So I heard you ship Snily, care to share the reasons you love this wonderful pairing?
Warning to followers who don’t like Snily: Skip this
Joyous acclimation to followers who do ship snily: YAY
I ship Snily because I love the devotion and innocence of it.
Snape and Lily’s friendship as children was born out a common love as well as a fear of isolation. Snape was isolated in the muggle world of his father due to what is presented as a less than ideal home life and his knowledge of magic. Petunia isolated Lily with her anger and bitterness (and this grows with Lily and Severus’ friendship). They’re able to confide in each other their hopes and dreams and wishes about a world, that while Severus knows about, he probably hasn’t experienced much of it yet and that Lily is just dying to get to know.
Severus opened the doorway to a brand new world for Lily and she gave him confidence and a friendship that meant more than him to anything. There’s something amazing about a friendship of that level and even when they fall apart the love that was behind that doesn’t go away.
When there’s that level of intimacy there is a deep amount of love, that not always romantic in nature, but always present. While Snape’s love for Lily did have romantic undertones there’s also a very strong respect for Lily and her choices. Snape hates James and that’s clear to see; Snape’s bitterness towards Lily’s husband is evident, but he never disrespects Lily in her intelligence, choices or romantic partners. He never says anything bad about the Potters marriage, romance or relationship - because while he hates James as a person, he loves and respects Lily enough to realize that he didn’t have a chance - he blew his - and that she was capable of making her own choices. (Also this is why when people complain that Snape is a “nice guy” it irritates me. Snape never speaks ill of Lily or her relationship with James even after he lost his friendship with her. He never disrespects her in that way.)
The same would go for Lily. Lily entered the world of magic through Snape’s stories and with his hand guiding her. As long as she lives in that world, she’s going to remember him. While he hurt her, she knows that there was once good in him and I honestly can’t see Lily Evans Potter not believing that there was still love and goodness in him even when she thought the worst of him. He was her best friend and what he said to her was awful; it would have cut to the core. But the love that once existed between them isn’t going to disappear in that moment.
Snape truly loved Lily, first as his friend and then romantically. While relationships may die or disappear the love that was born of them does not. The people we let in have the most ability to hurt us because we gave them the tools to - which is something both Lily and Severus experience in their relationship. But while both of them were hurt by it - the love that was once between them isn’t going to disappear overnight, and in many cases, it never will.
I ship Snily because I refuse to believe that the love they shared could be completely destroyed by one word forever.
