Why do we not sell and ship our cacao outside Hawaii? Nobody is willing to pay what it truly costs. Cheap beans (and chocolates) most likely involve exploitation of its farmers. And I'm Hawaii...it is all fair trade. Thank you @chocolategarage ・・・ Episode 3 “The Chocolate Garage: In Hawaii” is live! Link in bio, we are so delighted to have finished the next one in our series exploring Happy Chocolate all over the world, this time in Hawaii! Here is a one minute snippet, summarizing some of the learnings and showing you all the folks we interviewed and learned from. Can we look to Hawaii to test out models that can allow everyone to thrive, the farmers, the customers and the earth? In this episode we explore a few models in Maui, on the Big Island and on Oahu. We speak with Charlie and Paul Reppun who have been farming many traditional plants as well as cacao. We chat with Dylan and Tamara of @manoachocolate, we visit with Ward Kashiwa and Seneca of @lonohana, we hear about an agroforestry project underway on Maui, called Maui Ku’ia Estate Chocolate that Dan O’Doherty of @cacao4hawaii has been instrumental in designing with Gunars Valkirs. We also chat with Tom Menezes of @hawaiiancrownhilo who has been farming cacao for over thirty years, and who brings us his thoughts about the future of cacao and chocolate. There is a lot of truth in this episode, and beautiful examples of whole hearted living. Can we keep in mind the fragility of our ecosystems and the thoughtfulness needed to start living with our land in a more “sustainable”, or better yet, regenerative way! My trip to Hawaii to discover all the happy cacao and happy chocolate being made leaves me hopeful.
