how to describe a loving gaze

⇸ eyes darting all over your face, trying to figure out which part of you they want to set their eyes on the most (it's impossible)

⇸ gazing at you like you're miles away only when you're a few feet away, standing with another person. their stare is hard, intense, but also melting and blank.

⇸ a featherlight touch to your arm with their eyes softly peering up at you. they can't believe that you're allowing them to touch you like this—so innocent, so softly.

bucky wasn't used to having another body around him when he was at home. at work? sure, he had the misfortune of being around people all day but he knew how to handle it. in his personal space? eh, that was still taking some getting used to.

what surprised him the most was the fact that you could fall over anything and nothing. it was a skill, truly.

"whoa," bucky calls as he passes you in the hallway one night. you had bumped your hip into the side table and immediately tilted forward as if you were going to fall. "you have to be careful, sweetheart."

bucky caught you. he almost always did.

"i'm fine, see?" you shrug it off, this was your normal. "i barely even tripped."

yet, somehow, as you step away from bucky and back on your path towards the kitchen you somehow manage to stub your toe right into the wall. you let out a loud curse and grab your foot, which, considering how terrible your balance was, immediately knocked you forward and this time you actually fell face first onto the floor. a hard and loud thud filling the room.

bucky was by your side in a second trying to keep a serious face and hold back laughter. he wrapped his arms around your torso and he lifted you up into a sitting position in one swift motion.

"you okay?" he asks, his eyes checking you for any visible damages. when you nod your head he leans forward and kisses your temple softly, his hand on your back rubbing soft circles. "either i'm going to have to show you how to balance correctly or we're going to have to put you in a bubble."

"probably both," a soft laugh leaves both of your lips.

after a moment, bucky helps you stand and makes sure you're balanced. you confidently take a step forward, but, as it was written in the stars, somehow manage to trip over nothing.

this time you land in his arms and he smiles, thinking to himself that maybe your clumsiness is something he can get used to after all.
