alright i am sick of yt to mp4 sites being shady and full of viruses and finding websites that seem to be working and then don't work (looking at you y232 (no hate, just frustrated))

so HERE'S HOW YOU DOWNLOAD YOUTUBE VIDEOS WITH VLC!! VLC FREAKIN RULES!!

get your youtube link

open vlc, go to media > open network stream

paste your url in the box and PRESS PLAY!

wait for the video to open then go to tools > codec information

copy the entire file location (click the box, then ctrl-a to select all, then ctrl-c to copy)

paste into your browser of choice (i use firefox)

right click video and press "save video as", choose your file format if you want

DONE! NO VIRUSES OR SKETCHY STUFF!

Opinions on writing accents in dialogue? It kinda bugs me to see people trying to write more,, pronounced (i guess? not exactly what i mean but i hope it gets the point across) accents like Medic's, Scout's, and Spy's (like replacing the beginning th's in words with z's/zh's for example, or replacing t's and th's in words like better and another with d's for Scout), because it tends to break immersion and just generally like. Feel weird? I'm not really sure how to describe it, but people know those characters have accents! You don't have to write it out.

BUT on the same token I don't tend to mind/notice when people write out Engie's drawl, but that may because it's a little less disruptive to the flow of things? (Usually I just see people dropping the ending g in -ing words) It does also just,, feels Less Weird? Like when people try to write the accents really hard for a character it almost feels like they're reducing them to a stereotype I suppose. I think maybe it just happens less to Engie? (and Scout tbh?) But you have some pretty good takes on other issues within the fandom, and while I don't think this is a major issue anymore (aside from Medic perpetually suffering the occasional w/v switch), I'm curious to see what thoughts you have on it, if any

Oh, I love this topic. I actually talked about this a lot, but I guess it's time to finally make a proper post that actually covers everything I think about accents. Buckle up!

The definition of an "accent" bugs me.

On one hand, I like this definition because it clearly defines that an accent is country or region-dependent most of the time. On the other hand, I think it's lacking in the way that it only includes pronunciation, which is only one of the many aspects in which an accent can manifest.

I'm going to give it my own definition, but first let me list some of the "subcategories" of an accent. I'm going to give them my own definitions which might not be entirely correct, but hopefully they'll get my point across, and anyone who has more knowledge on the subject is welcome to correct me.

(Contrary to popular belief, it's not only foreigners / ESL (English as a Second Language) speakers who can have an accent. Some traits are common between them, while others are unique. It's hard to separate them into a concise numbered list, but I'll try my best.)

Structure. ESL speakers make grammar mistakes such as wrong word order or incorrect verb conjugation accidentally, while native speakers may do it on purpose because it's just easier or more comfortable to say.

Colloquialisms. Native speakers use region-specific words that aren't recognized in other parts of the English-speaking world and are unique to the area they come from.

Dialects. Similar to colloquialisms, but in this case, the words are recognized all over the world, but the pronunciation is region-specific.

Consistent phonetic inaccuracies. Something ESL speakers do a lot, simply because their native languages don't share the same phonetic alphabets. The word is universal and the pronunciation is right, but one or more sounds are consistently incorrect. Can occur in native speakers too - think, like, in a person with a lisp, or someone from an extremely specific area where the phonetic shift is considered normality - note that it becomes a dialectism when it only occurs in a set of specific words though.

Intonation. Characteristics such as whether a person speaks slowly or quickly, where they place their accents (as in stressed words and syllables), and other quirks.

(As a side-note, accent isn't an English-exclusive phenomenon, but that's what we're covering here, so forgive me for exclusive language.)

By that logic, an accent is a combination of unconventional grammatic structures, colloquialisms, dialectisms, consistent phonetic inaccuracies, and intonations that form a distinctive way of speaking a language.

Now, the reason I'm telling you this is because I believe that to be the reason why some spelled-out accents seem fine to us while others are annoying and hard to read.

Structural unconventionalities, when done correctly, read natural and perfectly fitting, which is why I personally always include them and advise everyone to try to do it too.

Colloquialisms are the easiest to get right when you're familiar with the character or the area they're from. They're most often referred to as "slang", so that may be why. Slang is easy to look up, too.

Now here's where the divide happens. I'll go into details for each merc below, but basically what Medic and Scout do are phonetical inaccuracies (specifically replacing W with V, TH with Z or D, etc), while what Engie and Demo do is a dialect. One comes from phonetic barrier (Medic) or phonetic shift (Scout), while the other is simply a natural outcome of area-bound language evolution, and is not strictly alphabet-dependent.

This is why it feels different! It's a different level of semantics! Sounds are lower on the list than words because that's how it is in language-building. You start with sounds, then words, then sentences. It's like. I dunno. Sounds are the ones and zeroes, then words are programming languages, and sentence structure is like using an app, if you want to get all technical-like. Well, you can mess with the programming language, but you shouldn't mess with ones and zeroes, is what I'm saying.

Sorry if it's a bad allegory. It's really hard to explain.

(Bear in mind that this is still just my theory, I am NOT an expert on the subject and I am open to correction and critique. Do NOT take my word for any of it - do your own research as well!)

Intonations are mostly described in dialogue tags/clauses and do not factor into this. Unless you count the "-ing" - "-in' " shift as intonation since it mostly occurs when speaking fast. Except in Engie, who speaks slow but with a drawl so he still does it. Honestly, I don't even know, I call it a dialect since it doesn't occur in ESL (unless we do it on purpose), but it might as well be phonetics or just its own thing. Language is a mess, guys.

Now, for each of the mercs.

Scout:

Doesn't use any structurally unique language.

Doesn't, to my knowledge, use any colloquialisms. Or at least all the slang he uses ("knuckleheads", "chucklenuts", "pal", etc.) seems generic to me. Admittedly, I'm not familiar with Boston, nor do I wish to be.

Doesn't use any particular dialectisms, except for the -in' thing. Workin', doin', lookin'.

On, and "buncha" and "lotsa", too.

Does use a very distinct phonetic set though. His vowels are different, his Rs are harder, his THs are what turns "brother" into that vaguely insult-sounding thing in "Meet the Scout" that nobody quite knows how to spell. My advice? Leave it alone.

Soldier:

"Soldier doesn't have an accent-" have you even been listening to me

He doesn't use any particular structure or dialect, but!

Although "army" by definition isn't a region or an area, it's still a moderately secluded community, so yes, military jargon counts as an accent! Him saying "maggot" and "private" and "son" and the like are manifestations of said accent!

Doesn't use any particular phonetics, but, as a side note, those fics where everything he says is in caps? No. Just no.

Pyro:

My expertise ends here.

Demoman:

God, I love him, he's so interesting.

Okay, so, as far as I've read, he doesn't use any particular structures, BUT he is prone to a very... elevated manner of speaking.

It's always nice to see that included in writing, but it's unfortunately extremely rare.

He uses colloquialisms! "Lad", "bloody", "blockhead" (I think?), "mate" (two different areas can have "intersecting" colloquialisms; looking at you, Sniper. Colonialism is why.), etc etc, there's so many! I love them.

He uses dialectisms also! I've made a list, actually. A Demo dictionary, if you will.

AND he has a very unique phonetic set, although thankfully it's something that's impossible to replicate in writing.

Heavy:

There is a reason I have a whole Heavy Weapons Guide on how to write his speech patterns. They're so unique.

No colloquialisms, he's very... considerate with his words. Calls everyone a "baby", but that's more of a Heavy thing, not an area-related thing.

No dialectisms, not to my knowledge.

Few notable phonetic inaccuracies, even less that can be translated to writing, but there's one thing that annoys me to no end, and it's the "ee" instead if "i". Russians do have a tendency to either stretch or shorten all vowels (think not knowing the phonetic difference between "bitch" and "beach" or "shit" and "sheet", I myself occasionally mispronounce them), but it's annoying when spelled out. Just like Medic's Zs and Vs, I wish people wouldn't do it.

Engineer:

Some notable structures! "This here" / "that there" is most notable to me personally. "Ain't nothing" would go here too, I think, since it's a double negative. There are others, they just don't come to my mind at the moment.

MORE GUN.

Lotsa colloquialisms, too! "Shorty", "feller", "jackrabbit", etc etc. Southern stuff, I'm guessing.

And dialects! "Darn", "pardner" (instead of "partner", though arguably could be a colloquialism, who fucking knows), "shoot" (instead of "shit" lol, cute), etc etc.

A lot of vowel-cutting, which I suppose should go into phonetics, although I REALLY want to put them one bullet point higher for the sake of consistency - I'm trying to prove that spelling out everything BUT phonetics is the way to go.

"Y'all'd've" and the like. Again, you know the drill. Probably way better than I do, I'm not even American.

Medic:

No notable structures.

No colloquialisms except for an occasional "Oktoberfest" and just outright German words.

No dialectisms except "Ach" that one time in the comics.

And, well, you know the phonetics. They're just sad, they are. The writers' interpretation of them, I mean.

Sniper:

GRAMMAR STRUCTURES, oh god, this man breaks me.

I haven't yet noticed (or written) anything beyond substituting "doesn't" with "don't", but I really need to go through the comics to take a more thorough look at his patterns, I'm sure there's more there.

Entirely too many colloquialisms. "Bugger", "crikey", "mate", "piker", "wanker", "mongrel", and these are just off the top of my head.

Here - 'ere, your - yer. Some similarities with Demo's dialectisms, actually, but Sniper's are fewer.

"Oi". Not as an expression, but as a phonetic inaccuracy - "snoiper", and the like, nothing else comes to mind right now but there's plenty. Kinda hate it personally, Just like EVERY STRICTLY PHONETIC PHENOMENON ON THIS LIST, oh gosh I hope my explanations make sense.

Spy:

He is so boring.

I got NOTHING except that he randomly peppers French words here and there so people think he's cool.

Rolls his Rs but you can't show that in writing, so that's fine then.

So there you go!

Structures are good, colloquialisms are good, dialectisms vary from good to optional (as in, you don't have to spell every single one of Demo's "don't" as "dunnae" but it looks alright, I suppose), and all phonetic issues are either terrible or outright impossible to transcribe, Engie's drawl notwithstanding.

But then again, this all might just be my terrible take that nobody finds comprehensible. Who knows. Thanks for reading anyway!
