Miranda’s lips curled into a smug grin. "Sa'raen fa'syl na'raen, kael'raen fa'syl thal'arith fa'lan." She raised her hands again, and this time, the pressure in the air thickened—her power coiling around Corinne like a vice.

In a swift movement, Corinne was standing once more and glaring up at the larger woman.

Slowly, Miranda inched closer, and Corinne could smell the overwhelming stench of death on her robes.

Looking past her, she leaned in, her talon clawed fingers curling around her arm when she did.

Corinne’s knuckles whitened as she clenched her cane, her fingers trembling slightly with suppressed rage—or was it anticipation? She continued her descent, her steps slow. With each step, the chandelier lights above began to flicker erratically before shattering, one by one. Shards of glass fell like snowflakes, scattering across the floor as darkness crept in.

The room thickened with a sharp, noticable scent of fury; both Alcina and Bela could feel it pressing in, almost suffocating.

As Corinne passed the candles lining the staircase, their flames quivered as though recoiling from her. Shadows leaped and swayed, leaving the room barely illuminated by the unsteady glow.
