I love when a character wants to be someone's dog so so bad. Dont mean it in a sexual way (although that can also be a part of it) I mean like. Let me be your loyal companion let me stay by your side give me a purpose in exchange for endless unconditional love let me stop being a person love me like it's my only use. Love me like that's the only thing I was made for. As you can tell. I'm normal.
#Alduccio 😍#he's barely a person anyway!!! he's Begalone's property!! 💗💗#I love these two SOOO much I will go insane because of them

Hello!! I saw that you were making posts to help others with HNK.. I hope its ok if I can get advice just to make mineral based OC's in general. My actual question was, what mineral classification system would be best to use to make OC's? Dana or Strunz
Hi!! Thanks for the question!!!
Yeah sure, I'm ready to help for HnK OCs in any way 💪 (except for designs lol!!! I'm kinda bad at that 😅 my dear friend @somethingfromfrosty is waaay better than me at designing Lustrous characters ☝️)
For the Strunz VS Dana classification, I personally prefer the Strunz one as it is the most used in mainland Europe (where I studied and keep studying geology) and it is the simplest one since it is only based on 10 general categories. Also the Mindat revision of 2025 makes it updated to even the last minerals found so I find it very convenient since I deal with niche minerals.
Dana is more complex, but it is more specific and mostly used by USA-based geologists, and probably it fits much better the very complex and plentiful geology of North America. Although unfortunately it has not been revised and updated recently...
So in the end, Strunz or Dana depends on the personal needs and preferences 👍

Omg hii one of ur hnk posts actually inspired one of my hnk oc ezra(phenakite, he changed his name due to lore shenanigains) I implemented how they dont solve in acids as they have a very high sour tolerance (as in toxic waste levels of sour tolerance, gummies are their favourite food :]). But i also have my oc sodalite, I feel like i need more physical stuff to add to their character. idk do you have any facts abt the two gems i can probably implement somehow? Love ur work!
Hi!!! I'm sorry for the very late reply, but life decided to fuck shit up (as it does, smh) and also my main source of mineral info, Mindat, went down for days TT_TT but now it is back and so am I!
I'm so happy i could help you!! Thank you for your trust (and patience, I made you wait huh -_-''), let's try to find good infos!
I'll add also as many pics as possible because I noticed finding good mineral pics is becoming harder and harder, especially on g00gle images that has been FLOODED with AI slop and dr0pshipping fake plastic minerals sold as real...
I'll put all the infos under the cut as usual, since it will be LONG!
first of all, i want to explain the terminology i'll be using because it is difficult and boring.
Formula is the composition of the mineral.
Lustre is the way the mineral looks: it can be adamantine (shiny as diamond), vitreous, dull, earthy, greasy... they're all pretty self-explanatory
Mohs Hardness is a scale from 1 (softer minerals) to 10 (harder minerals) based on the scratch power. Taking your Lustrous as an example, your hardness 8 Phenakite would be able to scratch your hardness 5,5-6 Sodalite; however, the Mohs scale DOES NOT take into consideration how easily a mineral can break; it only measures the scratching power!
Tenacity does take into consideration how does a mineral react to a force. there's different types:
Brittle: the mineral breaks. Most minerals do that Sectile: it can be cut like butter instead of breaking in a trillion pieces; mostly very soft minerals with a low Mohs Scale Indext do that, as well as soft metals Tough: the mineral is badass and just doesn't break. Honestly, they're so few I can't even name you one... Ductile: the mineral can be stretched like a chewing-gum, but just as before, it's SO rare i dont know any mineral who does that... this is mostly a metal stuff
Cleavage: it may sound bad, but it's just the way the mineral breaks when hit! The real definition is "split along planes". THIS is the thing to look at to know if a mineral breaks easily or not. The planes along which the mineral break can be defined in a scale.
Perfect: the mineral WILL break very easily if hit on this plane, and will split in a perfect, smooth line. It could break the whole mineral in many pieces along all the other planes if the hit is good enough Distinct/GoodImperfect/FairPoor/IndistinctNone Observed: no cleavage and no defined planes. the crystal might just chip an angle without much repercussions to the whole mineral.
Specific Gravity is the weight of the mineral related to the weight of water, that is considered 1. The human body has a specific gravity very similiar to water, so also around 1. This means that if a humanoid Lustrous, if it was a human would weight 60kg, but the mineral of the Lustrous has a specific gravity of 3.3, to calculate the weight of the Lustrous you need to do 3.3 x 60 = 198kg! The "usual" mineral is between 2 and 3, but there's minerals that have a specific gravity as high as 7 or 8!! (This is not canon, but wouldnt it be cool if a Lustrous with a higher specific gravity was slower and less agile than a Lustrous with a very low specific gravity?)
Strunz-Mindat (2025) Classification is the way ALL minerals are categorized, based on their chemical formula and other physical properties. It is very important to unite minerals who are related to each other!
IMA–CNMNC Mineral Symbol: the official shortened name (called "symbol") for a mineral, decided by the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (CNMNC) of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA). Useful when you don't want to say the lenghty name of the mineral over and over!
Ok, i'm sorry for the premise. Now that all is explained, let's jump to your minerals!
Sodalite
Formula: Na4(Si3Al3)O12Cl (but in the grey variant, the Na can be partially substituted by K)
Lustre: either vitreous and transparent, or greasy and opaque.
Mohs Hardness: between 5,5 and 6 (the hardness depends specimen by specimen, so this is your decision to take based on what suits it best for the lore or the character!)
Tenacity: brittle
Cleavage: Poor/Indistinct
Specific Gravity: 2,3
Strunz-Mindat (2025) Classification: 9.FB.10: a Silicate (9) non-zeolite Tektosilicate (F), Tektosilicate with additional anions (B)
IMA–CNMNC Mineral Symbol: Sdl
Sodalite is a feldespathoid mineral, related to Nosean, Haüyne and Lazulite. Feldspathoids, like the similiar feldspaths, aren't really "friends" with quartzes; in fact, the minerals are never found together.
Sodalite has a decent hardness and a good resistance to breaking, and is very light-weight; it is not toxic, it doesn't melt in the water, but it reacts to acids. It is very stable and for all these properties (and also for its beauty!) it is commonly used as a gemstone.
Sodalite is fluorescent! Bright red-orange under SW UV light and blue, white, pink, red, yellow under LW UV light.
The most "common" depiction of Sodalite is vitreous and a deep beautiful blue:
Or a dull, opaque blue crust:
But it can be as easily transparent and colourless:
Afghani Sodalite can be grey:
Or many other colours!
Sodalite has a variety called Hackmanite. It comes in colours between pink and bluish-purple and has a peculiar optic property called tenebrescence: it is a kind of reversible photochromism (or: changing colour when exposed to the sunlight). When Hackmanite is exposed to the light its colour fades, but worry not, its not forever! If stored in the dark, it can go back to its original deep colour. When broken (or exposed to UV light) exhibits a deep purple-red colour, but i think (i'm not sure here, the sources are not clear, im sorry) it is also reversable.
And some examples of its tenebrescence:
I yapped a lot, and i don't think i can fit also Phenakite in here, whoops! I hope I helped, and if you (or anyone reading this) has any question or needs more infos, i'm always ready to give more! Sorry for the bad english, it is not my first language.

also, for the record: I DONT USE AI FOR MY RESEARCHES. And neither should you!! Whether they're historical (like for my AZ drawing) or scientific (like for Houseki no Kuni), I searched myself for all my sources, I suffered and searched for days and months and found the best sources I could, and I enjoyed the process.
My geological sources, specifically, are: Mindat (the BEST site for mineral infos and photos), books from the local libraries, the (few free ones 🙄😒) scientific and peer-reviewed papers, and the books I've bought from geology conferences and festivals I've been to irl.
For historical references, I use university-grade books from local libraries, peer-reviewed papers (there are more free ones than the geology ones!), and sources from museums.
Please, please, don't use AI for your resources. AI doesn't know what's a good reference and source and what's not; AI will even make up shit! Please, enjoy the voyage of the research instead of laying on that bag of smelly trash that's AI chatbots. Do your research, be the best person you can be!

hewwo, I'm back to help people to make Houseki no Kuni OCs. I used to do it a few years ago (with the tag #hnk oc help ) and now I'm willing to do it again 💪
So if you want me to explain better a mineral to you, find a mineral with certain properties for your OC creation etc, my 1nb0x is open 👍
