Tammy Rae Carland: Lesbian Beds
Carland’s series of large format photographs, Lesbian Beds, depicts bed sheets recently vacated. Shot from directly above, the images offer lavish views of private spaces. Seizing onto viewers’ voyeuristic impulses, Carland invites them to look, but denies them the opportunity to study the figures to whom the sheets belong, turning rumpled covers into anthropomorphic stand-ins. By withholding a direct view of the subjects themselves, Carland creates portraits that enable empathic projection but elude fixity.

What on earth can you do on this earth but catch at whatever comes near you, with both your hands, until your fingers are broken?

'I have led a toothless life,' he thought. 'A toothless life. I have never bitten into anything. I was waiting. I was reserving myself for laIter on - and I have just noticed that my teeth have gone. What's to be done? Break the shell? That's easily said. Besides - what would remain?A little viscous gum, oozing through the dust and leaving a glistening trail behind it.'
from The Age of Reason, Jean Paul Sartre
