savvea:
“Oh shit–” Jesus, they’d told him it was mostly empty around the place, he almost had a heart attack. In what world did a little woman pacing around was a synonym for empty? ( and a child or something, was that a kid? )
“My bad,” he blurted, “didn’t think anyone would be here. I kinda like to, uh… read when I’m alone y’know so I thought it might as well do the trick— is that–” a finger pointing to the sleeping little figure, and then his brow furrowed.
“Who are you?”
Tumblr media
Michelle couldn’t help but smirk. This interruption would at least keep her from worrying herself to death, she figured.
Tumblr media
“I’m Michelle,” she said dryly. “Michelle Park. I’m uh, an unmatched ranger. And this,” she said, gesturing towards the sleeping boy, “is Trevor, my son.”
She paused, then: “Please don’t wake him up.”

Michelle was pacing up and down the room. Ugh. It wasn’t fun at all. Jude was out there, he could be hurt. Or maybe even worse, he could be having a bad time with his partner, She had almost sent him a text, not realizing at first where he was.
Trevor was asleep, and Michelle hadn’t bothered to wake him up. The heavy sleeping he got from his father, she thought. After all, it would be better if he wasn’t alarmed, she figured. She paused then, sensing someone else in the room, and turned around.
“Oh,” she said, blinking, “Hi.”

“Aw, I’m sure you’ll get along eventually,” Michelle said, trying to be optimistic for both their sakes. Either way, partnerships that weren’t beneficial were pretty rare. The people that did the pairing did their job well, at least from Michelle’s perspective. But maybe that was easier for her to say since she had never been a part of it.
Tumblr media
“Not yet, I haven’t even sparred with many people,” Michelle said. “I asked for extra time so I could help Trevor adjust. It’s weird, you know? I mean, I’m adjusting too. Like wow, soon enough I’m going to be punching kaiju in the face...”
“Yeah. I guess.” Over a few years, he’d gone from humoring Michelle to relying on the cards a little bit, but it’d been a while since she’d actually read his to him. Taking care of himself seemed to come up often, but only seemed to nag at him. He barely knew what taking care of himself entailed nowadays.
He pressed his half-empty coffee close to his chest, and shrugged. “I have to work with people, yeah. I didn’t tell you yet, but they put me with this guy who I barely know, and he seems like a total dick – I mean, seems like one.” Then again, he’d had similar feelings before. Best not to revisit that quite yet, especially when he realized he’d been talking about himself a bit too long for his own comfort. “Did they put you with anyone yet? I mean, God, how are you?”

1,2,3, 13, 19, 23,24
1- Michelle’s dreams are vivid and complex, and often recurring. However, it is hard for her to remember the details, which frustrates her.
2- Michelle has a weakness for starches, and more often than not she’ll dig out some old ramen and heat that up.
3. Not too long ago! Like a week or so, tops.
13. Michelle has two siblings, Vivian and Melanie. Vivian has always looked down on Michelle as something of a trouble maker, and Melanie was always treating Michelle like a baby or ignoring her entirely. They haven’t spoken regularly since Michelle moved out of the house at eighteen.
19. Since she had a kid of her own, Michelle has taught herself how to cook, and she’s pretty good at it. When cooking for someone else she’ll opt for something simple, like spaghetti and meatballs.
23. Michelle is asian, bisexual, and a teenage mother. Being a part of these minorities has left a profound impact on her life, giving Michelle a sense of justice but also something of a chip on her shoulder around certain people.
24. Michelle was raised in an agnostic household that frowned upon anything too religious, and eventually she became more spiritual, learning how to read tarot and dabbling with other spiritual practices.

“I wasn’t that bad last time,” Michelle said, grinning. “And I’m always getting better.” A  part of Michelle was glad that they were both there at the same time. A familiar face made things much easier for Michelle and Trevor. But at the same time Michelle knew it was hard for Jude.
Michelle sighed and shuffled the deck for a bit, pulling out three cards. “The Hanged Man, Three of Cups, and Temperance.”
Michelle paused, looking briefly down at the cards before she formulated her response. “So like, obviously in the past there’s been a lot of change? Not always for the better. But now you’re starting to interact and work together with people, which is really necessary at this juncture. But also, like, you should try to not worry? And like, self-care. Do that.”
Jude gotten back into the habit of killing time in the rec room before he fell asleep, drinking coffee, watching the news. This was what he’d done before, and it had a certain familiarity to it, that was just maybe a little sad. It only reminded him he hadn’t meant to revisit this place, but, here he was. (In the company of friends, but still.)
Tumblr media
“Yeah. Have you gotten any better at it since last time?” He pulled a grin as soon as he saw her, unsurprised she was there, too. “Then again, you don’t have to predict any matches.”

“You’re welcome,” Michelle said with a smile. It was nice, really. This seemed to have made Susi a bit happier, a bit more hopeful. And really, with the kaiju attacking again, was there much more you could ask for?
“When I was fourteen, I think?” Michell said, tilting her head a bit to the side. “It drove my parents crazy, they thought I was going to get abducted by a cult or something.”
“Oh,” well, she’ll be thinking about it for a while, but she hopes work was enough to distract her from all this— it would be, she was sure of it. “Thanks for the heads up, Michelle. And actually, thank you for this.”
Tumblr media
She couldn’t really think of something else to ask, only things not linked to her, but at the woman sitting in front of her.
“When did you start reading cards?”

Spurned by her family and her then-boyfriend, Michelle channeled her energy into caring for her son Trevor and into learning Taekwondo and other martial arts.
After working briefly as a professional martial arts teacher, Michelle was recruited to the Jaeger Program, where she hopes to carve a better future for her son and those she cares about.

Michelle nodded, and placed the three cards back in the deck. She then shuffled it and picked out one card from the top.
Tumblr media
“Hmmm...ace of cups,” Michelle said. “That could be like...establishing a bond, getting to know each other well, stuff like that. I know it’s general, but honestly I think you should just let it happen, you know? None of this is going to happen if you obsess too much about it.”
Well. Maybe it was. She’d probably fail to see the romance at first, which made her laugh and squirm in her spot, her cheeks becoming red. A bit embarrassing, but Susi was a hopeless romantic. She couldn’t help it.
Tumblr media
“I think I’d rather have something more romantic. Flowers, a walk on the beach, nothing too fancy, the whole thing, you know? But, it’s whatever, that’s just me.
Please do ask more! I want to know, you can’t keep me in suspense, I’m excited.”

Michelle can’t help but smile a little at Susi’s new enthusiasm. It was easy to be jaded, especially here, and Michelle couldn’t say she wasn’t victim to that. Michelle used to be the kind of person who, deep down, believed in some concept of soulmates, even when she was old enough that her peers would have scoffed at the notion.
That had changed long ago. Romantic love, Michelle thought, was wonderful, but it were also a matter of everything lining up just right at the same time. Then there was the love she felt for her son, which Michelle was sure could transcend anything.
“I don’t know,” Michelle said, shrugging. “You rescue someone from the brink of death, that’s pretty romantic right?”
Tumblr media
“Well, the cards aren’t really saying much else besides that you’ll fall in love,” Michelle said. “I could try to ask more, though.”
If you had asked her years before if she believed in that she would have answered, immediately and without a doubt, yes. The more she grew, well.
Although something about the way she speaks sparks a tiny flame of hope within her. Wouldn’t that be pretty? Falling in love?
Susana gently pushes the magazines away, leaning closer to watch the details on the cards. Habits are hard to forget that easily, and she wants to know more about it, a thousand questions at the tip of her tongue.
“I— well, I hope so.”
Tumblr media
“I rarely have time to meet new people unless they’re hurt or dying, doubt that’s a good way to get to know someone, no? Anything else you can tell me about this? Oh! And I’m Susana, by the way, but you can call me Susi. ”

Michelle nodded and gave a small smile to to the woman. She didn’t look overtly threatening, which was a nice change of pace. Michelle stole a quick glance at the magazines, hopefully not enough to be noticed.
“I’m Michelle,” she said evenly, looking back down at her cards and beginning to shuffle them.
Tumblr media
“Hmm,” she said, selecting three cards from the top of the shuffled deck. “The Lovers, Two of Cups, and Nine of Cups....yeah, it looks like you’re going to fall in love some time.”
She could have been doing much more than just sitting around and catching up on the news, on the latest number of some ridiculous magazine on clothes she’d bought only on a whim; what could she say? Some of the skirts were pretty.
But there she was, finding a good spot to move—  away from the person laughing a bit too loudly for her taste, and further into the room, a spare spot next to a window, oh! Perfect. It had a great view.
“Sorry?”
A reading? Huh. She hadn’t had one of those in ages.
“Uhm. Sure. Why not, right? It’s not like I have anything else to do.” Not at the moment, at least.

Michelle couldn’t sleep. She’d managed to get Trevor to sleep at a reasonable hour, ball of energy that he was. So she stayed in the rec room, which had more people in it that she would have thought. All she had to entertain herself was her tarot deck, which she shuffled idly.
A part of Michelle expected to be more excited than she was. This was it. This was all she’d been training for. Had it not sunken in yet? Or was she just disappointed? Whatever it was, she couldn’t seem to understand what it was.
Michelle’s train of thought was interrupted as someone approached.
Tumblr media
“Want a reading?” she said, half-joking.
