“I’m so sorry.” Helena murmurs earnestly. She wishes she could do more for Lexie, but right now, all she can really do is give the other girl a listening ear. So that’s what she’ll do. “Are you comfortable sharing why you’ve always thought that you deserve bad things?”

“it, um, it started when i was eight.” she begins with a sigh. “my parents had gotten into this giant fight, my dad left, and when he came home, he wasn’t himself, helena.” she pauses, taking a moment to compose herself. “he was yelling at my mom, calling her a cheater, a desperate bitch, and then he..he hit her.” she’s crying now, and she desperately tried to wipe them away.  “i tried to make him stop, to talk him down, but, he came after me. i thought it was a one-time thing, but, it kept happening, whenever he got drunk, told me that it was to make up for how horrible my mom was.”

Helena can’t believe what she’s hearing. “You didn’t solve anything! All you did was give power to the two people who don’t deserve it! you said so yourself, Harry doesn’t care about anyone but himself. And Campbell is scum of the Earth.” Her eyes narrowed. “But, since you’re not interested in being mayor, I guess that means I can tell you to get the hell out of my house without any repercussions. So, get the hell out of my house.”

“alright.” lexie sighed. “i’m leaving. you don’t have to worry about me.” on her way out of the room, she turns, looking back. “if you think being mayor’s so easy, you should try it. i’m pretty sure you’d do a better job than me.”

“the others can handle that.” lexie had come to her in her one moment of weakness, and now that it was over, she was back to her normal, sarcastic self. “It was my problem, and now i solved it. by putting it onto campbell and harry.” she sighs, “being a mayor, is so easy.”

laying on helena’s bed, lexie sighed. “it’s madness out there, hel. granted, i made it into a chaos fest, but, that’s my problem. but, for now, stay with me, please? we can relax, and hang out, i have a ton of disney movies on my phone. and grease. grease is always good.” 

“Lexie, you’re one of the mayors. It’s literally your job to stop this chaos from happening in the first place.” Helena wants to point out that they’re still not quite friends yet, so she doesn’t want to pretend like they are.

"Do you still want this relationship?" Helena asks, voice barely above a whisper. "I know how you feel about us getting married, you made that perfectly clear the other night...But do you still want to be with me at all? Or am I just waiting around like a fool for something that's never going to happen?" (for Luke, obvs)

“of course i still want to be with you!” luke says, practically raising his voice. he loves helena, but they’re rushing into things! they’re still teenagers. besides, even if he wanted to be with her, he’s already done so much to hurt her. so, shouldn’t he get her as far away as possible before he hurts her again? “ i love you, it’s just...” he trails off.

Helena was wearing Luke’s letterman jacket. Given their height difference it was much bigger on her than it was on him, but she liked that. Liked the way it dwarfed her. “I got into Stanford.” She said, unable to keep it to herself any longer.

“hey there, tiny.” luke jokes, seeing helena in his jacket. when he hears her news, he grins. “really? that’s awesome, lena!” without hesitation, he scoops her up, bridal style and spins her around, before placing her down lightly on the ground. “we’ve got to celebrate!”

Do you really believe that you and Helena are rushing into getting married, Luke?

“yes!’ he nods, frantically, “of course i do! we have our entire lives ahead of us, when i proposed, i didn’t mean get married so quickly! i meant, down the line!”

At first, Helena thinks she must have heard him wrong. There’s no way Luke, her Luke, the love of her life, would do something so awful. And yet, when she pinches her arm hard and feels nothing but pain, she knows she’s not dreaming. “I don’t believe this.” She whispers, her tone anguished.

“believe it, hel. it happened. and im so sorry it did. but, it’s in the past now.” he says, sincerely. “it was a while ago, we can move past it.” honestly, it was the past and he moved on. helena could do the same.

No, Helena isn’t sure she wants to know at all. But she does know that she needs to. “Yes. No more secrets, no more lies. Tell me.” She orders. Her face is wet with tears. “I deserve to know.”

“i drugged you. nothing, permanent, just over the counter stuff.” that’s all he can say. he can’t justify his actions,  he fucked up.

“Sure you can, Lexie.” Helena says softly, closing her bible, the highlighter still sticking half out of it. “Have a seat.”

“thanks.” she says, sitting down on the pew, right next to helena. “you know how i told you that i thought i deserved what happened to me? and how you said that i got to that point? that’s not true. i’ve always thought that, ever since i was little.”

luke swallows, words getting caught in his throat. he really didn’t want to tell her. he had already done so much he couldn’t bear to hurt her even more. “do you, really want to know? it’s not pretty, lena.” he cringes.

“a while ago, you heard something in your house. someone, broke in.” luke states. he knew this, he was the cause of it.  “except, i didn’t. campbell, wanted to get back at you, and get elle back, by…by threatening you. he made me go into the house. i took a video of you, sleeping.” his voice catches in his chest. “i….i sent it to elle.”

Helena can’t breathe. She thinks of the terror she’d felt that night, how she’d been so certain she’d heard something, only to convince herself she was just being paranoid. And all this time…”How didn’t I hear you? How didn’t I feel the light of a phone on my face?” She whispers, staring at him with nothing but hurt in her eyes and on her face.

“ can i talk to you for a moment ? “ her voice is strained, almost as if she’s been crying, but lexie tries to hide it.
