Destiel Fic Starter Pack

Never watched Supernatural but wondering what all the hype is about? Then this is the post for you. If you have been on tumblr for some time or just from November 5, 2020, you may have seen a gif set or two or a hundred with destiel aka Dean and Castiel from Supernatural. @fandom​ even made a Destiel Is Canon post with short overview of basic facts! Are you interested but have no idea where to start? We know, we know. Life is hectic, 2020 is taxing and Supernatural has too many episodes to watch. 15 seasons and 327 episodes to be precise but who’s counting? Say no more, we got your back, fam!  You don’t need to have ever watched SPN to enjoy the fics on this rec post.

For fans who have never watched SPN, some basic facts - 1x01 starts with Dean Winchester (26 yo) professional monster hunter, picking up his brother Sam (22 yo), student at Stanford, and going on a one off monster hunt. For the next 3 seasons they travel around the country in their black Impala 67 hunting monsters, saving people. Castiel, Angel of the Lord and the multidimensional wavelength of celestial intent, arrives in 4x01.The rest is shipping history. 1. If you want to read fics that are set in Supernatural universe but are not canon specific, your best bet is pre season 4 (our tag) and solo hunter Dean (our tag) fics where young Dean meets Castiel differently from the show, and fics that are very loosely tied to a specific season. And, if you’ll decide to watch the show later, you still won’t be spoiled!

2. If you don’t want to bother with Supernatural canon at all, then you are still in for a treat. With 92,500 fics (December 12, 2020) and counting, destiel is currently the biggest ship on AO3. Destiel fics cover a lot of popular tropes and kinks but some are more popular than others among destiel fans. Angst, miscommunication, exploration of Dean’s low self esteem, Cas’s rusty people skills and general otherness are a staple of AU fics. But also exploration of one’s sexuality - internalized homophobia, coming out, bisexuality and asexuality are common themes.

Huge fan of @neil-gaiman 's Sandman. Thought the concept of attributing a real life mystery illness barely anyone remembers nowadays to a fictional event was brilliant.

Well, I've been working on my family tree on an off for the last few years, and guess what? I just came across my great aunt's death certificate. She died at one and a half years, and the cause of death was encephalitis lethargica.

To recognize that illness because of the Sandman is so surreal.

Not to mention I had 80's synthwave music playing in the background when I came across it.

I don't know how to feel. Such a weird thing, to learn my great grandmother mourned a child that got taken away from due to an illness I read about in comics and thought of as "cool" in the most detached manner as possible.

I had a coworker call me today and ask me for help on finding the PTO balance for one of his employees. The employee’s last name was Noble and he was trying to remember her first name (this work location tries to only refer to each other by last names for security reasons).

So I, of course, a Whovian, immediately asked: "First name Donna?"

Coworker: "..."

Me: "No, wait. That's a character!"

Coworker: *cackles*

Me: "Shut up!"

Coworker: "But I didn't say nothing!"

Me: "Your judgment did!"

So the federal government hasn't raised the minimum wage, but both local governments and/or private employers are raising those wages.

i thought my laptop was on its last leg because it was running at six billion degrees and using 100% disk space at all times and then i turned off shadows and some other windows effects and it was immediately cured. i just did the same to my roommate's computer and its performance issues were also immediately cured. okay. i guess.

so i guess if you have creaky freezy windows 10/11 try searching "advanced system settings", go to performance settings, and uncheck "show shadows under windows" and anything else you don't want. hope that helps someone else.

Listen, Chuck is a fanfic writer who loves torturing his characters, all the hurt, and the comfort is an illusion. And just like all authors, the characters just ran roughshod over everything and kept trying to take over the narrative.

actually what really fucks me up is that if chuck is the writer and the winchesters are his favorite story, ie. the story that the universes he creates revolve around fulfilling, then castiel's part in the story was to raise dean. just that. chuck says every other version of cas continued to obey, and we know that cas was originally meant to be written out of the show (presumably killed?). so in chuck's version he was no longer relevant to the story.

so castiel as a character was both, meta-narratively and in-universe, created specifically for the purpose of raising dean winchester. he was always created *for* dean. he exists because of dean.

Do you ever think about how Supernatural is the story of how a capricious and cruel author/father/god, who imprisons and then permanently neutralises his feminine equal/sister and orchestrates everything in his little sandbox to watch brothers kill each other, has to burn down the multiverse to suppress the one thing he cannot control: the irrepressible queer love story of Cas and Dean?

I don't know anything about supernatural, but I think the funniest thing Neil Gaiman could do in Good Omens 3 is to let Misha Collins make an appearance as an angel there. Even just for a couple of seconds. It would close a circle that I can't quite explain.
