One of my favorite things about selling handmade items as a small business, is when customers give me the story behind their purchase. With my dog figurines in particular, it's not unusual that it's a memento of a pet that has passed away, and knowing that my art can do something like bring joy and warmth to someone experiencing loss is why I love my work tbh. I feel honored to be part of that, and to be trusted to make something so special. . I decided something when I added these minimalistic dog figurines to my shop -- to highlight misunderstood breeds. Pit bulls, bull terriers, mastiffs, alongside more popular breeds like schnauzer, spaniel, and german shepherd (the bull terrier in particular has become an unexpected best seller). Of course, there is a seemingly endless number of breeds to choose from, and while there are relatively few of them currently available in the shop, custom work is always an option. For the dogs specifically, I have decided that making a special breed or alterations comes at no extra cost, and so the price of such a custom order is the same as the others in the shop 🐶 . The dogs are available in three sizes, painted silver or gold, and they are designed to resemble bronze and iron statues. It's second advent today, which means lighting the second candle and carefully controlling that they burn down evenly, to ensure that coveted staircase effect once the fourth candle is lit. Despite most swedes not being religious, this four-candle setup (though usually with candlesticks) is common in homes and schools and workplaces all over the country. Personally, I find it cozy as hell, and a nice countdown to Christmas🕯️ . As previously mentioned, I have a weakness for creepy-cute things -- always have -- and these cats were designed and made on a whim. Prototypes were completely hand-sewn while watching some anime one late night (the new season of Bleach is 👌👌), and I couldn't resist adding them to the shop. As of tomorrow, there will now also be winged varieties. . These cat plushies (made from a @beezeeart pattern) are available in four colors (brown, gray, black, and white), and two sizes; 15 cm (6 inches) and 23 cm (9 inches). Sometimes I make things unnecessarily complicated for myself, and add a ton of steps and detail to whatever I'm doing or making -- but I love it. I love the challenge of it, and I love all the trial and error that goes into creating something great in the end (even if you often have to settle for just good). . These baubles have a whole mix of materials and parts. Plastic dome, wrapped with jute and satin ribbon, while the inside is made from linen, plastic sprigs, painted polymer clay, and dried cloves and juniper berries (and also more ribbon because of course). It looks the same from both sides, so it can hang and spin around in a window or a tree or wherever 🎄 personally I find these a lot of fun to make, and a lot of time and effort goes into it, not to mention a lot of love. . I have a slight addiction when it comes to wheat warmers -- I use them pretty much daily between October and March. Especially now that it's getting properly cold and we've got less than six hours of daylight where I live (it'll be even less in a month or so). So I decided once to combine my love of wheat warmers with my love of creepy-cute things, and my wheat warmer ragdolls were born 🐰🦊🐻 . They're soft as hell, made from polyester velboa, and the wheat inside is produced right here in Sweden. Rabbits, bears, and foxes, with handmade button eyes and big decorative stitches of yarn, available in white, gray, black, and brown. More animals might pop up in the future as inspiration strikes~~ . These ragdolls were made using a @beezeeart pattern as a base. . 2020 was a weird year, and arguably a weird year to start a business (not that I knew what was coming when I opened my shop in March, before shit hit the fan). One good thing though, was that people bought a lot of gifts when they couldn't see each other for the holidays. Like, a lot. And suddenly, the clay Yule goats I'd listed on a whim, after a late night's burst of inspiration, became quite popular. To say these bad boys are my bestsellers is an understatement 🐐 . The Yule goat -- julbocken -- has always been my favorite when it comes to Swedish Christmas tradition, so making some was a no brainer. And it definitely was, and is, a pleasant surprise to see others appreciate them all over the world. . These goats are available in four sizes (in gold, silver, or black), with the smallest ones light enough to hang from a tree, at 4-7 cm (1.6-2.8 inches) tall. The larger one is a standing ornament at about 13 cm (5 inches), while the chonkiest boi of them all stands at 20 cm (7.9 inches). That one started as a commission, and when more were ordered, I made it a permanent part of my shop. Etsy is raising its transaction fee from 5% to 6.5% for shop owners. 

This is not the only fee Etsy charges shop owners. I don’t know all of them, but I do know that I once sold a pattern for $5.00 and got a whole 81 cents from Etsy in pay. 

I think Etsy is shit. I do NOT think that people who use Etsy to sell are shit. I’m going to be pulling my stuff from Etsy in the next couple of weeks, but I also–and I cannot stress this enough–do not need the audience on Etsy in order to make rent or pay bills. 

My pattern and commission sales have always been a sideline I enjoy. I occasionally toy with going full time with it, but I love my day job and that very much de-motivates me to work another 40 hours a week (at minimum) to turn a fun sideline into a full-time job. 

So, no, I don’t need Etsy. And I can comfortably take my shit off Etsy. But not everyone can, or wants to (because that’s where their audience is), and it’s important to remember that ESPECIALLY if someone raises their prices because Etsy’s gonna cut even more into their bottom line with this increased fee. 

All of that being said, I recommend all Etsy sellers up their prices by 3% at minimum and if anyone tries to be shitty about it, absolutely explain it’s because Etsy is upping the transaction fee. Or tell them to eat shit. Odds are you’re underpricing your work as it is.
