Aloe Free Holiday Survival Guide

Traveling or visiting relatives during the holiday season can bring up a whole host of dilemmas when you’re allergic to aloe vera. You can’t use just any soap to wash your hands and you might feel uncomfortable explaining why you can’t accept the gorgeous Spa Day gift basket Aunt Sally spent hours putting together for you. You also can’t stroll into a holiday party and carelessly freshen up with your friends in the bathroom. Aloe is lurking in every garland decorated corner so now is the time to be extra vigilant about what you put on your skin.

Dilemma:

Solution:

Bring Your Own!

People might think I’m weird, but you have got to do what you have got to do. Pack a pump soap and/or bar of soap to wash your hands with in the guest bathroom. You can’t expect distant family members to swap out their existing household products for aloe free ones, unless they are privy to your allergy or it’s very severe. You have to wash your hands so don’t be shy about using your personal soap.

Dilemma:

sweating in a rush to catch your flight and can’t borrow your friend’s wipes to clean up

Solution:

Bring your own!

When you need to freshen up but can’t risk an allergic reaction, have wipes handy to wipe your brow, underarms or “down there.” I recommend baby wipes because they are gentle, effective and serve double duty if you have a baby on board.

Dilemma:

Running out of diapers

Solution:

have enough, do your research

Bring as many aloe free diapers and wipes as you can, but do your research in advance to see what stores at your destination carry the brands you use. If you know you’ll be near Target, for instance, they carry Water Wipes. Know the stores (and their hours!) before you go, so you’re not left to ask that clueless cousin to grab baby supplies that might have aloe.

No One realizes Or Remembers you’re allergic to aloe

Solution:

Tell them

Everyone closest to you should be aware of your allergy, but it’s important you tell the rest of the family and friends. If people keep offering lotion, aloe infused socks or hand sanitizer feel free to make an announcement.

“As I mentioned before, I am very allergic to aloe vera. When I have contact with aloe vera I -insert reaction here-. I would appreciate if you could stop offering me products with aloe in them or let me read the ingredients before accepting.”

Solution:

Only the aloe free kind
