do you ever see someone and think
“wow they got lucky”
the craftsmanship of their bones, their brain, and their body
when i look in the mirror for too long it hurts
they don’t track how many steps it takes to burn off dessert

Number 854636312315 of things I didn’t notice while watching The Sound of Music as a child: the framing of Elsa and Georg’s breakup scene
(Or in other words, I have too much time [and thoughts in my head] and this will turn out to be an unnecessary comparison of the balcony and gazebo scenes)
On the balcony, and after spotting Maria on the terrace, it’s immediately obvious Georg’s thoughts are far, far away from Elsa’s as she rambles on about wedding presents and honeymoon destinations in a bid to distract him as much as herself.
It’s one of the more serious “adult” scenes of the film and it’s interesting that nearly all the great emotional scenes (read Sweepingly Romantic, Angsty, or Downright Dangerous) are shot in dark settings, i.e. the Laendler; Maria’s confession to the Reverend Mother; this breakup scene; Maria and Georg in the gazebo; the Zeller vs. von Trapp confrontation outside the villa; and the subsequent concert and escape from the Nazis.
But, very much like the Baroness, I’m rambling. Back to the balcony scene.
Georg’s face is half in shadow, but we still clearly see the guilt and sadness there (Christopher Plummer played this scene beautifully). He can also barely meet her eye, which is tellingly unusual for the blunt, naval man that he is.

1. When Georg comes running to get in the car after his little moment with Rolf that led to them getting chased, Maria opens the door for him to save time bc she's a good wife like that
2. When he gets in the car and is all frantic to start moving bc they're being chased, her face goes from "im so glad you're ok" to "what- what did you do- what did you say- why are you- fam-" it's perfect i love it
