“you’re full of shit.” aiden said with a roll of his eyes. anyone else he’d probably believe, but those damn twins, he didn’t believe any of their shit. “and i’m absolutely not helping you. i’ve never had any desire to ever help you. so thanks but no thanks. have fun with your pile of dino nuggies. i’ll make sure your babysitter is keeping an eye on you.” really, he was shooting himself in the foot here because he loved dino nuggies and pure stubbornness was the only thing stopping him from having them. 

it was amalie’s fault for trying with him. it was no secret that the thorsen siblings were the bane of his existence, although moreso alexei than ami. while she had never actually done anything to earn aiden’s ire, she certainly took every chance she had to get under his skin when her brother wasn’t around to do it. “no? your pride is worth more than these glorious, steaming nuggets? look at all these dipping sauces. you could have a new sauce in every bite.” sure enough, as she picked up one of the nuggets and ripped it in half with a sickeningly-sweet grin, a tiny puff of steam floated from the hot center. “nobody has to know. you could sit and fill your belly and carry on with your life, and the only one who’d know you were here is us. don’t let them go to waste, aidey-poo.”

“ you don’t know that , i always want to be active , one time i got so mad at my mom i walked eight miles in the snow in the middle of texas winter all the way to my pops ranch because i didn’t want to talk to her . if i’m anything it’s stubborn . ” to see her now you’d never know that noah had been smoking since she was a teen but she was coming off a six month break and there was nothing like that first high after a long wait . “ burritos ? ” she said the words suddenly sitting up to look amalie in the eye , “ you’re speaking my love language right now . please feed me shitty taco bell burritos also chips and the plastic cheese . maybe those twists cinnamon things … or the little donut holes . oh my god , just get the whole menu . ”

“i’m the opposite, when i eat, i’m done. i fall asleep within an hour of a big meal, less if i’m tired or it’s dark.” she hummed thoughtfully, keeping noah in view out of the corner of her eye as she navigated the app. “oooh, i am always down for taco bell. have you tried dipping the cinnamon twists in sour cream? it tastes like cinnamon cheesecake, it’s incredible.” ami was adding things to the cart without a care, checking off every item on noah’s list and then some. “i refuse to eat their beans, they’re disgusting. it’s like sawdust that's rehydrated into a goopy paste. so you’re on your own for anything with beans in it.”

“ i’m just honored to even be nominated . ” doing his best award show voice as he rattled off his mock acceptance speech only stopping at the assertion that his dino warrior would lose this battle . “ please my guy has wings . ” he scoffed dipping a finger in ranch before rubbing it on just one side of it’s wings , gotta protect the soft bits . “ and with his armour there’s no way your guy will even be able to hurt him . ” he spent a few more minutes readying his solider for battle , “ best two out of three - ” holding the nugget between his fingers before an idea flashed before his eyes , “ or better yet . we should each make a small army , we can have the battle of the ages , people will tell the story of the fallen nuggies for years to come . ”

“wings? wings are nothing against these scaly spines! how would you attack from the sky with knives on his back?” ami countered, watching with a faux, dramatic look of seriousness on her face. her excitement betrayed her, however, at his suggestion of a full-on dino war, and her face split into a grin. “yes. a war. LETS GO TO WAR!!!” she didn’t care much if her raised voice drew attention, as very few people actually paid amalie much attention. sometimes it was almost like she was invisible, a ghost wandering the streets. it was both a lonely curse and a beautiful, chaotic gift. if people weren’t really looking, they weren’t really seeing. and if nobody saw her, nobody could catch her. she’d been prepared for war for a very long time, and was grateful it had only come in the form of shaped and breaded chicken.

jordan tended to stick to themselves. struggling to make friends but frankly; life was getting a little lonely that way. they figured if there was one way to get along with people? it was the enjoyment of childhood classics. they let out a small chuckle. “damn, i wish they’d get my order wrong if this is the outcome.” they taunted before climbing onto the bench opposite the other. “seems like a pretty tough task if you ask me. but you have to promise not to judge me on my choice of dips.” they mused with a raise of their brow before dipping a nugget into a curry sauce. “i didn’t have a dino feast on my cards for today but… seems like a pretty decent way to spend it. cheers.” jordan held up a dino in a ‘cheers’.

while certainly not always successful, ami was the type of person who would try to make friends with anyone. she wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but she was at least decent at finding common ground. and comfort food was always a good common ground. “well that depends. if you’ve ordered a steak and lobster, it might be a let down. however, i ordered a personal pan pizza and french fries. through a comedy of errors, my pizza ended up facedown on the floor and the fries burnt to a crisp, so instead i got the giant pile of nuggets for the kids meals that expire tomorrow and they wanted to get it gone.” she explained to her companion as she tapped her nugget against theirs before dunking it head-first into the ketchup, quietly mimicing the cries of a dying....animal? creature? deflating balloon? it certainly wasn’t an accurate noise, but it was dramatic nonetheless.

Widening his eyes at the sight o all the dino nuggies, “I think I can help you do that, especially with all those dipping options.” Aaron said with a smile. “This should be easy to do, especially with 2 of us.”

“you’d think, but i’m worried it’ll get old quickly.” ami hummed in thought as she considered her dipping choices. “i once ate the same burger every meal for a week and it was amazing for like two days and then i was done. by the end of the week i was gagging just thinking about it.”

he feels like he hasn’t seen his sister in forever. grabbing two large iced coffee’s and some food ( his vegetarian choice, of course ), he finds himself outside her door, knocking with his foot as his hands are full. “hi,” he tells her, offering her his usual weak, somewhat timid smile, “i bought food. i missed you. can we talk?” he doesn’t really have anything in particular to talk to her about, he just wants to talk to her and hang out.

there was nobody else in the world amalie was happier to see at any moment than her brother. even during their worst fights, alexei was still the most important person in her life. he brought about a peace in her she couldn’t find anywhere else. maybe that peace was her perfectly crafted ice coffee order or maybe it was him, but she needed it right now. she threw the door open wide with a dramatic flourish, her face split in an excited smile. “hey baby bro, of course we can! come on in, i promise there are no scorpions this time.” ami’s grin turned mischevious as she stepped out of the way to let him in.

“yay! i love that you’re in.” grace said with a grin, though she hadn’t doubted it. her and amalie always had each others backs. she raised an eyebrow and her grin widened. “for legal reasons i’m not telling you to bring party favours, but if you wanna sneak them in behind my back…then i won’t know about it. and if you happen to pop a few into my mouth. then i’ll love you forever.” 

amalie let out a small laugh, shooting a quick wink at her friend. “oh don’t worry, babe, you know i’ve got you.” there were very few things for which ami could be reliably counted upon, but an interesting experience would always be one of them. from the latest designer drugs to concerningly authentic-looking fake ids to live animals, there was always something for her to bring to the table. “i’ve been playing with a new mix, i think you’ll like it. low key, but makes you feel incredible.” she was practically beaming with pride, her personal experiments having gone well.

his eyebrows shot up at the stack of nuggets , leaning to the left so he could see her without the tower of dinosaurs in their path , shooting her a wicked gin . “ if there’s one thing i am great at it’s eating . ” taking the nugget from her hand and dunking it in the honey mustard before biting it’s head off , “ i will be the terror of the land before time . ” his evil cackle muffled by the food still in his mouth . if you gave him dino nuggets there was only one thing to do , make them battle each other , picking up two nuggets before reenacting a battle between them , tossing the loser in his mouth before turning the remaining nugget towards her . “ choose your fighter . ”

she let out a soft bark of triumphant laughter as he took the nugget from her. “i knew you were the right person for the job.” ami’s grinned mirrored kaiden’s, and she took another one from a stack, intentionally choosing one from the side instead of the top. “this little guy. look at his spikes. they’re sharp, he’ll rip your guy to shreads.” of course, the spikes in question were soft, rounded, and battered, but they were intact and that was better than the spikes of some of the other similarly shaped nuggets, and therefore it was the superior candidate. “her face grew serious as she and her nugget warrior prepared for battle, with amalie dipping it’s little feet and head in barbeque sauce so it resembled boots and a helmet. “gave him some armour, for extra protection.”

“i think i’d go crazy if there wasn’t sound. i mean, the sound of complete silence is… terrifying. like, when you’re sitting at home without any sound, it’s not truly silent. there’s still some sort of background noise that our ears are just accustomed to and can’t hear it. but absolute silence… i imagine that’s what it would be like to be completely deaf. i wouldn’t wish that on anyone. i personally need at least music, i’d go nuts without it,” she said, playing with the end of her hair. “would it be quicker or slower? if i went to venus right now and spent a hundred earth years there, when i come back to earth would i be 130 and look like i rose from the dead or would i be 130 and still only look 30 because it was only a hundred days on venus? it’d be trippy either way. i wanna go to space some day. i went to nasa a few years ago, they let me do a whole bunch of training practices. my baby daddy was like “you’re supposed to take this seriously, this isn’t a zero gravity acrobatics gym” cause i was doing tricks in the air when they put me in the zero gravity chamber. you should go some day, it was lit. i don’t recommend the air thing though. it’s the one where they have you stand over an air current and you’re being thrust into the air. they almost lost me, i was too light for it.”

“i saw a meme about how prolonged silence can drive a person insane, but it’s a meme, so i’d take that with a grain of salt. or several.” although jillian had a point, music did also keep ami sane when other avenues failed. the girl’s next question was exceptionally fascinating, and amalie had to stop to think about it for a second. “on one hand, i think you’d age faster, since your body would be used to aging in earth’s time. however you’d be further from the sun, and most of the damage caused to our skin is by the sun. that’s why they recommend you wear sunscreen constantly. but if the uv rays were almost non-existent, i imagine you wouldn’t age as severely as you would here.” ami had seen more than her fair share of women who would have paid a fortune to escape so far fro the son’s rays. “that actually sounds really cool, although i’m not sure i’d like the feeling of constantly falling. of course you’d blow away, you’re tiny.” ami had never really been considered short for a girl, standing tall at five foot seven, but jillian couldn’t be much more than five foot even and looked like too many balloons would take her for a ride.

the dino nuggets were stacked so high on the plate that they were barely stable, as if any slight movement of the picnic table would send them tumbling. amalie’s smile was sheepish but unapologetic as she peeled the lids off of the smaller containers off to the side. any and every dipping option you could ever want filled the small, black plastic containers. “okay, don’t judge me, they messed up my order so they gave me the rest of the dino nuggets. they’ll go stale if we don’t eat them soon, so you have been tasked with helping me.” her face and tone suddenly serious, ami held forth a dino nugget. “are you up to it?”

“ do you want to go surfing ? or hiking ? or horseback riding ? ” she’s talking so fast the words all seem to mesh together . “ we could go paddle boarding or swimming or base jumping or fly fishing - ” okay so maybe the second joint wasn’t the best idea . “ we could also eat , i’m so hungry i could eat a whole cow . ”

it was kind of sweet, sometimes, to remember that others didn’t have the tolerance amalie did. she had been smoking since she was a teen, and there was very few mind-altering substances she hadn’t tried. “i think food is a good idea. a great idea. lets eat first, i can promise you won’t want to be active after we eat.” only a few swipes and presses later, uber eats was open on her phone, a world of flavour at her fingertips. “what do we want? burritos? chinese?’

if anyone that wasn’t regularly at the studio saw her laying on the ground, they’d probably think she was insane. but anyone that knew or saw her enough, they’d know she was most likely on the ground because her rollerblades rolled out from under her and she decided to stay on the ground. so there she was. flat on her black, staring up at the sky and probably contemplating why she even bothered to show up to work today. “did you know that an entire day on venus actually takes about a year to pass? it’s because of how the axis is positioned. also, space is completely silent. i dunno how i’d handle that. like, think about it - here on earth, even when everything is ‘quiet’, there’s still some sort of noise we just don’t notice. but in space, that doesn’t exist because there’s no air, so the noise can’t travel. can’t hear a scream, either. it’s wild, man.” @palmwoodstarter​

instead of being concerned, amalie simply folded her legs under her and lowered herself next to jillian’s shoulder, as if that was her natural place in the world. and in truth, sitting crosslegged on the sidewalk talking about space was as natural a place to ami as any. “i didn’t know about venus, but i knew about the lack of sound. something about the soundwaves getting lost in the vacuum or something, i don’t know. clearly not a scholar, here.” she mused softly, lifting each leg to tuck her fingers under her thighs. “i don’t know what would be worse. we’ve all had days that felt like a year on earth, but a full year? in one day? would you age quicker? that would be a nightmare.”

house parties beat club nights every time, in her opinion, so amalie’s smile was lit with excitement at the invite. “oh fuck yes, you know i’m in. i’m always in.” she was already planning her outfit in her mind, the stops she’d need to make after filming to perfect her look. “do you want me to bring anything? chasers? snacks? party favours?” ami wriggled her eyebrows with a playful, knowing smile.

amalie has always enjoyed living in her brother’s shadow. he was the trouble child, the one who caused nothing but problems. alexei was the one everyone watched, he was the one who drew their attention. he was the good boy, the sweet broken baby who needed the extra care. and ami loved her brother even more for it. because as their adopted parents fawned over alexei, ami was left to her own devices, as long as she never got caught.

she learned from a very young age that it was her and alexei against the world. it didn’t have to be, though, and when she was sixteen, ami met and fell in love with a boy she had met at school. two years later, a matter of days after she turned eighteen, they were married. and for a little while, she was the one who mattered. 

{tw: death} they were only married for two years before the worst happened, and six months later she was a widow at the ripe old age of twenty. then it was just her and alexei again. ami never had much independence from her brother until she married, but it was overrated. she seemed to function much better as an extension of him, than a person of her own. every part of her was pulled from others, bits of their personalities combined into one, bright smile. and she was happy like that. as happy as she deserved.

it was alexei’s fault that amalie got cast as an actress on lakedale. she’d been hanging out on set with him and was ‘discovered’. She’d never wanted her face on billboards and her name in the news. She’d wanted to disappear, be a new person each place she travelled to. but alas, she’d do anything for her brother. so now she does. she acts, for her brother. and she’s in this with him until the end. god help anyone who dares get between them, because despite ami’s warm, loving exterior, is a dark heart who’d stop at nothing for her baby brother.
