sometime after the start of the year.

In the meantime, feel free to consider this an Amnesty Month. The previous months' prompts are linked below. Check them out, and if you would like to submit a fill for one of them, tag us @allvalleyskillschallenge and one of our mods will be happy to reblog your work. As always, fanworks of all mediums, pairings, lengths, and ratings are accepted.

November Challenge - Reminder

November is halfway over! This month, we're celebrating the CK universe's dearly departed loved ones with the 'Mourning Loss and Honoring Life Challenge'. This is a reminder that there are only two weeks remaining to submit your entries.

For this month's inspiration, our mods have assembled a set of moodboards that depict various Festivals of the Dead from some of the cultures featured throughout the series. You can find them here, along with links to the AVSC rules and FAQ.

All submissions are due by November 29th at noon, CST. We accept fanworks of all mediums, pairings, lengths, and ratings. We look forward to seeing your interpretations of the theme!

November: Loss & Life

From the cooling weather to the turning colors of the leaves, Autumn is a time of transformation and reflection. Of mourning and celebration. It's a bittersweet season; the falling leaves remind us that in the sorrow loss, there is also great beauty in letting go.

Accordingly, the All Valley Skills Challenge theme for November is:

Below, you will find this month's prompts. Our mods have created a series of moodboards, each inspired by a Festival of the Dead from a culture represented in the Karate Kid and Cobra Kai universe. We've also included a short description of the unique traditions of each:

Dia de los Difuntos - Ecuador Celebrated on November the 2nd, and coinciding with All Souls Day, Ecuador's Dia de los Difuntos (Day of the Deceased) is a holiday that combines Catholic tradition with the death rituals of the indigenous Quechua people. On this day, families gather to honor and celebrate the lives of loved ones who have passed away. Traditionally, they visit cemeteries to clean graves and to bring gifts of flowers and food to share with those they've lost. The belief is that the food will help give souls strength for their journey to the afterlife. Stalls selling guaguas de pan (bread babies - a sweet bread piped with colorful icing, shaped to resemble a doll or baby) and colada morada (a thick, dark purple corn drink, served hot) line the streets, along with vendors selling other treats and grave decorations. In rural areas, it is common for families to dress in their finest clothes and share a picnic together in the cemetery. The festivities also often include carnivals and parades.

Kyu-Bon (Obon) - Okinawa/Japan The Obon Festival, also called Kyu-Bon in Okinawa, is celebrated throughout both Okinawa and Japan. While the holiday is based on the solar calendar in mainland Japan, in Okinawa, it follows the lunar calendar. This means it can fall anywhere from mid-July to early September. Always starting on a Monday, the celebration lasts for three days. It is customary for Okinawans from all over to Japan to return to their hometowns, in order to observe the holiday with their families. On the first day (Unke), families hang glowing lanterns outside and leave their doors and windows open, to guide and welcome the spirits of their ancestors home. They also leave offerings such as sugarcane sticks and uchikabi paper (money for the afterlife) on the family altar. On the second day (Nakanuhi), families prepare food, visit other relatives homes, and exchange gifts. The final day (Ukui), is a time for feasting, celebrating, and sharing stories. Prayers and goodbyes are said before sending the spirits back to the afterlife. Food, handwritten notes, and uchikabi paper are placed in a large bowl as a gift for the ancestors. The contents are then burned, so the spirits can take the offerings with them when they go. Over the course of the festival, colorfully clad Eisa dancers march through the streets, entertaining both the crowds and the spirits by dancing, chanting, drumming, and playing folk songs on the sanshin.

Chuseok - South Korea Celebrated on the full moon of the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar for about a 3 day holiday. People return home bearing gifts, visit and clean grave sites, and share a feast. Parts of these feasts include songpyeon (a type of colorful rice cake), types of Hangwa like the honey cookie yakgwa, fruit, baekju (a type of alcohol), jeon (savory pancakes), japchae, bulgogi and more. Food will also be set out at a in-home memorial for the ancestors and those who've passed. Games are played like Yut Nori, as well as sports like Ssireum (a type of wrestling), and Taekkyon (a type of martial arts). There is also a dance, Ganggangsullae.

All Souls Day (Il Giorno Dei Morti) - Italy Also coinciding with All Souls Day, Il Giorno Dei Morti is the Italian Day of the Dead. While November 1st (All Saints Day) is the day to honor the Catholic saints, November 2nd is reserved for honoring dearly departed loved ones. On this day, families flock to cemeteries in order to pay their respects to the dead by lighting candles and laying flowers - customarily, bouquets of chrysanthemums - on their graves. In Sicily and other parts of southern Italy, parents will hide small gifts, such as toys, sweets and Pupi ri Zuccaru (sugar puppets) around the house for their children to find. The children are then told that the gifts were left for them by their deceased relatives, who came to visit them in the night. Traditional foods vary from region to region. Pan dei morti (bread of the dead) is consumed in almost every part of the country. Other treats include Frutta di Martorana (marzipan sweets from Sicily), and Ossa dei morti (bones of the dead - crunchy, almond-flavored cookies that are shaped to resemble bones.)

You will have one month from today to create and submit fanworks inspired by this theme. This is your chance to show off your creative skills, whatever they may be. From writing, to art, to everything in between. Our goal is to encourage all forms of creative expression within the TKK/CK community. All pairings and ratings are welcome.

Here's a moodboard I made for the @allvalleyskillschallenge. There was supposed to be a story that went with it, but life (a.k.a. my parents and their tiny, hollow bones) once again got in the way. I'd hoped maybe I could at least get the first chapter posted before Halloween, but it was sadly not meant to be. But I thought I'd at least share this, and a brief summary/preview of the story.

When six-year-old Robby begs his dad to take him Trick or Treating, Johnny has to scramble to come up with a plan. Having recently been laid off from his construction job and struggling to make ends meet, he realizes he can't afford the Ninja Turtle costume that Robby really wants. So he's forced to get creative. After spending a whole day DIY-ing him a costume, Johnny makes use of his rich kid past and takes Robby trick or treating in his old stomping grounds in the Hills. By the end of the night, Robby has a pail overflowing with full-sized candy bars and Johnny has a tired, happy kid. They're just about to call it an evening, when Robby sees a cool TMNT-themed jack-o-lantern on a porch, and begs his dad to ring one, last doorbell...

(AU where Shannon ran off much earlier, leaving a struggling Johnny to raise Robby on his own. Pre-Lawrusso.

I really love the idea of this story, so hopefully I'll get it written when things calm down. Until then, I hope everyone has a Happy Halloween!!

Poker Face-themed YasMoon moodboard I made to go with this drabble I wrote a while back!!! I actually made this months ago, but decided to post it this month since it's kinda themed around the S1 Halloween dance, and it fits this month's allvalleyskills prompt surprisingly well???

I've talked about it a little on my other posts, but Yasmine seems to have this detached, apathetic persona in S1. The only feeling she shows openly (prior to 1x09, anyways) is this snide contempt that kinda says "I'm so above all these ridiculous people that they're not worth a single ounce of my emotional energy". Basically the only time all season that we see her start to let her walls down a bit--and the only time she seems genuinely happy--is in the weed-smoking scene in Moon's car. And even then, her Catty Armor is back on immediately after Sam gets in the car! So we know she can let her authentic self out around Moon, but she can also crush it back down at a moment's notice to maintain her Coldhearted Ice Queen image.

I feel like this kind of up-and-down of being warm and sweet and unfiltered around Moon and cruel and ruthless around everyone else would eventually drive Moon crazy, like!!! Moon can't even get Yasmine's walls down herself sometimes, and so much of the time, she has no idea what Yasmine she's going to get: Her loyal, funny best friend, or the controlling queen bee who acts like she only keeps Moon around to maintain appearances.

And then when I layer in my headcanon that they were privately screwing around in S1, well. You can imagine things would get hairy. Poor Moon is down bad--she would do anything to prove herself to Yasmine, and she would follow her girlfriend best friend anywhere. She'd do anything Yasmine says, no matter how vile. And perhaps worst of all, Moon knows that Yasmine can be sweet. Can be an utter delight, even. But she never quite knows if Yasmine's being sincere, or if she's just yanking Moon's feelings around because she can. And Moon can't help but wonder if this whole confusing thing they have is, well...

Just a trick.

Meanwhile Yasmine really does care about Moon--probably more than anyone--but she absolutely will never admit this aloud because EWWWWW ADMITTING YOU GIVE A SHIT ABOUT PEOPLE IS EMBARRASSING SHE WOULD NEVER jalshdkbdfugjku

Also, just a reiteration of what I was rambling about in my OG drabble, but these girls were being outrageously fruity at the S1 Halloween dance??? Like neither of them visibly have a date, despite being popular and conventionally attractive enough to easily get one Sam's going with Kyler, so no logical reason why the alpha bitch and beta bitch of the school wouldn't have hot jocks on their arms. And in the background of some of the Sam-Kyler scenes, they are dancing??? MUCH closer together than they need to be??? Like is this really necessary???

I think so because they're horny lmao these poor home of sexuals cannot control their burning sapphic desire if they tried

And to again paraphrase from my OG drabble post: ANYWAYS I can totally imagine these two sapphic-ass Laker girls jamming out to Poker Face and Moon being like “wait a minute, why is Yasmine singing so passionately about playing with people’s hearts? And why am I hard relating to Lady Gaga’s many jilted lovers??? ...should I be concerned?”

BTW S1 YasMoon gives off huuuuge toxic codependent vibes, and that's what makes it FASCINATING <3 I love fucked up little dynamics!!! I devour them like junk food!!! Don't mind me, I'll be over here doing needlessly deep character studies on S1 Yasmine in all of her awfulness <3 <3 <3

Actually really like how this moodboard came out! I was going for kind of a grungy rave vibe, and accidentally made it very Bisexual Lighting heavy XD But I feel like that's thematically appropriate! And what can I say? The girls always look good in purple and pink <3

Silence hung heavy between them. Eventually, Bobby let his hand drop and picked up the bowl and brush again, getting to work on the right side of Dutch’s head. The next time he glanced at the mirrors he saw a trio of Dutch’s watching him, an inscrutable expression on their faces.

“Don’t know why you’re so keen to get away anyway. You running from something, Brown?”

“No”, Bobby replied a little too quickly. “Look, just – just forget I said anything, man.”

So one of the moodboards for this prompt (the lovely jazzy one done by Amymone) made me think of a teenager's bedroom in the 1980's with all the stuff on the board kinda just scattered around and that got me thinking of the pre-semester rituals the cobras would do at home a few days before school starts. I found myself thinking that Dutch would definitely have his hair dyed a few days before, but who would help him with it? And thus, a fic was born.

Showing up to the first day of classes at university hung over and a little drunk is never a good idea, especially when the assignment is a sappy write a letter project. Which is all fine and dandy since Johnny has a lot of messy feelings to get out, the issue though is he didn’t quite pay attention and his professor sent his letter.
