“Why did you come here?”

A well-placed question indeed. Hina hummed, a purr in the back of her throat, as she curled her tail around her paws. This must be the Hokage, was he not? According to Neko-obaa, he was the head of Konoha and thus responsible for the workings inside the village. She mused she better strike a polite tone with him to make a positive first impression.

“I am the ninneko Hina, Yondaime-sama. My kin have sent me to visit Fugaku-sama and check up on how the clan is doing.” She flicked one of her ears. “I don’t know how familiar you are with the connection between Uchiha and ninneko, but it is custom to keep in touch. It’s my first time seeking them out directly, so I apologize should I have broken any conventions.”

Within the clan, people insisted that Fugaku had a fine amalgamation of both his parents’ features. He had Sarani’s olive-toned skin and dark brown hair that didn’t fluff up the way Kazusa’s did. In his build, though, he had his mother’s broad shoulders, pouty lower lip, and intense eyes. Standing beside either parent, at least within the clan, people could clearly tell whose son he was.

Would he be able to tell with the cats entire lines and families just by looking at them? Every last fluffy gray cat in the feral colony back home had descended from his mother’s beloved feline friend, but none of them were ninneko. They were just wild and made it hard to sleep when they decided to mate.

“Ah! You must be–” How could she not be? The cat spoke!

“I think Neko-obaa was expecting my mother, but she can’t make it this year. I’m Fugaku: Uchiha Kazusa’s son.” And at the young cat’s curiosity, Fugaku patted the bag upon his back and grinned. “I came to pay my respects and introduce myself as the future Uchiha head. So, yes…three kilos of dried catnip. I didn’t want to come empty-handed.”

Three kilo?! Hina’s eyes grew wide at this dreamlike revelation. Oh, of course she would only get a small part but ... just hearing him say it sent chills down Hina’s spine. Fugaku was the first Uchiha she’d met, and instantly he’d become one of her favorite humans. 

“Welcome to Sora-ku, Fugaku-kun.” She was older than him, right? Was she polite enough? Excitement coiled her gut; she could hardly contain her excitement. “I’ll guide you to neko-obaa. Please, just follow me.” 

The old cat lady was already expecting him--- His mother. Hina didn’t want to let granny wait but, regardless, she hoped to get to talk more to this human once the greetings were over. There was so much she didn’t know and now finally got the chance to inquire about. Did Fugaku-kun know about the covenant? Surely, he must know. But ... did he know the full story? Had the Uchiha conserved their past better than the ninneko had?

“I take it you’ve never been here before?” Casual, Hina. Don’t get ahead of yourself.
